hpfime50.dll is a legacy Hewlett-Packard printer component, and its absence usually points to damaged or incomplete HP DeskJet software. If Windows says hpfime50.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, reinstall the affected printer package rather than downloading the DLL by itself.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record:
- The exact error message
- The printer model shown in Windows
- Whether the error appears during printing, Windows startup, printer installation, or when opening another program
- Your Windows version and build
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The full file path shown in the error, Event Viewer, or installation log
Commonly reported messages include:
- “The program can’t start because hpfime50.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting hpfime50.dll.”
- “Error loading hpfime50.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because hpfime50.dll was not found.”
- “hpfime50.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording varies by Windows version and by the program loading the file. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by hpfime50.dll is missing.

The commonly indexed copy is reported as:
- Version:
0.5.1.0 - Architecture: 32-bit
- Size: approximately 0.27 MB
Those details describe a commonly indexed historical file, not a guarantee that every HP package contains the same build. The filename alone cannot identify the exact printer model that installed it.

This is not a normal Windows system DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. Do not start by installing a Microsoft redistributable or copying the file into System32.
Do not download the DLL separately
Avoid DLL download sites and random file mirrors. A replacement may have the wrong revision, architecture, language resources, or dependencies. It may also be modified or bundled with unwanted software. Even a genuine copy may not repair the damaged printer package that Windows is actually trying to load.
Do not copy hpfime50.dll into System32, SysWOW64, the printer folder, or an arbitrary application directory as a first-line repair. Use the official HP installer for the exact printer model, Windows Update, or original HP installation media.

This is the most likely solution.
Remove the printer
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected HP printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the HP printer.
- Select Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
If several HP printers are listed, note each model before removing anything. Multiple HP driver packages can coexist, and repairing one DeskJet package may not repair another.
Remove the related HP application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the printer model or HP software.
- Select the HP entry.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair first.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not help, select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Some older HP packages use their own uninstaller. If the HP software includes a maintenance utility, choose its repair or removal option instead of deleting folders manually.
Install the correct package
Download the driver or full software package from HP’s official printer support page. Search by the exact printer model and select your version of Windows. Do not choose a similar DeskJet model merely because its name looks close.
During installation:
- Disconnect the printer if the installer requests it.
- Run the HP installer.
- Approve the administrator prompt.
- Follow the connection instructions for USB or network setup.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Print a Windows test page.
A successful repair means the printer appears under Printers & scanners, the HP software opens without the DLL error, and a test page prints normally.

Fix 2: Reinstall the printer through Windows Update
If HP no longer provides a usable package for the printer, Windows may supply a compatible driver.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches for the printer.
- If it appears, select it and complete setup.
- If it does not appear, choose the option indicating that the printer is not listed.
- Follow the manual discovery options.
- Check Windows Update when Windows offers a larger driver list.
- Select the exact manufacturer and model when available.
- Print a test page.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the preferred source for printer drivers. A Windows-provided driver may support basic printing without restoring every feature of an old HP software suite.
If the printer is obsolete, a generic or built-in driver may be the practical solution. Do not substitute a random DeskJet driver. A similar model can install successfully while still leaving the wrong files or features in place.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When you are hunting through several driver packages or trying to determine which installed driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its repair and driver installation features require the full version. For this file, however, the exact HP model-specific installer remains the definitive repair.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine an old printer component, especially after a security-definition update.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry mentioning
hpfime50.dll, HP printer software, or the installer you recently used. - Expand the entry and review its location and details.
Restore or allow the file only if all of the following are true:
- It came from the official HP installer or original HP media
- The path belongs to the HP printer package
- You have confirmed the printer model
- The detection is a false positive
If you are not certain, do not restore the file. Remove the damaged HP package and reinstall it from HP instead. Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can expose the device.
After reinstalling, run a full Windows Security scan. If the DLL disappears again, investigate the detection rather than repeatedly downloading replacement copies.
Fix 4: Check the installed driver in Device Manager
Device Manager can reveal a failed or partially installed printer driver, although it may not list hpfime50.dll by name.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers and Print queues.
- Look for the HP printer or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver and select Search automatically for drivers.
- If Windows cannot repair it, return to the device menu.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm removal, choosing the option to remove the driver package if Windows presents it.
- Restart Windows.
- Add the printer again through Settings > Printers & scanners.
The exact wording differs between Windows releases. Do not uninstall unrelated entries merely because they contain “HP.” Check the model and printer port first.
If Device Manager reports that the best driver is already installed but the DLL error continues, use the complete HP package or Windows printer setup rather than repeating the same automatic search.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The commonly indexed hpfime50.dll is reported as a 32-bit file. That does not automatically make it invalid on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit Windows installation can use a 32-bit DLL when a 32-bit print component or process loads it.
The important rule is that the DLL architecture must match the process or driver context using it.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Find System type.
- Record whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Do not use that information to choose a random DLL. Let the HP installer place the appropriate files. Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32 or SysWOW64 based on Internet instructions.
A message saying the file is “not designed to run on Windows” can indicate a damaged file, an incompatible package, a dependency problem, or an architecture mismatch. Reinstalling the exact printer package is safer than trying to force the file into a different folder.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker are useful when Windows itself is damaged. They are not the primary repair for an HP-owned printer DLL.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Run the commands separately and allow each one to complete. Restart Windows afterward and test the printer.

- KEY FEATURES – Color print, copy, scan, a 35-sheet auto document feeder and a 60-sheet input tray, plus mobile and wireless printing

- ICON LCD – Print your basic documents with ease from the intuitive control panel
- PRINT SPEED – Up to 8.5 ppm black, 5.5 ppm color
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command guarantees that a missing HP driver DLL will be restored.
If you keep repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version. Reinstalling the affected HP printer software remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that package.

Fix 7: Try System Restore after a recent driver change
Use System Restore if the error started immediately after a printer installation, Windows update, driver change, or cleanup and a restore point is available.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system settings, drivers, and installed software changes. It does not normally remove ordinary personal files.
After the rollback, prevent the same damaged HP package from being installed again until you have identified a compatible driver.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not run:
regsvr32 hpfime50.dll
as a general repair. Printer-driver DLLs are loaded by the Windows print subsystem and are not automatically COM self-registering libraries. regsvr32 works only when a DLL provides the required registration entry point, commonly DllRegisterServer.
If that entry point is absent, the command produces an error rather than repairing the printer. Registration also cannot replace a missing dependency, correct an incompatible driver package, or fix a corrupted installation.
Use regsvr32 only when the official software documentation specifically instructs you to register that particular DLL.
Why Windows Features is not the answer
Windows Features is intended for optional Windows components such as .NET Framework features, legacy components, and virtualization tools. hpfime50.dll is associated with HP printer software, not an optional Windows feature.

Do not enable random features to repair it. Installing .NET, DirectX, or a Visual C++ package has no verified connection to this file. If an HP installer explicitly reports a missing prerequisite, follow that installer’s documented requirement, but do not assume a runtime will restore the HP DLL.
If the error continues after reinstalling
Collect these details before contacting HP or Microsoft support:
- Exact printer model
- Windows edition, version, and architecture
- Complete error text
- Full path shown for
hpfime50.dll - Whether the error appears at startup, during printing, or during setup
- HP package name and installation result
- Any Protection History detection
- Device Manager status
- Relevant Event Viewer entry
To check Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Review errors recorded at the time the message appeared.
- Note the failing application, module path, and dependency information.
If the error returns after every clean reinstall, investigate disk errors, malware, security software, damaged Windows servicing, or a corrupt user profile. If the printer is no longer supported, replacing it or using a Windows-provided driver may be more reliable than preserving unsupported legacy software.
FAQ
Which HP printer installed hpfime50.dll?
The filename does not identify one exact model. It is associated with legacy HP DeskJet software, but several HP packages may use related components. Use the printer list, installed HP software, file path, and installation history to identify the package.
Is hpfime50.dll part of Windows?
There is no evidence that it is a normal Windows system file. It is associated with Hewlett-Packard printer software. Repair the HP package before attempting Windows-wide repairs.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIs the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
The commonly indexed version is reported as 32-bit, version 0.5.1.0, and approximately 0.27 MB. Verify the actual installed package rather than assuming every current HP installer contains that exact file.
Can I download hpfime50.dll by itself?
No. A standalone download can be unsafe or incompatible and usually leaves the damaged printer installation unresolved. Reinstall the exact HP driver or use Windows Update.
Does “specified module could not be found” mean the DLL is gone?
Not always. The named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. Check the printer package, installation path, antivirus history, and Event Viewer.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no verified evidence that those packages repair hpfime50.dll. They should not be the first response to this printer-driver error.
Should I run SFC and DISM?
Run them when Windows components appear damaged or Windows Update is failing. They are secondary repairs and are not guaranteed to restore an HP printer DLL.
What if HP no longer supports my printer?
Try Windows Update, the built-in printer driver, original HP installation media, or a compatible driver listed for the exact model. If none works reliably, replacing the obsolete printer may be the safer solution.
