“hpdjres.dll is missing” or “could not be loaded”
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because hpdjres.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading hpdjres.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “This application failed to start because hpdjres.dll was not found.”
- “The file hpdjres.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Failed to load hpdjres.dll.”

The important detail is that hpdjres.dll is an HP inkjet printer-driver component, not a normal game DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or general Windows application library.
The 60-second answer
Do not download hpdjres.dll from a random DLL website, copy it into System32, or register it with regsvr32.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Instead:
- Identify the HP printer connected to this Windows installation.
- Remove the printer from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Restart Windows.
- Add the printer again and allow Windows Update to install a compatible driver.
- If Windows cannot find one, install the exact model-specific driver from HP Support.
- If the problem affects every printer, repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
This works because the DLL is installed as part of a printer-driver package. Replacing one file does not restore its INF instructions, companion files, dependencies, architecture, or signing information.
What hpdjres.dll actually belongs to
Historical Windows printer-driver records describe hpdjres.dll as “HP Inkjet Printer Driver.” It appeared in older HP printer packages and historical Windows printer-driver files, including Windows 2000-era builds. Microsoft explains that printer drivers are collections of rendering and configuration components, commonly implemented as DLLs, rather than ordinary standalone applications.

The file may be stored inside Windows printer-driver storage, including a DriverStoreFileRepository subdirectory, instead of directly under C:WindowsSystem32. The precise location depends on the printer model, Windows release, driver package, and system architecture.
There is no universal version, size, publisher, or path for every copy of hpdjres.dll. Some old packages were 32-bit, while other records describe 64-bit driver files. Install the package intended for your exact printer and current Windows architecture instead of comparing filenames.
Find the printer that owns the error
Before changing files, establish which printer package is involved.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Review installed HP printers and note the exact model name.
- Open each likely printer and check its queue and settings.
- If the error appears while printing, opening printer properties, or installing a printer, that printer is the most likely owner.
Also note what changed immediately before the error:
- A Windows update
- An HP driver update
- Antivirus quarantine
- A cleanup utility
- A failed disk or system restore
- Restoring an old Windows image
- Moving from 32-bit software or an old Windows release to 64-bit Windows
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. It can also indicate a missing dependency or a damaged printer-driver installation.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the HP printer
This is the best first fix when the error is tied to one HP printer.
Remove the printer
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Click Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting:
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches for printers.
- Select the HP printer when it appears.
- Allow Windows Update to download and install the driver.
- Print a test page from the printer’s settings.
Microsoft’s printer-driver installation guidance recommends Windows Update as the first source for current drivers.

If Windows installs a basic driver
Windows may install a class or inbox driver that prints successfully but does not provide every HP-specific feature. Scanning, ink-level reporting, borderless printing, or advanced paper settings may be absent.
If that happens:
- Record the exact printer model.
- Open HP’s official Support site in your browser.
- Search for that model, not merely “HP inkjet.”
- Select your Windows version and architecture.
- Download the complete driver or software package offered for that model.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Print a test page.
HP may identify some old printers as unsupported on current Windows versions. Do not substitute a similarly named model or an old DLL from another package.
When hunting through several driver packages and checking which one matches the printer, Outbyte Driver Updater can show outdated driver entries in its free scan, while the full version performs the driver installation; reinstalling the exact HP package remains the definitive fix for hpdjres.dll.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFix 2: Check the driver architecture and compatibility
A 32-bit printer driver is not interchangeable with a 64-bit driver component. A Windows XP or Vista-era package may also fail on Windows 10 or Windows 11 even when its filename matches.
Check your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System > About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
Then check the installed driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the HP printer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version shown there.
If the error started after an update:
- Open the same Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Confirm the rollback.
- Restart Windows.
- Test printing.
If rollback is unavailable, select Uninstall Device, restart, and reinstall the correct package. Microsoft documents these update, uninstall, reinstall, and rollback steps in its Device Manager driver guidance.
On Windows 11 running on ARM, use Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device rather than forcing an incompatible manufacturer installer.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
If hpdjres.dll disappeared immediately after a security scan, check whether the driver file was quarantined.

- Open your antivirus or Windows Security application.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or Event history.
- Look for an entry naming hpdjres.dll or the HP printer package.
- Confirm that the detection belongs to the installed printer and not an unrelated downloaded file.
- Do not restore the file blindly.
- Reinstall the driver from Windows Update or the official HP model page.
A standalone DLL downloaded from an unknown source may be unsigned, modified, mismatched, or missing companion files. Reinstalling the complete signed package is safer than preserving a questionable copy.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when several Windows printer functions are failing, protected Windows files appear damaged, or driver installation repeatedly breaks. They are not a guaranteed way to recreate a third-party HP driver package.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the HP printer driver and test again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files against that store. Neither command should be expected to restore every HP-specific file, especially if the missing component belongs to an old driver package.
If you are repeatedly guessing which Windows components are damaged and rerunning DISM or SFC without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what its free scan finds; the full version handles its repair workflow, but reinstalling the HP driver remains the proper fix for this printer-specific DLL.
Fix 5: Restart the Print Spooler and remove stale queues
A damaged queue can trigger a DLL error even when the driver file exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Try printing again.
If the problem continues:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Remove unused or duplicate HP queues.
- Restart the Print Spooler again.
- Restart Windows.
- Add only the printer you still use.

Look for the printer name and driver name around the time of the failure. Multiple HP packages can coexist, so deleting a file manually may damage another queue.
Should you run regsvr32?
Normally, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that specifically support COM registration through an exported DllRegisterServer function. Printer-driver DLLs are normally installed as part of an INF-based driver package and are not automatically fixed by registering them.
Do not run this against hpdjres.dll merely because an error names it:
regsvr32 hpdjres.dll
If software documentation explicitly requires registration for a different COM DLL, use the executable matching that DLL’s architecture:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe "C:Pathcomponent.dll"
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:Pathcomponent.dll"
Microsoft explains these registration limitations in its DllRegisterServer troubleshooting guidance. That procedure does not make manual registration the correct repair for an HP printer-driver component.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not copy hpdjres.dll manually
Avoid copying the file into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A game directory
- An arbitrary application folder
That can introduce the wrong architecture, bypass driver signing, load an incompatible version, and leave the printer package incomplete. It can also make troubleshooting harder because Windows may load a stray copy instead of the file intended by the driver installation.
There is no authoritative current Microsoft or HP source offering hpdjres.dll as an independent download. Use Windows Update or the official HP driver page for the exact printer model.

FAQ
Is hpdjres.dll a Windows system file?
It is a legacy HP inkjet printer-driver component. It may have been distributed with older Windows printer packages, but it should not be treated as a universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 component.
Which HP printer installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the model. Check installed printers, the driver name in Device Manager, and PrintService logs.
Can I download hpdjres.dll separately?
That is not the safe repair path. Install the complete model-specific driver from Windows Update or HP Support.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does SFC restore hpdjres.dll?
Not reliably. SFC primarily repairs protected Windows files. A missing HP driver package normally requires printer removal and driver reinstallation.
Why does Windows say the module could not be found when the file exists?
A dependency may be missing, the driver may be the wrong architecture, or the printer package may be damaged. Reinstalling the complete compatible package addresses all three more reliably than copying the named DLL.
What if reinstalling the printer does not work?
Restart the Print Spooler, remove duplicate queues, inspect PrintService logs, verify the Windows architecture, check antivirus quarantine, and test the current HP package. If every printer fails, repair Windows with DISM followed by SFC and then reinstall the printer driver.
