hpfigw73.dll is an HP DeskJet printer component, not a normal Windows system file. When Windows reports that hpfigw73.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to remove the damaged HP printer package and reinstall the correct software for your exact printer model.
Do not download this DLL from a random file site or copy it into System32. The file belongs to an HP DeskJet installation, and replacing only one DLL can leave the underlying driver, dependency, printer queue, or imaging component broken.

What hpfigw73.dll is
The file is identified as HP DeskJet Imaging DLL, associated with HP DeskJet software and Hewlett-Packard Company. Some public metadata also reports the internal name HPFIMG00.DLL.
It is generally associated with older HP printer software rather than:

Public file listings describe a 32-bit build with version 0.3.4.11 and a size of roughly 0.4 MB. Other metadata sources disagree about architecture and file details, so do not use a download-site listing to choose a replacement. The correct architecture is selected by the complete HP package for your printer and Windows installation.
The exact DeskJet model that originally installed hpfigw73.dll is not reliably identified by the public metadata. The error may appear when you:
- Start HP printer software or HP Printer Assistant
- Print or scan
- Open printer maintenance tools
- Log in to Windows after an old HP installation
- Remove an outdated printer
- Complete a Windows upgrade or driver update
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete HP printer package
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the primary fix because a missing HP DLL usually indicates an incomplete, damaged, outdated, or partially removed printer installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute1. Identify the exact printer model
Look at the printer itself, its original label, or the printer listed in Windows.
In Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Record the full model name.
In Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Record the full model name.
Do not rely only on a general name such as “HP DeskJet.” The installer must match the exact model.
2. Uninstall HP software
- Disconnect the USB printer cable. If the printer is connected over Wi-Fi, turn it off temporarily.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for entries beginning with HP, Hewlett-Packard, HP DeskJet, HP Printer Assistant, or the specific printer model.
- Select each relevant HP printer entry.
- Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
If the HP software is not listed, continue with the printer and driver removal steps below. A failed uninstall often leaves the broken component registered in Windows.
3. Remove the remaining printer
After restarting:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Devices → Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Select every copy of the affected HP printer.
- Select Remove or Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
Then remove older entries from Control Panel:
- Press
Windows key + R. - Type
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Right-click any remaining copy of the HP printer.
- Select Remove device.
If Windows says the printer is in use, restart again and repeat the removal before reconnecting the printer.

4. Install the current HP package
Open the official HP Support site manually and use its Software and Driver Downloads page for printers. Search for the exact model you recorded.
Choose the package HP recommends for your version of Windows. Depending on the model, this may be a full-feature driver, HP Easy Start, or another HP-recommended printer package.
- Download the installer from HP.
- Right-click the downloaded installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms.
- Allow the installer to detect or configure the printer.
- Reconnect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Complete a test print and, if applicable, a test scan.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer. The full installer places the correct files, dependencies, services, and printer configuration together.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The HP application opens without the
hpfigw73.dllerror. - The printer appears once, rather than through several stale entries.
- A test page prints.
- Scanning or printer maintenance functions open normally.
- The error does not return after restarting Windows.
If the installer fails, remove the printer again, restart, and repeat the installation with the printer disconnected until the installer asks for it.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software can quarantine an old printer component. This is more likely if the error began immediately after a security scan or an HP software update.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry naming
hpfigw73.dll, HP printer software, or the affected installation directory.
Do not restore the file merely because its name looks familiar. A DLL with the expected filename is not automatically safe.
Restore it only when all of these are true:
- The file came from an authentic HP installer.
- The printer model and installation are known.
- The detection is clearly a false positive.
- Windows Security identifies the original location and package.
If you cannot verify those details, leave the file quarantined. Remove the HP package and reinstall it from HP instead. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan before reinstalling if the detection was suspicious.

Fix 3: Remove stale drivers with Device Manager
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
A failed uninstall can leave an old HP driver attached to the printer. This can cause Windows to load the wrong component even after the visible HP application has been removed.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Disconnect the printer.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers and Print queues.
- Right-click entries matching the HP printer.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows displays Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it when available.
- Confirm the removal.
- Expand Imaging devices or Scanners.
- Remove an old HP scanner entry if it clearly belongs to the retired installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the complete package from HP.
Do not remove unrelated printers or imaging devices. If several HP entries have similar names, use the exact model and connection information to identify the affected device.
For a more thorough printer-driver cleanup:
- Press
Windows key + R. - Type
printui /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the old HP driver for the affected model.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that option.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current HP package.
If Windows refuses to remove the driver because it is in use, stop the Print Spooler service temporarily:
- Press
Windows key + R. - Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Right-click Print Spooler.
- Select Stop.
- Remove the driver from Print Server Properties.
- Return to Services.
- Right-click Print Spooler.
- Select Start.
- Restart Windows and reinstall the HP package.
Fix 4: Update the printer driver from Windows
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Windows Update may provide a compatible driver, particularly when HP no longer offers a modern full-feature package for an older model. A Windows-provided driver may print successfully but omit HP scanning, maintenance, or imaging functions.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install an update that clearly matches the HP printer.
- Restart Windows.
- Test printing and scanning.
You can also update through Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers or Print queues.
- Right-click the HP printer.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not use a generic driver update to replace the complete HP software when the error occurs inside HP Printer Assistant or scanning software. In that situation, reinstall the model-specific HP package.
If manually hunting through Windows Update and manufacturer packages leaves you guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full-version driver installation is optional, and the official HP package remains the definitive repair for this HP-specific DLL.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Windows repair tools are secondary here. hpfigw73.dll is identified as an HP file, so SFC normally will not restore it. Use these commands when other Windows files are also missing, applications are failing broadly, or the HP installer reports system corruption.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the HP installation.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test the printer again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the commands once more, then repair or reinstall the HP package separately.

- ICON LCD – Print your basic documents with ease from the intuitive control panel

If repeatedly running SFC and DISM leaves you unsure which Windows components changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show a scan of detected Windows problems; any paid repair is optional, and reinstalling the exact HP printer package remains the definitive fix for hpfigw73.dll.
Fix 6: Check the file path and dependency error
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may find hpfigw73.dll but fail to load a dependency it requires.
When the error appears:
- Note the complete message.
- Record the application that displays it.
- Record any path shown in the message.
- Open File Explorer.
- Search the affected HP installation folders for
hpfigw73.dll. - Do not move, rename, or replace the file.
- Reinstall the complete HP package if the file is absent.
- If the file exists but still will not load, remove and reinstall the package rather than copying another version.
A 32-bit HP application on 64-bit Windows may require a 32-bit printer component. Public metadata for this file is inconsistent, so do not assume that a 64-bit replacement is correct. Let the official installer select the architecture and dependency set.
Fix 7: Use System Restore only for a recent system change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
If the error began immediately after a Windows upgrade, driver update, or software change, System Restore may help when a suitable restore point exists.
- Press
Windows key + R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the applications and drivers that will be changed.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore reverts applications, settings, and system state. It does not replace the need to install the correct HP package if the printer driver itself is damaged.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the registration entry points required by components such as COM or ActiveX controls. There is no verified evidence that hpfigw73.dll is a self-registering component.
Running commands such as regsvr32 hpfigw73.dll is therefore not the normal repair. It may produce another error and does not install missing dependencies, printer queues, services, or HP imaging software.
Use regsvr32 only if HP specifically instructs you to register this file for your exact printer package.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A standalone download can be:
- The wrong HP package version
- The wrong architecture
- Missing required dependencies
- Altered or malicious
- Intended for a different printer model
- Placed in the wrong directory
- Unable to repair the damaged printer registration
Copying a file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder can also create version conflicts. The safe sources are the official HP support page for the exact printer model, Windows Update, or the original installation media.

FAQ
Is hpfigw73.dll a Windows system file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a general Windows component. It is associated with HP DeskJet printer software.
Which HP printer model uses it?
The exact model is not reliably established by the available public metadata. Identify the printer that was installed on the affected computer and reinstall its exact HP package.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not. There is no verified evidence that this DLL belongs to those runtimes. Reinstall the HP printer software first.
What if the printer still prints?
Windows may be using a generic printer driver while HP scanning or maintenance software remains broken. Reinstall the full HP package if those features fail or the error continues.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if the HP printer has been retired?
If the error appears at every login, uninstall the obsolete HP software and remove its startup entry. Replacing the DLL is unnecessary when the printer is no longer used.
Can SFC restore hpfigw73.dll?
Usually no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not ordinary third-party HP driver files. Use it only when broader Windows corruption is suspected.
What information should I collect if the error remains?
Record the exact printer model, Windows version and build, complete error text, named file path, application showing the error, whether the file exists, and any HP installer failure message. This distinguishes a missing file from a missing dependency or an unsupported legacy package.
