Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, note:
- Which program or operation triggers the error: printing, installing an HP printer, opening a document, or starting another application.
- When the problem began: after removing a printer, updating Windows, installing a driver, or a security scan.
- The full message: for example, “hpcfltw8.dll is missing,” “The specified module could not be found,” or “The code execution cannot proceed.”
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit: press Windows key + I, select System, then About, and check System type.
- Where the file is located, if it exists: do not trust a copy found in an unexpected application or game folder.
hpcfltw8.dll is identified as HP XPS Filter, part of the Hewlett-Packard XPS Pipeline Filter used by an HP XPS printer driver. It is not a general Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime. The safest repair is to identify the HP printer driver that needs it and reinstall that complete package rather than downloading the DLL by itself.
What hpcfltw8.dll does
HP XPS printer drivers use a print-filter pipeline to process XPS print jobs. Microsoft describes XPSDrv drivers as printer drivers that use rendering filters and a filter pipeline. Windows loads these filters through its printing infrastructure, including the print-filter pipeline service, rather than normally treating them as ordinary application COM libraries.

That distinction explains why common DLL advice often fails:
- Registering the file with
regsvr32is generally inappropriate. - Copying it into
System32or an application directory can create an architecture mismatch. - A missing dependency can produce the same “specified module could not be found” message even when
hpcfltw8.dllis present. - The correct file must be installed as part of the printer driver’s INF package.
The file may appear inside the Windows Driver Store, commonly below:
#1 Best Overall
- UPC: 198828789662
- Weight: 10.450 lbs
%windir%System32DriverStoreFileRepository
The exact subfolder varies according to the printer package, Windows build, architecture, and installation history. Do not manually browse for a similarly named file and copy it elsewhere.
Public file inventories have reported historical 32-bit entries with different versions and sizes, and public path evidence shows an amd64 occurrence in an HP printer package. These records are identification clues, not current official release guidance. They do not tell you which HP printer model is installed or which build belongs on your computer.
What the error messages mean
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because hpcfltw8.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting hpcfltw8.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading hpcfltw8.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because hpcfltw8.dll was not found.”
- “hpcfltw8.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
A message naming a program does not necessarily mean that program owns the file. A print spooler operation, printer setup component, document application, or stale printer connection may be the process that exposes the missing driver component.
Also, “specified module could not be found” can mean either:
hpcfltw8.dllitself is absent, or- the DLL is present but one of its required dependencies cannot load.
Use the repair order below so the complete driver package and its dependencies are restored together.
Fix 1: Identify the printer and reinstall its official HP package
This is the most likely and safest fix.
Find the printer connected to the error
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- In Windows 11, select Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners.
- In Windows 10, select Devices, then Printers & scanners.
- Review the installed printers and note every HP model.
- Select an HP printer and open Printer properties or Manage.
- Check the driver name under the Advanced tab in Printer properties, where available.
If you have several HP printers, do not remove drivers at random. The filename alone cannot identify the exact printer model.
Download the correct package
Use HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page for printers. Search for the exact printer model, select the Windows version and processor architecture, and choose the available full-feature, basic, or updated driver package appropriate for that device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Prefer the package intended for your exact model and Windows installation. Do not use a loose hpcfltw8.dll download as a substitute for the installer.
Remove the printer before reinstalling
- Return to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Choose Remove or Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the HP installer you downloaded.
- Follow its connection instructions. Connect the USB cable only when the installer requests it, or select the correct network printer.
- Restart again if the installer requests it.
- Print a Windows test page.
To print a test page, open the printer’s Manage screen, choose Printer properties, select the General tab, and click Print Test Page.
A successful repair normally means the installation completes without the DLL message, the printer appears in Settings, and the test page prints. If the installer still reports the missing file, continue with the quarantine and driver cleanup checks below.

Reinstalling the exact HP package remains the definitive fix for this printer-specific file.

Fix 2: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Antivirus software may remove or isolate a driver component. Do not assume that means the detection was incorrect.
- Open the Start menu and search for Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections for an HP printer package or a path containing
hpcfltw8.dll. - Expand the detection and inspect the original path, detection name, and package details.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The driver came from HP’s official installer or a trusted Windows-delivered package.
- The package has a valid digital signature.
- The detection is confirmed to be a false positive.
- You will immediately reinstall or repair the complete package.
If the file appeared in a game folder, temporary directory, or unrelated application folder, do not restore it merely because its name matches. Run a Microsoft Defender full scan, and consider an offline scan if the file keeps returning or Windows reports tampering.
Even after a confirmed false positive, reinstalling the complete HP driver is safer than preserving an isolated DLL.
Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this step when:
- More than one Windows or printer component is failing.
- Windows Update or a driver installation reports damaged system files.
- The HP installer fails because Windows cannot service the driver.
- The driver package appears correct but Windows cannot load its dependencies.
These commands may not restore hpcfltw8.dll if it belongs only to an HP package. They repair Windows component storage and protected system files, not every third-party driver file.
Run DISM first
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Read the final message.
If DISM reports that the operation completed successfully, continue with SFC.
Run System File Checker
In the same administrator window, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
Restart Windows after both commands. Then run the HP driver installer again or repeat the action that caused the error.

Running these commands manually gives you control but provides little guidance about which change fixed the problem. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows issues and show what needs repair; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the exact HP printer package.
Fix 4: Remove a stale HP driver package correctly
A removed printer can leave a print queue or driver reference behind. A failed upgrade can also leave Windows pointing to a package that is incomplete.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:

- Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Look for the HP driver associated with the removed or malfunctioning printer.
- Select it and click Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that option.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current model-specific HP package.
Do not remove an HP driver that another working printer still uses. If Windows says the driver is in use, remove its associated printer queues first and restart the Print Spooler service or reboot before trying again.
Inspect packages with PnPUtil
For a more detailed inventory, open Terminal (Admin) and run:
pnputil /enum-drivers /files
Review the published names and provider information carefully. Do not delete a package just because its name is unfamiliar or because it contains an old-looking version.
If you have positively identified the affected package, Microsoft’s removal syntax is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
pnputil /delete-driver oem#.inf /uninstall
Replace oem#.inf with the exact published name shown on your computer. Do not delete files directly from FileRepository. The Driver Store uses package relationships and signing information that manual deletion can damage.
After removing the confirmed stale package, restart Windows and install the official HP driver again.
Fix 5: Restart the print services
A driver can be installed correctly while the print pipeline still has an old module loaded.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
- If Restart is unavailable, choose Stop, wait a few seconds, then choose Start.
- Retry the print job or HP installation.
If the error returns immediately, note which printer or operation triggered it. That information helps identify the package still requesting the filter.

To check the system type:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
Then download the HP package matching:
- Your Windows version.
- Your Windows processor architecture.
- Your exact printer model.
Do not copy a file from SysWOW64 to System32, from System32 to SysWOW64, or from another computer. Those folders have specific architectural roles, and copying a similarly named DLL can leave the printer package inconsistent.
If the printer is old and HP no longer provides a compatible package, use a suitable Microsoft inbox or class driver when Windows offers one. Do not force an unverified filter into a newer package.
Fix 7: Determine whether a dependency is missing
If hpcfltw8.dll exists in the correct Driver Store package but the error continues, the missing item may be a dependency or the wrong package may be loading.
Check these details:
- Note the full path shown in the error or installer log.
- Compare it with the HP driver package installed for the printer.
- Open Event Viewer by searching for it from Start.
- Check Windows Logs → Application and Windows Logs → System for events at the time of the failure.
- Look for the calling process, printer name, driver name, or another missing module.
- Retry after removing the stale package and reinstalling the correct HP package.
Do not attempt to solve an unknown dependency by downloading several DLLs. That can create a chain of incompatible files and makes the original cause harder to diagnose.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose registration functions, commonly COM or ActiveX components. An XPS print filter is normally loaded by the Windows print pipeline according to the printer driver’s package and INF configuration.
Running:
regsvr32 hpcfltw8.dll
is therefore generally not a valid repair. It may produce an entry-point error, appear to succeed without fixing printing, or encourage you to place the DLL in the wrong folder.
Install the complete signed driver package instead.

Downloading hpcfltw8.dll from a random DLL repository is risky and often ineffective because:
- The file may contain malware or tampered code.
- Its architecture may not match Windows or the printer package.
- Its version may be incompatible with the installed filter pipeline.
- A required dependency may still be missing.
- The INF package, catalog signature, and related files remain absent.
- Copying it into a system folder can break servicing and future driver updates.
Use HP’s official printer support and driver workflow, or a driver supplied through Windows for a compatible device. Microsoft’s Driver Store documentation explains why printer drivers should be installed and removed as packages rather than copied file by file.
If the error began after an update
If the timing clearly points to a Windows or printer-driver update:

- If the problem remains and the timeline is clear, open System Restore by searching for Create a restore point.
- Select System Restore, choose a restore point from before the failure, and review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore changes system files, drivers, and settings but normally leaves personal files untouched. It is a fallback for a confirmed regression, not the first response to an incomplete HP installation.
If only one Windows account is affected
A per-user printer connection or damaged profile can make the problem appear system-wide when it is not.
- Open Settings → Accounts → Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Create a temporary local test account.
- Sign out and sign in to that account.
- Add the HP printer and test printing.
If the printer works in the new profile, the driver may be healthy and the original profile may contain a stale printer connection or corrupted configuration. Remove and reconnect the printer in the original account, or migrate to the clean profile after backing up personal data.
When to contact HP or Microsoft
Escalate the issue when:
- The exact HP package fails on multiple clean installation attempts.
- Windows reports a signature or catalog error.
- The printer is obsolete and no compatible package is available.
hpcfltw8.dllappears outside a printer-driver location.- Defender repeatedly detects the file.
- Multiple Windows components fail after DISM and SFC.
- The error identifies a dependency that the HP installer cannot restore.
Before contacting support, record the printer model, Windows version, system architecture, full error text, driver name from Print Server Properties, and the file path involved. Do not send a copied DLL as the proposed solution.
FAQ
Is hpcfltw8.dll a Windows system DLL?
It may be present in the Windows Driver Store or in a Windows-delivered printer package, but it is not a general-purpose Windows application runtime. Its identity is HP XPS Filter, associated with an HP XPS printer-driver pipeline.
Can the filename identify my HP printer?
No. Multiple HP printer packages can use related filter components. Identify the printer through Settings → Printers & scanners, the driver list, and the package installed on the computer.
Is this related to Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no reliable evidence tying this file to those runtimes. Installing them is not the normal repair. Repair the HP printer driver first.
Should I copy the DLL into System32?
No. The correct architecture, dependencies, INF configuration, and signature belong to the complete driver package. Copying one file can conceal the actual problem.
Will SFC restore hpcfltw8.dll?
Not necessarily. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. If this filter belongs to an HP printer package, reinstalling that package is more likely to restore it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What if the file is present but Windows still says it is missing?
The message may refer to a missing dependency, incompatible architecture, stale driver reference, or invalid package path. Check the calling process and reinstall the complete matching driver.
Do I need to enable a Windows Feature?
Usually not. hpcfltw8.dll is a printer-driver component, not a Windows optional feature that should be enabled separately.
What is the correct fix in most cases?
Remove the affected HP printer and its confirmed stale driver package, restart Windows, and install the exact current HP package for the printer and Windows architecture. Use DISM and SFC when broader Windows component corruption is also indicated.
