Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The hphidr11.dll missing error usually means an old HP printer component is damaged, incomplete, quarantined, or being launched after its printer software was removed. hphidr11.dll is part of HP Dot4Rtl, a legacy HP printer communication component described internally as the IEEE-1284.4-1999 Run-time library (kernel).
It is not a normal Windows component, Visual C++ file, DirectX file, or .NET file. The safest repair is to identify the HP printer or utility that needs it, then reinstall the matching HP software rather than downloading the DLL by itself.

Which fix applies to you
Use this list before changing anything:
- The error names an HP printer utility or appears when printing: reinstall the software and driver for that exact HP printer model.
- The error started after an HP driver update, Windows update, cleanup, or uninstall: remove the damaged HP package and install it again.
- The file disappeared after a security scan: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- The printer still works but a popup appears at sign-in: remove the stale HP startup entry, printer software, or driver.
- The message says the file is not designed to run on Windows: suspect an incompatible or damaged legacy package, not a missing runtime such as Visual C++.
- You do not know which program is requesting the file: inspect the error window, startup items, Event Viewer, and installed HP software.
- The error began immediately after a system change: consider System Restore after checking the HP installation.
- You downloaded a replacement DLL already: do not copy it into Windows folders until its source and architecture are verified. Reinstalling the complete HP package is safer.
What hphidr11.dll does
hphidr11.dll belongs to the HP Dot4Rtl software family. DOT4 refers to the IEEE-1284.4 communication method used by many older HP printers and multifunction devices, particularly over USB.

The file may appear alongside other HP files, INF driver files, and DOT4-related components. An old HP installation may have placed it in a Windows system directory, but that does not make it a Microsoft Windows file.

Historical file listings identify it as a Win32, or 32-bit, library. That information helps explain compatibility problems, but it does not tell you to copy the file into both System32 and SysWOW64. Those folders have different purposes on 64-bit Windows, and the correct location is selected by the HP installer.
The exact printer cannot be identified from the filename alone. Several HP printer packages used related DOT4 components, so reinstalling software for the wrong model may leave the error unchanged.
Fix 1: Identify and reinstall the correct HP package
This is the primary fix.
Step 1: Find the printer model
Check the printer itself for a model label. You can also use Windows:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Review the installed printers and note the exact HP model.
- Select the printer and check its available properties.
If the printer is disconnected, look in Settings > Apps > Installed apps for entries beginning with HP, Hewlett-Packard, HP Photosmart, HP LaserJet, HP Deskjet, HP Officejet, or HP Solution Center.
Also check Control Panel:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Sort the installed programs by name.
- Record every HP printer or scanning utility listed.
Do not assume that the first HP entry is the one responsible. More than one HP printer package can remain installed on the same computer.
Step 2: Download the model-specific package
Use HP’s official printer software and driver support page. Search for the exact model, then select the Windows version detected on the computer.
Prefer the complete package when it is available. A basic print driver may make the printer print again without restoring scanning utilities, status software, or other HP components that request hphidr11.dll.

For an older USB-connected printer, look for a package described as a USB (DOT4) communication driver or a similarly named DOT4 communications driver. Some HP documentation provides separate 32-bit and 64-bit DOT4 installers. Select the installer matching Windows, not merely the apparent age of the DLL.
To check Windows architecture:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type under Device specifications.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit HP programs, but the HP package must still be compatible with that Windows release. Do not use a 32-bit installer simply because hphidr11.dll is historically a 32-bit file.

Step 3: Remove the damaged package if necessary
If the HP installer refuses to proceed or the error returns immediately:
- Disconnect the USB printer.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove the HP printer software associated with the model.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the HP installer you downloaded.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it.
If the old software does not appear in Settings, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and remove it there.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a printer driver that remains after the software is removed:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Select an empty area of the window.
- Select Print server properties from the toolbar or menu.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the obsolete HP driver.
- Choose Remove and, when offered, remove the driver and driver package.
Do not remove a driver that belongs to a printer you still use unless you are prepared to reinstall it.
How to tell whether this worked
Restart Windows and repeat the action that produced the error. A successful repair normally means:
- the HP utility opens without the DLL message;
- the printer appears without a warning icon;
- Windows can print a test page;
- the scanner, if applicable, is detected by the HP software;
- no HP error appears at sign-in.
If printing works but an old HP popup remains, the remaining problem may be a stale startup item rather than a missing printer runtime.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may quarantine a legacy HP file after a scan. Do not restore a file solely because its name matches hphidr11.dll. A malicious file can use the same filename.
To inspect the event:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open the relevant entry and record its path, detection name, and date.
If the quarantined file is clearly inside the official HP installation and you are certain the package is legitimate, follow the available Windows Security option to allow or restore it. If the path is a temporary folder, a random download directory, or an unknown application folder, leave it quarantined.
The safer approach is usually:
- Leave the suspicious copy quarantined.
- Remove the damaged HP software.
- Download the package for the exact printer from HP.
- Scan the installer with Windows Security.
- Reinstall the package.
If the file disappears again immediately after reinstalling, check Protection history before repeatedly copying it back. The detection may indicate a compromised installer or a different file that is loading the DLL.

Fix 3: Repair or update the HP printer driver
A driver can be present while its supporting runtime is missing. Reinstalling or updating the printer package is more useful than replacing the DLL manually.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use Windows Update
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if that section is available.
- Install an HP or DOT4-related printer driver that matches your device.
- Restart Windows.
Windows Update may restore a compatible DOT4 printer driver, but it may not restore HP scanning software or custom printer utilities. If the printer is multifunctional, use the complete HP package when Windows Update provides only a basic driver.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for an HP device, an unknown device, or a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected entry.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Note the device name, manufacturer, driver provider, and error code.
If the device is clearly obsolete:
- Right-click it.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct HP package.
Do not uninstall unrelated USB devices. If you are unsure, record the device name and hardware details before making a change.
When manually comparing several HP drivers, it is easy to choose an almost-correct package for the wrong model or Windows architecture. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention, while the full version performs the driver installation; it is optional, and the exact HP model-specific package remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 4: Remove stale HP software if you no longer use the printer
If the old printer has been replaced, restoring hphidr11.dll may be the wrong solution. A leftover HP service, scheduled task, startup entry, or printer driver may be trying to load the file at sign-in.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRemove the application
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for HP.
- Remove software belonging only to the obsolete printer.
- Restart Windows.
If the uninstaller asks whether to remove shared HP components, read the prompt carefully. Keep components used by another HP printer or scanner.
Remove the old printer queue
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the obsolete printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
Check startup applications
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an HP utility connected to the retired device.
- Select it and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a startup item prevents it from launching automatically, but it does not remove the underlying software. Uninstall the obsolete HP package as well.
If the message still appears, open Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Check Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time the popup appeared.
- Record the application name and failing module.
The application named in the event may be an HP utility rather than hphidr11.dll itself. Remove or reinstall that application instead of repairing Windows blindly.
Fix 5: Use DISM and SFC only for possible Windows corruption
hphidr11.dll belongs to HP software, so Windows repair commands are secondary. They can help if the error appeared with other Windows corruption symptoms, damaged system files, failed updates, or unusual servicing errors.

- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the prompt.
- Run:

Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows-protected files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some: review the CBS log or continue with the HP package repair.
- DISM cannot find source files or fails: the Windows component store may need another repair path, but this still does not prove that
hphidr11.dllis a Windows file.
If you repeatedly run SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed, the manual process can become guesswork. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the specific HP software remains the definitive fix for hphidr11.dll.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, cleanup operation, or Windows configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.

System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, and settings installed after the selected restore point. If the error remains afterward, install the correct HP package rather than repeating restoration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not copy hphidr11.dll manually
Avoid DLL download sites and isolated files shared through forums or file repositories. A replacement may be:
- the wrong version;
- the wrong architecture;
- modified or malicious;
- missing its dependent files;
- intended for a different HP printer package;
- unable to fix the damaged installer, service, or registry configuration.
Do not copy it into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, those directories are not interchangeable. Do not copy it beside an executable unless the original vendor installer specifically places it there.
A missing-DLL message can also mean that a dependency of hphidr11.dll is missing. In that case, adding this one file cannot repair the dependency chain.
Does regsvr32 fix this file
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. hphidr11.dll is a printer runtime and driver component, not normally a COM library that users should register manually.
Commands such as these are not the normal repair:
regsvr32 hphidr11.dll
regsvr32 /i hphidr11.dll
They may produce an error such as a missing entry point or an invalid module message. That result does not identify the real problem. Reinstall the complete HP package instead.
Frequently asked questions
Is hphidr11.dll part of Windows
No. It is associated with HP Dot4Rtl and the legacy HP DOT4 printer communication stack. It may have been installed into a Windows system directory by an HP package, but it is not a standard Microsoft Windows component.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET
Not as the first response. The file is an HP printer runtime, not a normal Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. Install the correct HP printer or scanner package first.
Which HP printer installed it
The filename alone does not identify one model. Older HP Photosmart, LaserJet, and other printer packages used related DOT4 components. Check installed HP software, printer properties, old installation media, and the executable named in the error.

Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit
Historical metadata identifies hphidr11.dll as a Win32, or 32-bit, DLL. That does not mean it should be copied into a particular Windows folder. Use the HP installer matching the printer and Windows architecture.
Why did the error appear after a Windows update
An update may leave an old HP startup component while removing, replacing, or disconnecting part of the printer package. The update may not be the direct cause. Reinstall the model-specific HP software and check whether the error comes from a stale startup entry.
The printer still works. Do I need the file
Not necessarily. If only an obsolete HP popup appears and you no longer use the related utility, remove the stale HP software and startup entry. Do not restore an unknown DLL merely to silence a message.
What if the error says “not designed to run on Windows”
That wording commonly indicates corruption, an incompatible legacy binary, or an architecture mismatch. Reinstall the correct HP package. It does not prove that a newer runtime from Microsoft is required.
What information should I provide if none of this works
Record the exact error wording, the executable named in the message, the HP printer model, the Windows edition and system type, whether the printer still works, and whether the problem began after quarantine, an update, cleanup, or uninstall. Those details identify whether the next step is driver repair, application removal, antivirus review, or Windows recovery.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePrevention
Keep the installer for the exact HP printer model in a known location, and avoid third-party DLL replacements when an official driver package is available. Before removing old HP software, confirm that another printer or scanner is not using it.
If a security product quarantines the file, review the detection and path before restoring anything. If the printer is retired, remove its software and driver cleanly instead of leaving a startup component that expects hphidr11.dll.
The correct outcome is not simply making the filename exist again. It is restoring the HP printer package that owns the file, or removing that obsolete package when the device is no longer needed.
