- HP software was removed, but a startup task, service, or print component still references the DLL.
- Antivirus software quarantined an old driver file.
- Windows has driver-store or component corruption.
- A 32-bit legacy HP component is being loaded by the wrong process.
- The DLL is present, but another dependency is missing.
- An untrusted program placed a counterfeit file reference on the system.
The publicly listed file is 32-bit, version 0.3.3790.1830, and approximately 0.54 MB. Those inventory details are useful for comparison, but they are not proof that every copy with that name is authentic.
Fix 1: Reinstall the HP printer through Windows
Use this path first if you still own the printer or the error appears while printing, scanning, or opening HP software.
Remove the current printer
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if it is connected.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected HP printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.

- Reconnect the printer only if Windows asks for it.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to detect the printer.
- Select the printer and complete the installation.
- Print a Windows test page.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 may use an in-box driver for Photosmart C4600-series printers, so installing the entire legacy HP software suite may not be necessary. If Windows cannot find the printer, use the exact model on HP Support and install the package offered for your Windows version. Microsoft Update Catalog also lists HP Photosmart C4600-series DOT4 driver packages.
If the printer works and the error disappears at startup, the repair succeeded. If the same message returns, continue with the complete software removal below rather than copying the DLL manually.
Fix 2: Remove stale HP software when the printer is gone
If the error appears at every login but no HP printer is connected, the most likely problem is a leftover HP component.

Uninstall HP applications
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for HP, Photosmart, or the printer’s model name.
- Remove the related printer software, status monitor, imaging software, and toolbar entries.
- Restart the computer.
On older Windows installations, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and remove the same entries there.

- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Remove any old HP printer entries.
- Restart Windows.
If the startup error continues, inspect the item that launches it:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an HP entry that refers to the removed printer.
- Restart and check whether the message is gone.
Do not delete random files from System32 or the Windows driver store. If no HP printer has ever been installed, treat the reference as suspicious and inspect the executable path shown in the error, Task Manager, or Windows Security before restoring anything.
Fix 3: Check Device Manager and reinstall the driver
A damaged driver may not appear as a normal application.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the HP printer, an unknown device, or a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected item and select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Confirm the removal and restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device and install the printer again.
When Windows repeatedly reinstalls the same faulty package, open Print Management by pressing Win + R, entering printmanagement.msc, and pressing Enter. Under Custom Filters > Drivers, remove the obsolete HP driver only when you are certain no active printer depends on it. Windows Home editions may not include Print Management; use the printer manufacturer’s current installer or Windows Settings instead.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
A legitimate old driver file may have been quarantined, although the filename alone does not prove that a quarantined copy is safe.

- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving

sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends repairing the component store with DISM before running SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, test the printer again. If it reports no integrity violations but hpfevw73.dll is still missing, reinstall or remove the HP package instead.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed is often frustrating when the real problem is an obsolete printer entry. Understand the 32-bit issue

Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 to make it work. On 64-bit Windows, that folder is primarily associated with 64-bit system components, and moving files between System32 and SysWOW64 does not convert their architecture.
A “specified module could not be found” message can also mean that hpfevw73.dll exists but one of its dependencies does not. Reinstalling the complete HP package is safer than trying to identify and replace individual dependencies.
Why Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are usually irrelevant
There is no reliable evidence that hpfevw73.dll is a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. Installing those runtimes at random is unlikely to repair an HP printer-driver reference.

- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not remove personal files, but it can remove recently installed drivers and applications. Afterward, install only the current driver needed for the printer.

How to tell what is really failing
Before escalating, record:
- The complete error text.
- The executable named in the message.
- The path where Windows looked for
hpfevw73.dll. - Whether the DLL exists anywhere on the disk.
- The Windows 10 or Windows 11 version and build.
- The exact HP printer model.
- Whether the printer is still connected or needed.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined a related file.
