“The program can’t start because hp8500at.dll is missing from your computer.” If hp8500at.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the error usually points to an old HP printer-driver package rather than a Microsoft runtime.
Which fix applies to you
Use the symptom that best matches your case:
- The error appeared after Windows corruption, an update, or an interrupted repair: run DISM, then SFC.
- It appeared after installing, removing, or updating an HP printer: remove the old HP package and reinstall the exact printer software.
- It appears when Windows starts but you no longer use the printer: uninstall the obsolete HP software instead of downloading the DLL.
- It appears only in HP printer software: repair or reinstall that HP application and its printer package.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: check Protection history, then reinstall the official package if the file is not restored safely.
- The printer is an Officejet Pro 8500 or another legacy model: confirm the model, Windows version, and x86 or x64 architecture before installing anything.
What hp8500at.dll is
hp8500at.dll is associated with Hewlett-Packard printer software. Evidence connects it to the prnhp005.inf Windows printer-driver package, which supports multiple HP inkjet models, including products in the Officejet Pro 8500 family.

It is not a general-purpose Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime. On Windows 7, the file can appear inside the protected DriverStore or WinSxS component structure. A documented example is:

That path is an example, not a universal location. Windows 10 and Windows 11 may retain a legacy printer package after an upgrade, but the installed package determines the actual path and architecture.

Public file listings disagree about the file’s version, bitness, and metadata. Do not treat a reported 32-bit version or file size as proof that it is correct for your computer. The correct copy must come from the matching HP driver package.
Fix 1: Repair Windows component files
Start here if the problem followed a Windows update, disk problem, interrupted installation, cleanup operation, or unexplained system corruption. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the component source used by SFC.
Run DISM and SFC
- Press Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. Test the action that produced the error, such as opening the HP utility or printing.

If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, continue to the printer-package repair below and review the CBS log rather than copying a replacement DLL from the internet.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make this diagnosis tedious. Fix 2: Remove and reinstall the exact HP printer package
Use this fix when the error began after installing or removing an HP printer, or when the HP software opens but cannot print, scan, or communicate with the device.
Before starting, disconnect the USB cable or turn off the network printer. Note the exact model, such as an Officejet Pro 8500 A909-series or an 8500A A910-series model.

Remove HP software
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for HP.
- Uninstall the HP printer software, driver package, and related printer utilities for the affected device.
- Restart the computer.
On older Windows interfaces, open Control Panel → Programs → Uninstall a program instead.
Remove the printer and stale driver
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Select the old HP printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers and check that the old entry is gone.
For a deeper cleanup:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
printui.exe /s /t2
- Press Enter.
- On the Drivers tab, select the old HP driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that choice.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove a driver that belongs to another working printer. If Windows refuses, disconnect the printer, stop any HP print utility, restart, and try again.
Install the matching package
Use HP’s official support page for the exact printer model. Select the actual Windows release and architecture offered for that device. If HP does not list a compatible Windows 10 or Windows 11 driver, the printer may require a basic Windows driver, a Microsoft Update Catalog package, or replacement hardware.
Run the installer as an administrator:
- Right-click the downloaded HP installer.
- Select Properties.
- If an Unblock checkbox appears on the General tab, select it and choose Apply.
- Open the Compatibility tab only if the HP documentation requires an older Windows compatibility mode.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Choose Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it.
Restart after installation, then print a Windows test page. Open Settings → Printers & scanners → your printer → Printer properties → Print Test Page. If printing works and the original application no longer reports the DLL error, the package is functioning.
Manually hunting through old packages can mean guessing which driver is stale and whether it matches x86 or x64 Windows. Fix 3: Check x86 and x64 compatibility
A filename match is not enough. A 32-bit application may need a 32-bit component, while a 64-bit Windows DriverStore can contain an AMD64 copy of the HP package.
Check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Find System type.
Then check the application that reports the error. If the message appears in an old 32-bit HP utility, install the HP package intended for that printer and Windows release rather than copying a file from a 64-bit folder.

Do not place an x86 DLL in System32 or an x64 DLL in SysWOW64 as an experiment. Those folders have specific Windows architecture roles, and manual replacement can create a second failure.

A security product may have removed or quarantined a driver component, although that is only one possible cause.
In Windows Security:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries near the time the error began.
- Expand an entry to see its path and action.
Restore a file only when its origin, location, and digital signature are trusted. If the entry came from an official HP installation and the package is still valid, reinstalling that package is safer than restoring an isolated DLL. If malware is possible, run a full scan or Microsoft Defender Offline before restoring anything.
Fix 5: Use System Restore when the timing is clear
If hp8500at.dll worked until a recent driver installation, update, or system change, System Restore may return the driver and registry state to an earlier point.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if available.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally leaves personal documents unchanged, but it can remove programs and drivers installed after the selected restore point. If Windows cannot start normally, open Windows Recovery Environment → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore.

Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 hp8500at.dll
unless official documentation for the specific software tells you to do so. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that this HP printer-driver component is a COM server.

A registration error does not repair a missing printer package. Reinstall the driver instead.

Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, a mismatched version, or a file that does not include the dependencies the application actually needs. A “specified module could not be found” message can also mean that a dependency is missing even when the named DLL exists.
Use the official HP driver page, Windows Update, or the Microsoft Update Catalog for the exact printer and Windows version. If the file is present in a verified official package but the driver store is damaged, repair the package through Windows and HP’s installer rather than copying the file by hand.
If the printer is obsolete
If you no longer use the HP printer, remove its software and stale driver completely. A missing file in an unused legacy package does not need to be restored if no active program depends on it.
If you still need the printer but HP provides no compatible driver for Windows 10 or Windows 11, check whether Windows offers a built-in class driver or whether the Microsoft Update Catalog lists a matching package. Do not install a vaguely similar HP driver solely because its name contains “8500.”

Does it belong exclusively to the Officejet Pro 8500?
No. The package evidence covers multiple HP printer models. The Officejet Pro 8500 family is a prominent association, but the filename is not proven to belong exclusively to that model.

A legacy HP package can remain after a Windows upgrade. The error may also come from an old HP utility that is still installed even though the printer driver itself is incomplete.
SFC found a problem but could not repair hp8500at.dll. What next?
Restart, run DISM again, and retry SFC. Then remove the damaged HP printer package and install the exact official package. If Windows remains unstable, use System Restore or Windows Recovery Environment.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
