HP Victus 16 (S100) review: Strong 1080p gaming, one major screen flaw

The tested HP Victus 16 S100 is a fast, practical 1080p gaming laptop with one major compromise: its 258-nit, 68% sRGB display is poor for vivid gaming and creative work.

Verdict: The tested HP Victus 16 S100 is a strong 1080p gaming laptop with an RTX 4070, useful battery life for a gaming machine, a comfortable full-size keyboard and a restrained design. Its 16.1-inch 144Hz display is the major problem: Laptop Mag measured only 258 nits, 68% sRGB and 48% DCI-P3. Buy this configuration when the price is right if gaming performance matters most; skip it if the built-in screen must look bright and colorful.

What exactly was reviewed?

“Victus 16 S100” is a family name, not one fixed specification. Laptop Mag’s March 20, 2025 review covered a $1,499 unit with an AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 graphics, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and a 16.1-inch 1920×1080 144Hz panel. HP also lists S100 variants with a Ryzen 5 8645HS and RTX 3050, and with the same Ryzen 5 paired with an RTX 4050 and 1TB storage. The publication listed the family from $1,099 at the time.

Those lower-tier machines will not deliver the RTX 4070 results below, and their panels may differ. Check the exact processor, GPU, brightness, gamut, refresh rate and product number before buying.

Reviewed specification Detail
CPU AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS
GPU Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070
Memory/storage 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
Display 16.1-inch, 1920×1080, 144Hz
Review price $1,499 (March 2025; not a verified August 2026 street price)
Listed starting price $1,099 at publication

Design: understated, but still a 5.2-pound laptop

The steel-gray plastic chassis looks more like a mainstream school or office notebook than an RGB-heavy gaming machine. That restrained styling is practical in classrooms and workplaces, while the 16.1-inch body leaves room for cooling and a number pad.

Laptop Mag measured 14.53 × 10.21 × 0.94 inches and 5.2 pounds, before adding the power adapter. It is relatively thin for a gaming laptop but not genuinely portable. The large footprint and charger are a better fit for a desk, dorm room or occasional commute than daily carry.

Ports and upgradeability

Connectivity includes three USB-A 3.0 ports, one USB-C 3.0 port, HDMI 2.1, Ethernet and a 3.5mm headphone jack. HDMI 2.1 makes an external gaming monitor straightforward; verify the exact S100 product number’s USB-C display-output support before choosing a USB-C monitor or dock.

Laptop Mag says an additional SSD can be installed. Storage layouts can vary, so consult the service documentation for your SKU, such as HP’s S1000-series reference: HP Victus 16 S1000-series specifications. A Tom’s Hardware teardown of another Victus 16 found two SO-DIMM slots and one M.2 NVMe slot, but that finding should not be assumed to apply to every S100 model.

The display is the deal-breaking weakness

The 144Hz refresh rate is appropriate for fast games, but the panel behind it is visibly limited. Laptop Mag measured 258 nits of brightness, 68% sRGB coverage and 48% DCI-P3 coverage. Its table reports 0.24 Delta E for color accuracy, but accuracy does not compensate for the narrow gamut.

  • In games: colorful scenes look duller and less saturated than they should. Dark or deliberately muted games hide the problem better.
  • For creative work: the panel is a poor basis for photo editing, video grading or design because it cannot show a broad range of colors.
  • For bright rooms: 258 nits gives you little headroom against reflections or sunlight.

This is why the RTX 4070 configuration feels oddly balanced: the GPU can drive high settings, ray tracing or an external higher-resolution display, while the built-in screen is the part you see every day. An external, color-accurate monitor makes the laptop much easier to recommend at a desk.

Do not infer that every Victus 16 has this panel. Tom’s Hardware tested a different Intel/RTX 4050 Victus 16 with a factory-rated 300-nit screen and measured 313 nits. That difference reflects configuration and generation variation, not a contradiction. See the separate review at Tom’s Hardware, and verify the retailer’s panel specification for your exact SKU.

Gaming performance: excellent 1080p results from the tested RTX 4070

Laptop Mag’s results show a capable 1080p machine. Settings were not identical in every test, so an “Ultra” result should not be compared directly with a result described only as 1080p.

Game/test Result
Assassin’s Creed Mirage, 1080p Ultra 98 fps
Borderlands 3, 1080p 97 fps
Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 1080p 110 fps
Cyberpunk 2077, 1080p 37 fps
Total War: Warhammer III, 1080p 91 fps
Red Dead Redemption 2, Ultra 1080p 30 fps

In practice, esports, older AAA releases and less demanding games can make good use of the 144Hz panel. Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2 demonstrate that demanding games at maximum settings still require compromises. The RTX 4070 provides useful headroom for higher settings, ray tracing or an external display, but these figures describe only the reviewed Ryzen 7/RTX 4070 machine—not the RTX 3050 or RTX 4050 versions.

Everyday work, keyboard and webcam

The Ryzen 7 8845HS handled browsing, word processing, multitasking and CPU-heavy games without reported lag or crashes in Laptop Mag’s testing. Geekbench 6 scored 11,984, and the SSD reached 1,358 MBps in the review’s transfer test. Sixteen gigabytes of RAM suits mainstream gaming and productivity, while the 512GB drive is usable but can fill quickly with modern game installs. Large virtual machines and professional media projects may need more memory or storage.

The full-size keyboard includes a number pad and has a responsive, clicky feel. Arrow keys are half-size. The power button sits between F12 and Delete, an awkward location that can cause accidental presses.

Laptop Mag liked the 1080p webcam, and the physical privacy shutter is a useful feature. The speakers get loud, but their bass is weak; headphones or external speakers are preferable for games and movies.

Thermals and battery life

Laptop Mag recorded 91°F in general testing and 109°F while gaming. Tom’s Hardware recorded 100.9°F between the G and H keys and 120.7°F at the hottest underside point on a different Victus 16 during a Metro Exodus stress test. These are test-lab observations from different hardware and methods, not guaranteed temperatures for every S100. Use the laptop on a hard, ventilated surface rather than a bed or soft furniture.

  • 16 GB DDR4 RAM, 512 GB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 solid-state drive

Battery endurance is good for this class, but nowhere near an ultrabook:

  • General web-use test: 6 hours 27 minutes.
  • Gaming test: 1 hour 30 minutes.

Serious gaming should be done plugged in for full performance. Tom’s Hardware measured 7 hours 3 minutes in its own web-browsing/video workload on a different Victus 16, illustrating why battery numbers are not interchangeable across configurations or test procedures.

Software and warranty

The reviewed laptop shipped with Windows 11 Home, standard Microsoft applications, HP software and OMEN Gaming Hub. Laptop Mag reports a standard one-year HP warranty, with paid Care Pack extensions available. Coverage and service options depend on country, retailer and exact product number.

Who should buy it?

Buy when these priorities match

  • You find the RTX 4070 configuration substantially below its $1,499 review price.
  • 1080p gaming performance matters more than panel quality.
  • You value a full-size keyboard, number pad and a non-RGB appearance.
  • You can use an external monitor for color-sensitive work.

Choose something else when they do not

  • The built-in screen is central to your 16-inch buying decision.
  • You edit photos or video, need accurate color or work outdoors.
  • You need a genuinely portable laptop.
  • The listing does not clearly identify the CPU, GPU and panel specifications.

How the alternatives fit

Laptop Mag used the Dell G16, Lenovo Legion Pro 5i and Asus TUF Gaming A14 as comparison points. The selection logic is more useful than a generic ranking:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Better display: consider a rival with a wider-gamut, brighter panel if visual quality is your priority.
  • Higher-end experience: a Legion Pro 5i can make sense when sustained performance, cooling or display quality justify a heavier or more expensive machine.
  • Portability: the Asus TUF Gaming A14 targets buyers willing to trade the Victus’s 16-inch screen and RTX 4070 configuration for a smaller system.
  • Value at a lower tier: an RTX 3050 or RTX 4050 Victus may cost less, but do not apply the benchmark results here to those models.

Final verdict

The HP Victus 16 S100 reviewed here puts a Ryzen 7 processor and RTX 4070 into a relatively subdued, practical chassis and delivers strong 1080p gaming, respectable non-gaming battery life and a good full-size keyboard. The display is not a minor specification footnote: 258 nits, 68% sRGB and 48% DCI-P3 make it dim and visibly undersaturated.

That trade-off can be worthwhile when the RTX 4070 model is heavily discounted and you primarily game at a desk, especially with an external monitor available. If the laptop’s own screen must provide vivid games, creative accuracy or comfortable bright-room viewing, the Victus 16 S100 is the wrong configuration to buy.
