hpcdmc71.dll Load Error: Rebuild the HP Printer Driver

hpcdmc71.dll is an HP printer-driver component, not a general Windows runtime. If hpcdmc71.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, check these points before changing files:

  • Which HP printer is installed or was previously installed?
  • Does the message appear when printing, during sign-in, at startup, or after opening an old HP utility?
  • Did the problem begin after a Windows upgrade, printer removal, driver cleanup, antivirus quarantine, or failed installation?
  • Is the installed Windows edition 32-bit or 64-bit?
  • Does the file exist inside a Windows Driver Store folder, or is it sitting in an unexpected user-writable folder?

The safest repair is to remove the affected HP printer and reinstall its complete driver through Windows Update or HP’s driver page for the exact printer model. Do not download hpcdmc71.dll by itself.

What hpcdmc71.dll belongs to

The file’s embedded description is DMC Component. Its product information identifies DMC, and HP is listed as the publisher. In practice, public driver-store references associate it with older HP printer packages, including packages using INF names such as prnhp003.inf and prnhp005.inf.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes this a narrow, legacy printer-driver problem. It is not:

#1 Best Overall
  • A standard Microsoft Windows DLL
  • A Visual C++ redistributable
  • A DirectX component
  • A .NET runtime file
  • A general-purpose application dependency
  • A file that should normally be copied into C:WindowsSystem32

Known copies may be stored below a path resembling:

C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository...amd64

The exact folder name depends on the printer package and Windows installation. Driver Store placement does not make the file a Windows system component. It means Windows is storing a third-party driver package.

Public records identify version 1.0.2.36, but published records disagree about file size and architecture. One record describes an AMD64 copy, while another lists a 32-bit copy. Treat the installed file’s Properties → Details tab as authoritative rather than trusting a generic DLL index.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the error messages mean

You may see wording such as:

  • “The program can’t start because hpcdmc71.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “Error loading hpcdmc71.dll.”
  • “The specified module could not be found.”
  • “hpcdmc71.dll is corrupt.”

These messages are recurring reports associated with the file, not necessarily official Microsoft wording.

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file itself is absent. The file may exist while another dependency, driver component, or registration element is missing. That is why copying a replacement DLL often changes nothing. The complete HP printer package must be repaired.

If the message appears at startup and no HP printer is currently installed, an old HP utility, startup entry, scheduled task, or orphaned printer reference may still be calling the component.

Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the HP printer

This is the most likely fix and should be attempted before system repair commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove the printer

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Select Printers & scanners.
  4. Select the HP printer associated with the error.
  5. Choose Remove.
  6. Confirm the removal.
  7. Restart Windows.

If several HP printers are listed, do not remove all of them automatically. Identify the printer that was installed when the error began. Multiple HP driver packages can coexist, and removing the wrong one may interrupt another printer.

Add the printer again

  1. Return to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
  2. Select Add device.
  3. Wait while Windows searches for printers.
  4. Select the HP printer when it appears.
  5. Follow the setup prompts.
  6. Print a test page from the printer’s settings page.

Windows may obtain a compatible driver through Windows Update. Microsoft’s guidance is to use Windows Update or the printer manufacturer’s current driver package rather than a standalone DLL.

  • KEY FEATURES – Color print, copy and scan, plus auto 2-sided printing and a 100-sheet input tray
  • HP'S MOST INTUITIVE COLOR TOUCHSCREEN – Smoothly navigate your printer with the easy-to-use 2.4" touchscreen
  • WIRELESS PRINTING – Stay connected with our most reliable dual-band Wi-Fi, which automatically detects and resolves connection issues

A successful repair usually has three signs:

  • The printer installs without a missing-DLL message.
  • The printer appears as available in Printers & scanners.
  • A test page prints successfully.

If Windows cannot find the printer, connect it to the network or computer first, confirm that it is powered on, and select Add device again. For an older model, continue with the model-specific HP package described below.

Fix 2: Install the exact HP driver package

A generic driver may restore basic printing but fail to restore older HP scanning, status, or configuration components. Use the exact printer model, operating system architecture, and connection type when selecting the package from HP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find the printer’s full model name on its front panel, label, or existing Windows entry.
  2. Open HP’s official printer driver support page in a browser.
  3. Search for the exact model.
  4. Select the installed Windows version when HP asks for it.
  5. Review the available driver and software packages.
  6. Download the package intended for that model.
  7. Run the installer as an administrator.
  8. Connect the printer when the installer requests it.
  9. Restart Windows after installation.
  10. Print a test page.

Do not select a package merely because its name contains “HP printer.” Model families can use different INF files and different supporting components.

If the installer reports that the printer already exists, cancel it, remove the printer from Printers & scanners, restart Windows, and run the installer again. If the model is no longer listed, Windows’ built-in driver or the last HP-supported package may be the only practical choice. Do not force a random package from a similar model.

When updating or reinstalling drivers manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale driver entries and show what needs attention, which avoids hunting through many driver versions; its repair and driver installation features require the full version, and reinstalling the exact HP printer package remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 3: Remove an orphaned HP driver package

If Windows repeatedly reinstalls a damaged package, the old driver may remain in the driver store even after the printer is removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check installed third-party drivers

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
pnputil /enum-drivers
  1. Review the output for HP printer packages.
  2. Note the Published Name, usually in the form oem##.inf.
  3. Confirm that the package belongs to the affected HP printer before removing anything.

Do not remove a package merely because it contains “HP” in its name. A different HP printer may depend on it.

Remove the confirmed package

After identifying the correct published name, run:

pnputil /delete-driver oem##.inf /uninstall

Replace oem##.inf with the actual published name.

Restart Windows, then reinstall the printer using Windows Update or the exact HP model package.

If PnPUtil reports that the package is in use, remove the printer first, close printer software, restart Windows, and try again. If the package still cannot be removed, use Device Manager.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Printers, Print queues, and, where present, Universal Serial Bus controllers or Software devices.
  4. Right-click the affected HP device.
  5. Select Uninstall device.
  6. If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
  7. Confirm the removal.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Reinstall the printer.

Device Manager is useful for removing a device association, but it does not always remove every copy of a driver package. That is why PnPUtil and Print Server Properties may be necessary for persistent cases.

Check Print Server Properties

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter:
printui /s /t2
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select the Drivers tab.
  3. Highlight the confirmed obsolete HP driver.
  4. Select Remove.
  5. Choose Remove driver and driver package when that option is available.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Reinstall the printer.

Do not remove a driver shared by another working HP printer unless you are prepared to reinstall that printer too.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate printer component, or a failed installation can leave the package incomplete.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving hpcdmc71.dll, HP printer software, or the relevant installer.
  5. Review the file path and detection details.

Do not restore the file simply because its name is familiar. A malicious file can use the same filename.

The safer response is usually to reinstall the complete HP package from Windows Update or HP. Consider restoring a quarantined file only when:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The file came from the confirmed HP installation package.
  • Its location matches the printer driver’s expected package path.
  • Its digital signature is valid.
  • The detection has been reviewed and is clearly a false positive.

If the file was found in a temporary folder, a download directory, or an unexpected user-writable location, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

SFC and DISM are not the primary repair for this file because hpcdmc71.dll is supplied by an HP printer package, not normally by Windows. They are appropriate when Windows itself is damaged, printer installation fails broadly, or other protected system files are also reporting errors.

Run DISM

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Restart Windows if requested.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated terminal again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files appear intact.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the printer.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: repeat the printer-driver repair and investigate Windows servicing problems.
  • Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: restart into normal Windows and run the command again from an elevated terminal.

These commands may repair Windows-managed components, but they will not necessarily recreate a missing third-party HP driver package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When repeated manual DISM and SFC runs leave you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show what needs attention; the repair features require the full version, and reinstalling the HP printer software remains the definitive fix when the missing component belongs to that package.

Fix 6: Check architecture and file details

Do not use a generic “32-bit DLL” label as proof that the file belongs in a particular folder. Public records for hpcdmc71.dll conflict about architecture and size, while the installed driver package determines the correct copy and location.

To inspect an existing file:

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab.
  4. Check the description, product name, company, and file version.
  5. Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
  6. Review the signer and signature status.

Also check Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Review System type.

An x64 installation may contain an AMD64 printer-driver copy. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows does not justify placing a random 32-bit DLL in System32. The HP installer selects the correct location and package files.

Do not register this DLL with Regsvr32

Do not routinely run:

regsvr32 hpcdmc71.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command, and there is no verified evidence that this HP printer component should be manually registered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A failed regsvr32 command can produce another error without fixing the printer package. Reinstall the complete driver instead.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Do not download the DLL separately

A standalone DLL download is the wrong repair source. It can provide:

  • Malware under a familiar filename
  • The wrong HP package version
  • The wrong architecture
  • A file missing its catalog and INF information
  • A copy with missing dependencies
  • A file that does not match the installed printer software

Even a clean replacement may not work because the original failure can involve a missing dependency or damaged driver registration.

The safe sources are Windows Update and the official HP driver page for the exact printer model. Install the complete signed package, not a loose DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the message appears without an installed printer

When no printer is listed, the error may come from leftover HP software.

Check these locations:

  • Settings → Apps → Installed apps for old HP printer utilities
  • Task Manager → Startup apps for obsolete HP entries
  • Task Scheduler for tasks clearly associated with old HP software
  • Control Panel → Programs and Features for legacy HP packages

Remove only software you recognize as belonging to the obsolete printer. Restart Windows and check whether the message returns. If another HP printer is still in use, do not remove shared software until you have confirmed that the current printer has its own working package.

System Restore is a fallback when the failure clearly began after a driver or Windows change and normal removal and reinstallation fail:

FAQ

Is hpcdmc71.dll a Windows file?

No. It is an HP DMC component associated with legacy HP printer-driver packages. Windows may store it in Driver Store, but that does not make it a built-in Windows runtime.

Which HP printer owns the file?

No single model can be assigned reliably from the filename alone. Public evidence associates it with multiple legacy HP packages, including packages using INF names such as prnhp003.inf and prnhp005.inf. Identify the installed printer and its driver package instead of guessing from the DLL name.

Should I copy the file into System32?

No. The driver installer determines the correct architecture, location, dependencies, catalog, and registration data.

Will SFC restore hpcdmc71.dll?

Not necessarily. SFC repairs protected Windows files. This DLL normally comes from an HP printer package, so reinstalling that package is the appropriate repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the error say a module is missing when the file exists?

A dependency may be missing, the package may be incomplete, or an old printer reference may be calling the wrong component. Reinstall the complete driver rather than replacing only the named file.

Does regsvr32 fix this error?

No routine regsvr32 repair is established for this component. Use the HP printer installer instead.

Can antivirus quarantine cause the problem?

Yes. Check Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history, but prefer reinstalling the verified HP package over restoring an isolated DLL.

What if my old HP printer has no current driver?

Try Windows’ built-in printer driver first, then check HP’s support page for the last package available for the exact model and Windows version. If neither supports the printer, the legacy device may not have a compatible package for the current installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The repair path is therefore straightforward: identify the HP printer, remove the damaged association, reinstall the complete model-specific driver, and use Windows repair commands only when broader system corruption is also present.
