The error may read: “The program can’t start because hpc5500t.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
hpc5500t.dll is most likely a legacy Hewlett-Packard printer-driver component, not a normal Windows or Microsoft Visual C++ file. Windows may report that it is missing, cannot be loaded, or is “not designed to run on Windows” when an HP printer queue, driver, spooler operation, or older HP utility tries to use it.
Which fix applies to you
- The error appears when printing, opening printer properties, or starting the Print Spooler: remove the affected HP printer and reinstall its driver.
- You recently replaced a printer or upgraded Windows: remove the obsolete printer queue and its old driver package, then install a current driver.
- Printing works, but an old HP utility shows the error: uninstall or repair that utility instead of copying the DLL.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection History, then reinstall the HP package from an official HP support page.
- Several printers or Windows printing functions are failing: update Windows and repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- The printer is shared from another computer or server: repair the driver on the host or print server, not only on your PC.
- You found a replacement DLL online: do not copy it into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or the Windows directory.
The exact HP printer model associated with hpc5500t.dll is not publicly verified. Identify the printer and driver installed on your computer before choosing a replacement.
What hpc5500t.dll does
Public file metadata describes hpc5500t.dll as HP Print Processor, associated with HP UI, and attributes it to Hewlett-Packard Corporation. A commonly indexed legacy copy is reported as a 32-bit file, version 0.3.7033.0, with a size of approximately 1.35 MB. Those details come from secondary file indexes, not a current HP package manifest, so they do not identify a confirmed printer model or current HP installer.

A print processor is a user-mode DLL used by the Windows printing system. Microsoft explains that the print spooler calls print processors as part of processing print jobs for a printer driver. hpc5500t.dll is therefore best treated as part of an HP printer-driver installation.
It is not verified as:
- A Windows inbox system component
- A Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX file
- A .NET component
- A general-purpose application DLL
Microsoft lists Localspl.dll and Sfmpsprt.dll as standard Windows print processors. hpc5500t.dll is not one of those built-in processors, which supports the conclusion that it came from third-party HP printer software.
The error can occur because the file itself is missing, but “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the file cannot be loaded.
Fix 1: Identify the HP printer and driver
Start by finding which printer installation is calling the file.

- Select Bluetooth & devices on Windows 11, or Devices on Windows 10.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Review installed HP printers and note their exact model names.
- Select an HP printer and open Printer properties.
- Select the Advanced tab and note the driver name.
- If several HP printers are installed, repeat these steps for each one.
Also check older entries:
- In Printers & scanners, look for duplicate, offline, or disconnected HP queues.
- Remove queues belonging to printers you no longer use.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select View devices and printers.
- Check whether an older HP printer or HP fax entry remains there.
If the error appears when launching a named HP application, record that application too. An older HP utility may be loading the printer component directly even when the Windows print queue still works.
Do not assume the file belongs to the newest HP printer listed. Legacy driver packages can remain installed after a printer has been replaced.

Fix 2: Remove and reinstall the HP printer
This is the most likely repair for a missing or damaged hpc5500t.dll.
Remove the printer
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected HP printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners, select the printer, choose Remove device, and confirm.

Removing a queue does not always remove its driver.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Find the old HP driver associated with the removed printer.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that option.
- Confirm and restart the computer.
Only remove a driver after checking that no working printer still depends on it. If the HP driver cannot be removed because it is in use, restart the Print Spooler service and try again:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Retry the driver removal.
Install the correct driver
Download the driver from the official HP Software and Driver Downloads page for the exact printer model. If HP does not provide a suitable current package, use Windows:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches.
- Select the printer when it appears.
- Follow the prompts to complete installation.
For supported business printers, HP’s Universal Print Driver may be appropriate. For newer devices, Windows may use an IPP class driver or HP’s current print application instead of the old component. Do not force an old package simply because it once contained hpc5500t.dll.

The repair worked if the printer installs without a missing-DLL message, printer properties open normally, and a test page prints.
Fix 3: Update or replace an old driver
An old driver can remain after a Windows upgrade, printer replacement, or failed HP installation.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Remove the affected printer.
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting it.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click an entry clearly belonging to the removed HP printer.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove the driver, select that option only for the obsolete HP device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current model-specific HP driver or add the printer through Windows.
Do not use Device Manager to randomly replace unrelated printing devices. The important item is the driver shown in the printer’s Printer properties > Advanced tab.

Antivirus software may quarantine a damaged, modified, or suspicious printer component.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
hpc5500t.dll, an HP driver, or the affected printer package. - Expand the entry and review its location and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The file was installed by a verified HP package.
- The location belongs to the printer-driver installation.
- You are confident the detection is false.
- You will reinstall or repair the HP package immediately afterward.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. If the location is an unexpected application folder or the file came from a DLL download site, do not restore it. Remove the untrusted package and run a full Windows Security scan.
Fix 5: Run Windows Update
Windows updates can provide printer compatibility fixes, driver updates, and servicing components.

- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Review available driver updates.
- Install a printer-related update only if it matches your hardware.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting, reinstall or add the HP printer again. Windows Update will not necessarily restore a third-party HP print processor, so this step supports the driver repair rather than replacing it.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when other Windows printing components also fail, Windows files appear damaged, or the problem began after a system interruption. They do not guarantee that a third-party HP DLL will be reinstalled.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin), Windows PowerShell (Admin), or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test the printer. If it reports that it could not repair everything, repeat the printer-driver removal and installation steps rather than repeatedly copying DLL files.

The commonly indexed copy of hpc5500t.dll is 32-bit, but other pages make conflicting architecture claims. Do not resolve that conflict by downloading a different copy.
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit printer components are normally handled by the printer-driver and spooler infrastructure. They do not belong automatically in System32, and copying a 32-bit DLL into SysWOW64 is not a valid repair.

- A damaged HP file
- An incompatible legacy driver
- A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
- A missing dependency
- A corrupted installation
Select the driver for the exact printer model and Windows version. Let the HP installer or Windows place its files. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because the filename ends in .dll; no authoritative evidence links hpc5500t.dll specifically to those runtimes.
Do not run:
regsvr32 hpc5500t.dll
Print processors are installed as part of a printer-driver package. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the appropriate self-registration entry point, such as DllRegisterServer. A print processor normally is not repaired by manually registering it.
Fix 8: Handle shared printers and old HP utilities
If the printer is shared from another Windows computer or a print server, the defective driver may be supplied by that host.
- Identify the computer or server sharing the printer.
- Remove the printer from the client computer.
- On the host, update or remove the affected HP driver.
- Install the correct current driver on the host.
- Add the shared printer again on the client.
If only an old HP utility fails while printing works:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for HP software associated with the printer.
- Select the obsolete utility.
- Choose Uninstall or Modify.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall only the current HP software required for the printer.
If the error remains
Use System Restore if the failure began after a recent driver, software, or update change:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Confirm the restore if the point is appropriate.
If that does not help, open Event Viewer and inspect errors under Windows Logs > System around the time the printer fails. Record the printer model, driver name, Windows edition and build, and exact error text before contacting HP support.
Prevention
- Keep the printer driver tied to the exact HP model.
- Remove obsolete queues after replacing a printer.
- Prefer current HP packages or Windows-provided IPP and class drivers.
- Do not restore unknown quarantined DLLs.
- Do not copy standalone DLLs into Windows folders.
- Keep Windows updated.
- Avoid installing multiple legacy HP utility suites for the same printer.
The safest resolution is to identify the affected HP queue, remove its old driver package, and reinstall the current driver from HP or Windows. hpc5500t.dll is an obscure legacy component, and the exact printer package that originally supplied it cannot be verified from public official documentation.
