“hpgt33.dll is missing,” “hpgt33.dll was not found,” and “Error loading hpgt33.dll. The specified module could not be found” are common forms of this error. hpgt33.dll is the legacy HP3300 Module, associated with the HP ScanJet 3300C scanner driver rather than a modern Windows runtime, game, or Microsoft Visual C++ package.

The 60-second answer

If the error appears when opening HP scanning software or using an HP ScanJet 3300C, repair or reinstall the complete HP ScanJet software package, including HP PrecisionScan. Do not download an isolated copy of hpgt33.dll from a DLL website.

On Windows 10 and Windows 11, the ScanJet 3300C series is officially unsupported by HP, so a missing file may indicate that the old driver cannot operate correctly on your current Windows installation. In that situation, use a supported scanner, a properly isolated legacy Windows environment, or scanning software that explicitly supports the hardware.

If the message appears during Windows startup and you no longer use an HP scanner, check startup entries, antivirus quarantine, and recent cleanup activity before replacing anything.

What is hpgt33.dll

hpgt33.dll has the internal description HP3300 Module. Evidence associates it with the Windows Imaging Architecture driver stack for the HP ScanJet 3300C series, including related files such as:

  • hpgt33tk.dll
  • hpgtmcro.dll
  • wiafbdrv.dll
  • usbscan.sys

The ScanJet 3300C family includes variants such as the 3300Cse and 3300Cxi. The exact installation can differ by model and operating system, but the files belong to the same legacy HP scanner-driver family.

This is not normally:

  • A Visual C++ Redistributable file
  • A DirectX component
  • A .NET file
  • A current Windows 10 or Windows 11 system component
  • A game launcher dependency

Older Windows XP file inventories place hpgt33.dll in C:WINDOWSSystem32dllcache, which is consistent with a protected or inbox driver component on that operating system. Third-party records commonly identify version 1.0.0.1 and a size of approximately 89,088 bytes, but those details are not a current Microsoft specification and should not be used alone to authenticate a file.

Why the error appears

The usual causes are:

Cause What it means Correct response
HP software was removed or damaged The scanner program can no longer find its driver module Reinstall the complete HP package
Windows was reinstalled The old scanner software was not restored Install the matching legacy package
Cleanup or antivirus removed the file A cleanup tool or quarantine action deleted it Check quarantine and verify the system
Windows 10 or 11 is being used The scanner has no supported current HP driver Use legacy Windows, compatible software, or replace the scanner
A dependency is missing The message names hpgt33.dll, but another required module is absent Check Device Manager, USB, services, and application logs
The file is in an unexpected folder It may be an unrelated or fake file Scan the system and inspect the calling process

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that hpgt33.dll itself is absent. Windows may find the named DLL but fail to load one of its dependencies.

Fix 1: Reinstall the complete HP ScanJet software

This is the safest and most likely fix when the error appears while scanning or launching HP PrecisionScan.

On Windows XP or Windows 2000

Use the original HP installation CD or the official HP ScanJet 3300C support page to obtain the correct operating-system package. HP’s legacy instructions refer to HP PrecisionScan LT, LTX, and Pro packages.

  1. Disconnect the scanner’s USB cable.
  2. Open Control Panel.
  3. Select Add or Remove Programs.
  4. Remove existing HP ScanJet, HP PrecisionScan, or scanner software entries.
  5. Restart Windows if prompted.
  6. Run the compatible HP installer from the original media or official HP package.
  7. Complete the software installation before reconnecting the scanner.
  8. Shut down Windows.
  9. Connect the scanner and switch it on.
  10. Start Windows and allow hardware detection to finish.
  11. Open HP PrecisionScan and perform a test scan.

If the installer asks for a device during setup, follow its instructions. Do not connect the scanner early when HP’s instructions specifically require it to remain disconnected.

A successful repair should restore the HP scanning application and allow the scanner to appear in Device Manager without a yellow warning icon. If the file is still missing, the installation media may be damaged, the wrong operating-system package may have been selected, or Windows system files may also be corrupted.

On Windows 7 or Windows 8

The old HP installer may work only partially. Download the scanner software intended for the exact ScanJet model and operating system from HP’s official support page, then:

  1. Unplug the scanner.
  2. Remove the existing HP scanner software from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Right-click the HP installer and choose Run as administrator.
  5. Install the software.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Connect and power on the scanner.
  8. Open Device Manager and expand Imaging devices or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  9. Confirm that Windows detects the scanner without a warning icon.
  10. Test both the HP application and any WIA or TWAIN-compatible application.

If Windows reports that the driver is unsigned, incompatible, or blocked, do not force a random DLL into a system folder. That is a compatibility problem, not a missing-file problem that manual copying will solve.

On Windows 10 or Windows 11

HP lists the ScanJet 3300C series as unsupported on Windows 10 and does not provide a current HP driver option for it. Windows Update and modern Microsoft runtime packages should not be expected to supply hpgt33.dll.

You can still try the old HP package as an unguaranteed compatibility workaround:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click the installer.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Enable Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Try Windows XP or another version appropriate to the installer.
  6. Enable Run this program as an administrator.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.
  8. Run the installer.
  9. Reconnect the scanner only when the installation is complete.
  10. Test the scanner through the installed software.

Compatibility mode does not create a supported driver. The installer may run while the scanner still fails because of USB, WIA, 32-bit driver, or hardware limitations.

For regular use, the practical choices are a supported modern scanner, a controlled legacy Windows XP setup, or third-party scanning software that explicitly supports the particular ScanJet model. Compatibility with one model or Windows build does not guarantee compatibility with another.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software or a cleanup tool may remove an old driver component, especially if the file is in an unusual location or has a reputation problem.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Expand the event involving hpgt33.dll.
  7. Review the detected path, threat name, and affected process.
  8. Do not restore the file if it came from a writable temporary folder, an unknown application, or a suspicious download.
  9. If it is clearly part of the original HP installation and the system is clean, use the available restore or allow action.
  10. Reinstall the complete HP package afterward rather than relying on the restored file alone.

Restoring a quarantined file can cause Microsoft Defender to detect it again. Do not disable antivirus merely to install a downloaded DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the file was found outside the expected HP or Windows driver locations, scan the computer and investigate the parent process. A file named hpgt33.dll is not automatically genuine just because its name is correct.

Fix 3: Repair Windows system files

Use this path when several Windows components are failing, Windows File Protection reports an error, or the problem started after broader system corruption.

These commands apply to supported modern Windows versions, not Windows XP.

Run DISM first

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to complete.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the computer and test the HP software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SFC repairs protected Windows files. It will not create a supported modern driver for an obsolete ScanJet, and it will not replace the complete HP PrecisionScan installation.

When manually hunting through Windows component versions and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan that shows detected problems; repairs are completed by the full version, and it is not required for this fix.

On Windows XP, use the original installation media and the operating system’s own System File Protection or repair options instead of applying the modern DISM procedure.

Fix 4: Check Device Manager and the scanner connection

A device problem can produce a DLL-looking error because the application cannot initialize the scanner driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win+X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Look for the HP ScanJet or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected entry and choose Properties.
  6. Read the message under Device status.
  7. Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version.
  8. Disconnect the scanner.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Connect the scanner directly to a different USB port, avoiding an unpowered hub.
  11. Turn on the scanner before opening the scanning application.

If Device Manager shows Code 10, Code 28, or another driver error, reinstalling hpgt33.dll alone is not the solution. The complete driver, USB connection, device power, or operating-system compatibility must be corrected.

When updating drivers manually means checking many old packages and guessing which device entry is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show the relevant results; the full version performs driver installation, but replacing the unsupported scanner remains the definitive fix when Windows cannot support it.

Fix 5: Use System Restore

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after installing HP software, a driver, a cleanup utility, or a Windows change.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Choose a different restore point if that option appears.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error started.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs.
  5. Review the applications and drivers that will be removed or restored.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can undo drivers, applications, and system changes. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the complete HP software reinstall or consider replacing the unsupported scanner.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that hpgt33.dll is a self-registering COM component.

Running either command is unlikely to repair this file:

regsvr32 hpgt33.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32hpgt33.dll

Possible results include “entry point not found” or “the module was loaded but the entry point was not found.” Those messages do not prove that the DLL is missing. They usually mean the DLL is not designed for manual COM registration.

Do not copy the file into both System32 and SysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native 64-bit system directory while SysWOW64 stores 32-bit system components. A 32-bit legacy scanner DLL belongs with the application or driver package that installs it, not in whichever folder a generic DLL guide recommends.

How to identify the real caller

If the error does not appear when scanning, find out which program is requesting the file.

  1. Note when the message appears.
  2. Check whether HP PrecisionScan, a TWAIN application, or a startup item opens at that moment.
  3. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  4. Select Startup apps.
  5. Disable only an entry clearly associated with obsolete HP scanner software.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. If the error disappears, the startup entry is orphaned or its installation is incomplete.
  8. Remove or reinstall the related HP software instead of restoring a standalone DLL.

If the message appears only in one application, repair that application and check its logs. If it appears before login, investigate startup items and recent security actions. If it appears while scanning, concentrate on the HP driver, WIA, TWAIN, USB connection, and scanner compatibility.

Frequently asked questions

Is hpgt33.dll a Windows file or an HP file?

It is an HP ScanJet 3300C-related module used in a legacy WIA scanner-driver stack. Older Windows XP installations may contain it in a protected system cache, but it should not be treated as a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 runtime.

Does it belong to the ScanJet 3300Cse and 3300Cxi?

The evidence identifies the broader HP ScanJet 3300C series. The 3300Cse and 3300Cxi are variants, but use the driver package for the exact model shown on the scanner label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there an official standalone hpgt33.dll download?

There is no verified current official standalone download identified for this file. Obtain it through the complete HP ScanJet software package or original compatible installation media. Avoid isolated DLL downloads.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

No. There is no evidence that hpgt33.dll belongs to those runtimes. Installing them will not repair a missing HP scanner driver.

Why does the error appear after reinstalling Windows?

A Windows reinstall removes the old HP software, driver files, startup entries, and device configuration. The scanner may need its complete PrecisionScan package installed again, and modern Windows may not support that package.

Can I use the scanner if the HP buttons do not work?

Possibly. Basic WIA or TWAIN scanning may work while old physical scan or copy buttons remain unavailable. That is a limitation of the legacy software integration, not necessarily a missing-DLL failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I stop repairing the scanner?

Stop when HP provides no supported driver for your Windows version, compatibility mode cannot initialize the device, or repeated reinstalls produce the same driver errors. At that point, a supported scanner or an isolated legacy Windows environment is safer and more reliable than continuing to copy system files.
