hpdf.dll Missing: Repair the App That Installed It Safely

If Windows says hpdf.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the program that installed it is usually damaged, incomplete, or pointing to the wrong file. hpdf.dll is not a Windows system file, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the parent application rather than download a loose DLL.

What this file actually does

hpdf.dll is a dynamic-link library associated with the Haru Free PDF Library, with the internal description Haru Free PDF Library [MinGW]. It provides PDF-generation functions that another Windows application can call when it creates, exports, prints, or previews PDF documents.

The file is third-party and application-specific. It does not normally belong in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64, and Windows does not provide a universal hpdf.dll redistributable.

Some applications bundle the file beside their main executable or inside a private bin, runtime, or program directory. A PDF-related library can therefore appear in software that is not itself a PDF reader. It may be part of an engineering tool, authoring program, reporting utility, game launcher, web application, or another program that generates PDF output.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.

The filename also needs careful handling. The upstream Haru library commonly uses the name libhpdf.dll, while some Windows applications use hpdf.dll. Those names may refer to related libraries, but they are not automatically interchangeable. They can differ in exported functions, compiler toolchain, architecture, build configuration, and companion dependencies.

The correct replacement must match the application that loads it.

Causes and symptoms

What you see Most likely cause Best first action
“hpdf.dll was not found” when one app starts Damaged or incomplete app installation Repair or reinstall that app
The error started after an update Failed update or incomplete launcher download Use the app’s update or file-verification feature
The file disappeared suddenly Antivirus quarantine or cleanup software Check Windows Security Protection history
“The procedure entry point could not be located” Wrong DLL version or incompatible build Restore the DLL from the app’s official package
“Not designed to run on Windows” Corrupt file, wrong architecture, or incompatible build Reinstall the complete parent application
The file exists but the program still fails A dependency of hpdf.dll is missing, or another copy is loading Check the error path and repair the full application
Several unrelated Windows programs fail Wider Windows component corruption Run DISM, then SFC
An old shortcut produces the error Orphaned or duplicate installation Inspect the shortcut target and reinstall the current app

First identify the application that owns hpdf.dll

Do not begin by searching for a replacement file. First determine which program is requesting it.

Read the complete error message

Look for the executable name or path in the dialog. It may identify a file such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
C:Program FilesVendorNameProductNameProductName.exe

or:

C:GamesExamplebinlauncher.exe

The executable next to the error is more useful than the DLL filename. That executable is normally the parent application whose installer should restore hpdf.dll.

Windows may display messages such as:

The code execution cannot proceed because hpdf.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.

You may also see:

This application has failed to start because hpdf.dll was not found.

Other variants include:

C:pathhpdf.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.

or:

The procedure entry point ... could not be located in ...

Record the exact wording before closing the message.

Check the shortcut target

If the error appears after clicking a shortcut:

  1. Right-click the shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Read the Target field.
  5. Note the folder containing the executable.
  6. Select Open File Location if the option is available.

The target can reveal an old installation, a second copy of the program, or a launcher that no longer points to the current installation.

Check installed applications

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps.
  5. Search for the program associated with the error.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Apps.
  4. Select Apps & features.
  5. Search for the program.

If you do not recognize the executable, check its folder and nearby files. Do not delete an unfamiliar program simply because it uses hpdf.dll. It may be part of legitimate software installed by your employer, a device vendor, or another application.

Fix 1: Repair the parent application

Repair is the safest first fix because it replaces missing files while preserving the application’s installation and, where supported, its settings.

Windows 11 installed apps

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the application named in the error.
  3. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  4. Choose Advanced options.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Wait for Windows to finish.
  7. Start the application again.

A successful repair normally produces no special message beyond completion. Test the operation that previously triggered the error, such as opening the program, exporting a report, or generating a PDF.

If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same page and use Reset only if you understand its effect. Reset can remove application data or restore default settings. Back up important application settings first.

Traditional desktop programs

Some desktop applications do not appear with an Advanced options page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type Control Panel.
  3. Open Control Panel.
  4. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  5. Select the affected application.
  6. Choose Repair, Change, or Modify.
  7. Follow the installer prompts.
  8. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
  9. Test the application.

If the installer offers a choice between repairing the program and removing it, choose repair first.

If repair fails

Repair may fail when the original installation cache is missing or when the application has been partially removed. In that case:

  1. Open the application’s official publisher website or the organization’s approved software portal.
  2. Download the installer for the same product.
  3. Match the installed edition and language where possible.
  4. Close the application.
  5. Run the installer.
  6. Choose Repair, Modify, or Reinstall if offered.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Test the application again.

If the publisher provides no repair option, uninstall the application from Installed apps or Programs and Features, restart Windows, and install it again from the official source. Reinstalling the parent application remains the definitive fix when its private DLL bundle is damaged.

Fix 2: Verify files through the application’s launcher

Games and launcher-managed applications often store hpdf.dll in a private installation directory. A launcher can restore it without requiring a full manual reinstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for a command named Verify files, Verify integrity, Scan and repair, Repair installation, or Check for updates.

For Steam-installed software:

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Right-click the affected game.
  4. Choose Properties.
  5. Select Installed Files.
  6. Choose Verify integrity of game files.
  7. Wait for the process to finish.
  8. Start the game again.

The launcher may report that files were reacquired or replaced. If it reports no problems but the error remains, close the launcher completely and reopen it. Then check whether the executable in the error belongs to the same installation that Steam verified.

For another launcher, use its built-in repair or verification command rather than copying hpdf.dll from a different computer. A launcher may also need administrator permission to write into a protected installation directory:

  1. Close the launcher.
  2. Right-click its shortcut.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Run its file verification or repair command.
  5. Restart the launcher normally.
  6. Test the application.

Running as administrator can help the repair process write files, but it does not make an incompatible DLL compatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection history

Antivirus software may quarantine a DLL after an update or after the application changes its files. A missing file that worked previously can therefore be a security event rather than an ordinary installation failure.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Choose Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections and quarantined items.
  7. Open an event that refers to the affected application or hpdf.dll.

Protection History keeps events for a limited period, so check it soon after the problem appears.

Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error. Confirm all of the following:

  • The event belongs to the application you intended to install.
  • The file was located inside that application’s official installation directory.
  • The application came from its publisher, an approved software portal, or a trusted launcher.
  • The detection is not a newly downloaded or unknown copy.

If the file is clearly legitimate, Windows Security may provide an Actions menu with Restore or Allow on device. Use those actions only after confirming the application and file source. Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safer alternative is often to reinstall the parent application after scanning the system. That restores the vendor’s complete package rather than relying on a quarantined loose file.

Fix 4: Check architecture, build, and dependent files

A DLL must match the process that loads it. A 32-bit application requires a 32-bit hpdf.dll; a 64-bit application requires a 64-bit DLL. This is true even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

The following combinations are not automatically interchangeable:

  • 32-bit and 64-bit builds
  • MinGW and MSVC builds
  • Debug and release builds
  • Different application versions
  • Different library ABI versions
  • Different builds with or without companion libraries

This is why renaming libhpdf.dll to hpdf.dll is not a valid general repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A message mentioning hpdf.dll can also conceal a dependency problem. The file may be present, but Windows may be unable to load a library that hpdf.dll itself needs. PDF libraries can be built with dependencies such as zlib or libpng, and an application may also require a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime.

Follow this order:

  1. Confirm that hpdf.dll is in the application’s expected folder.
  2. Check whether the error identifies another missing DLL.
  3. Repair or reinstall the complete application.
  4. Install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only if the error explicitly names a Visual C++ runtime or the application vendor requires one.
  5. Match the redistributable architecture to the application.

The current Microsoft package names include:

  • vc_redist.x86.exe
  • vc_redist.x64.exe
  • vc_redist.arm64.exe

Do not install a random runtime or DLL package just because its filename resembles the missing file. Older applications may require an older Visual C++ runtime installed side by side with newer versions.

If the application vendor supplied a 32-bit program, install the x86 runtime even on 64-bit Windows. If the program is 64-bit, use x64. When you cannot determine the architecture, reinstalling the application from its official installer is safer than guessing.

Fix 5: Update or reinstall a related driver only when appropriate

A graphics, printer, scanner, or other driver is not a normal source of hpdf.dll. Consider a driver repair only when the error appears inside a vendor driver package or the vendor’s own installer identifies the DLL as one of its components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the application, such as Printers, Imaging devices, Display adapters, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Right-click the relevant device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Record the provider and driver date.
  8. Select Update Driver if an approved update is available.

For a clean vendor repair:

  1. Disconnect the device if the vendor recommends doing so.
  2. Uninstall the vendor software from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Download the current package from the hardware manufacturer or your organization’s approved source.
  5. Install the complete package.
  6. Restart Windows again.
  7. Test the application that produced the error.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through hardware vendors and guessing which of many drivers is stale; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and when hpdf.dll belongs to a specific application, reinstalling that application remains the definitive fix.

Do not remove a working driver merely because hpdf.dll appears in an unrelated application error.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs are failing

hpdf.dll is not a Windows component, so System File Checker will not normally recreate it. Use Windows repair commands when several unrelated Windows features are failing, system files are corrupted, or the application error appeared alongside broader operating-system problems.

Open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.

Run DISM first:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Do not close the window until SFC reaches 100 percent.

What the results mean:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files were not detected as corrupted.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart Windows and retest.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Restart, run DISM again, and repeat SFC. If the issue continues, use Microsoft recovery options or repair the parent application directly.

These commands repair Windows components and protected system files. They do not normally supply a third-party application DLL.

If repeated manual DISM and SFC runs leave you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show the issues found in its free scan, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace the application vendor’s installer when that application owns hpdf.dll.

Fix 7: Use System Restore for a recent software change

System Restore can help when the error began immediately after an installation, update, driver change, or system modification.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the applications and drivers that may be changed.
  6. Select Close, then Next.
  7. Confirm the restore point.
  8. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore is not a replacement for reinstalling the parent program. If the restore does not resolve the error, reinstall the application from its official package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Windows 11, a broader repair option may also be available at Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. Where offered, this reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Use it for broad Windows problems, not as the first response to one missing application DLL.

Why copying hpdf.dll into System32 is a bad fix

Windows searches for DLLs according to defined loading rules. The application directory is normally searched before system directories, which allows an application to use the private library version it was built and tested with.

Copying an unrelated file into System32 or SysWOW64 can:

  • Leave the original application problem unresolved
  • Put the wrong architecture in a system directory
  • Cause another program to load an incompatible version
  • Hide the real source of the DLL
  • Create a security risk if the file is malicious
  • Make future troubleshooting more difficult

Do not download hpdf.dll from random DLL websites. The file may contain malware, may have the wrong architecture, may export the wrong functions, or may depend on other files that are also missing. A reported version or file size is not enough to establish compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safe sources are:

  • The affected application’s official installer
  • The application’s built-in repair function
  • The application’s official launcher and verification system
  • The publisher’s official support or download page
  • An approved organizational software repository

Why regsvr32 hpdf.dll normally does not help

regsvr32 registers COM and ActiveX DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A PDF-generation library is normally a callable library, not a COM component.

Running:

regsvr32 hpdf.dll

will not restore a missing file or repair its application dependencies. If it reports:

The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.

that generally means the DLL is not a self-registering COM component. The message does not prove that hpdf.dll is corrupt.

Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor’s instructions explicitly identify the DLL as a COM or ActiveX component and provide the correct registration command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the file exists but the error remains

A present DLL does not guarantee that Windows is loading the correct copy.

Check these possibilities:

  1. Compare the path in the error with the actual application directory.
  2. Inspect the shortcut target for an old installation.
  3. Check whether the application has both per-user and system-wide installations.
  4. Look for a second copy under another drive or user profile.
  5. Confirm that the launcher verified the same directory shown in the error.
  6. Check whether another dependency is named in a later error.
  7. Confirm that the application and DLL have matching architecture.
  8. Run the application from another Windows account as a diagnostic.

If only one account is affected, the cause may be a profile, path, permission, or per-user installation issue rather than a defective hpdf.dll.

If the error points to a folder belonging to software you already removed, inspect Task Manager > Startup apps, scheduled tasks, and old shortcuts for orphaned entries. Remove stale startup entries only after confirming that the associated software is no longer needed.

When to contact the software vendor

Contact the publisher or your organization’s software administrator when repair and reinstall do not work. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The exact error text
  • The full executable path
  • The full DLL path shown in the error
  • The application name and version
  • Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit, if known
  • Your Windows version
  • The time the error began
  • Recent updates or reinstallations
  • Windows Security Protection History events
  • The result of the application’s repair or file verification

Do not send a loose DLL from another computer as a workaround. The vendor needs to provide the complete matching application build.

FAQ

Is hpdf.dll a Windows file?

No. It is a third-party, application-specific PDF library. It normally comes from the program that uses it, not from Windows itself.

Can I download hpdf.dll separately?

There is no universal official Microsoft hpdf.dll download. Obtain it through the application’s official installer, repair process, or launcher verification.

Is hpdf.dll the same as libhpdf.dll?

Not automatically. They may be related Haru PDF library builds, but their names, exported interfaces, architecture, and dependencies can differ. Do not rename one to the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy it to System32?

No. The correct location is normally the application’s own directory. Copying a random DLL into a Windows system folder can cause compatibility and security problems.

Will SFC restore it?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while hpdf.dll is normally part of a third-party application. Repair or reinstall the parent application first.

Does regsvr32 fix this error?

Normally no. regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs, and hpdf.dll is ordinarily a PDF library rather than a COM component.

What if antivirus removed the file?

Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore or allow the file only after confirming that it came from the legitimate application package. Otherwise reinstall the application after scanning the system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the error mean my hard drive or Windows installation is failing?

Not necessarily. A damaged application update, incomplete installation, quarantine event, wrong build, or missing dependency is more directly relevant. Use DISM and SFC when other Windows components are also failing.

What is the most reliable fix?

Identify the executable named in the error, repair or verify that application, and reinstall it from the official source if necessary. This restores the matching hpdf.dll and its companion files together.
