The exact printer cannot be identified from the filename alone. The file is associated with HP Universal Print Driver packages, especially older PCL 5 and PCL 6 packages, and has also been reported during HP LaserJet 600 M602 installation.

This file is not normally part of Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game. If the message appears while installing a printer, printing, opening Printing Preferences, or starting Windows after an HP printer was removed, treat it as an HP driver problem first.

Before repairing it, identify the failing HP component
The timing of the error helps determine which installation is damaged.
- During printer installation: the HP package is incomplete, incompatible, or missing companion files.
- When printing or opening Printing Preferences: the printer queue or its driver is damaged.
- At Windows startup after removing a printer: an old HP utility, queue, or startup component remains.
- After a driver update: the new package may not match the printer, driver language, or Windows architecture.
- After disk cleanup or antivirus activity: the DLL may have been removed or quarantined.
- After moving to a newer Windows version: an older PCL, USB, or DOT4 driver may no longer be suitable.
Also check whether the affected driver is PCL 5, PCL 6, PostScript, or model-specific. Do not assume that replacing a PCL 5 package with a PCL 6 or PostScript package is interchangeable.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete HP printer package
This is the most likely solution. Do not replace only the DLL.

- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected HP printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
If the printer is not listed, continue with the driver removal steps below.
Remove the old driver
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Highlight the HP driver associated with the removed printer.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that option.
- Restart the computer again.
Do not manually delete files from C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the Driver Store. Those folders can contain shared components, and manual deletion can leave Windows with a partially removed driver.
Install the correct HP package
- Open the official HP Support site.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Open the printer’s Software and Drivers page.
- Select your Windows version and system architecture.
- Download the complete HP driver package, not an individual DLL.
- If HP offers several driver families, choose the one matching the existing workflow: PCL 5, PCL 6, PostScript, or the model-specific package.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Reconnect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Print a Windows test page and open Printing Preferences.
The repair worked if the HP queue installs without the DLL message, Printing Preferences opens, and a test page prints. If the newest package does not contain hpcui155.dll, that is not automatically a problem. A current package may use a different, compatible UI component.

For this HP-specific problem, however, reinstalling the complete package from HP remains the definitive repair.
Fix 2: Match the driver architecture and printer language
A 32-bit DLL is not automatically wrong on 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit printer application or driver can legitimately require a 32-bit component.
Check these items before installing another package:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System, then About.
- Look at System type.
- Record whether Windows is 64-bit, 32-bit, or ARM64.
- Return to the HP driver page and select the matching package.
Then identify the driver family:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Open Printer properties.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- Read the driver name.
If the old installation used PCL 5, do not substitute a PCL 6 package without checking the printer’s documentation and application requirements. Older printers may need a legacy or model-specific package. HP’s release notes state that UPD 6.1.0 was the final UPD release supporting PCL 5 on Windows 7 and newer. They also identify a later cutoff for USB DOT4 printer support, so a new universal package may not support an older connection method.
If the printer is old, try the exact model-specific HP package before trying a newer universal package. If the printer is shared from another computer or print server, match the server’s driver architecture and language as well.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove a driver component after installation.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry naming
hpcui155.dllor the HP installer. - Do not restore the file merely because its name looks familiar.
- Verify that it came from a downloaded HP installer and that the installer is still available from HP.
- If the detection is clearly a false positive, follow your security product’s restore and allow-list process.
- Reinstall the complete HP driver package afterward.
- Run a full malware scan.
If antivirus continues to quarantine the file, leave it quarantined and contact the security vendor or HP rather than downloading a replacement DLL. A legitimate file can still be paired with a damaged or compromised installer.

Fix 4: Remove a stale queue or HP startup component
If the error appears at every startup even though the printer was removed, Windows may still be launching an old HP utility.
First check the startup list:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old HP printer utility.
- If you recognize the entry and no longer use it, right-click it and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Then check for remaining printers:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Remove unused HP queues.
- Use
printui.exe /s /t2to remove their associated drivers where appropriate. - Restart Windows.
If the error remains, open Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs, then Application.
- Check an error recorded at the same time as the DLL message.
- Note the executable path or application name requesting
hpcui155.dll.
That path tells you whether the request comes from the active print queue, an old HP utility, or another leftover program. Do not assume that the visible printer name is the component making the request.

A missing HP DLL is not normally repaired by Windows component servicing. Use DISM and System File Checker when several Windows components are malfunctioning, system files are damaged, or Windows Update is also failing.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the HP driver installation.
DISM repairs the Windows image, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command normally recreates a missing third-party HP driver component.

Fix 6: Use Windows’ basic printer driver as a diagnostic
Windows Update may provide an in-box driver that lets the printer work without HP-specific features.

- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- If the printer is not found, select Add manually.
- Choose the connection method.
- Select a compatible Microsoft or generic printer driver if offered.
- Complete the installation.
- Print a test page.
If the generic driver works, the printer hardware and connection are probably functional. The remaining problem is likely limited to the HP package or its additional UI features. The generic driver may not provide scanning, status monitoring, duplex controls, or other HP-specific options.

What not to do
Do not download hpcui155.dll by itself
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an unsigned file, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the rest of the HP package. Even a clean copy may not fix the missing companion files, registry entries, printer queue, or driver configuration.
Use the official HP printer support page or HP Universal Print Driver page instead. Install the complete package for the exact model and Windows architecture.
Do not copy it into System32
Placing a third-party DLL in System32, SysWOW64, the printer application folder, or another arbitrary directory is not a reliable repair. Windows may continue loading the wrong version, or the driver may still be unable to find its dependencies.
Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the registration entry point expected by that utility. A printer UI or runtime DLL may not export DllRegisterServer.
Do not run:
regsvr32 hpcui155.dll
unless HP’s installer documentation specifically requires it. A registration error does not prove that the file is corrupt, and successful registration would not repair a mismatched printer driver.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET at random
There is no verified evidence that those runtimes are the primary remedy for this specific HP file. Install a runtime only when the HP installer or an identified dependency explicitly requires it.

Use it only as a fallback if the failure began immediately after a driver change and no current HP package works. It is not the first-line repair for a missing printer DLL.
