hpokm05.dll is a legacy Hewlett-Packard printer-software component described as HP Printing System for Windows. If hpokm05.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the complete HP printer package, not to download the DLL by itself.
The file is not known to be a Windows component, Microsoft runtime, Visual C++ file, DirectX file, or .NET component. Its exact printer-model association and original installation folder are not verified, so the filename alone cannot identify which HP program needs repair.
What hpokm05.dll does
Public file metadata associates hpokm05.dll with Hewlett-Packard Company and the HP Printing System for Windows. It appears to belong to older HP printer software, such as a printer monitor, status utility, setup program, or supporting component installed with an HP driver package.
That does not mean every HP printer uses this file. No authoritative HP page identifies a particular printer model that installs hpokm05.dll, and the exact parent installer is unknown.

Some public listings report a file size of roughly 28 KB. Reported versions and architectures conflict: some listings show version 2000.1109.0126 or x86, while others show 0.2.0.0 or x64. Treat those details as unverified rather than using them to choose a replacement download.
Common hpokm05.dll messages
You may see one of these messages:
The program can't start because hpokm05.dll is missing from your computer.hpokm05.dll was not found.Error loading hpokm05.dll. The specified module could not be found.Failed to load hpokm05.dll.The procedure entry point ... could not be located in hpokm05.dll.hpokm05.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
The wording helps identify the type of failure, but it does not prove that the DLL itself is the only missing file. A “module could not be found” message can also mean Windows found hpokm05.dll but could not find one of its dependencies.
Before changing anything, note:
- The exact application named in the dialog.
- Your HP printer’s exact model.
- Whether the printer still appears in Windows.
- Whether printing works despite the popup.
- The full error text and when it appears.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the matching HP package
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged hpokm05.dll. HP printer software often includes drivers, setup tools, scanning components, status utilities, and Printer Assistant software. Reinstalling the complete package restores the related files and dependencies together.
If the HP program offers Repair
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the HP program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the HP application or print a test page.
Not every traditional desktop program provides a Repair button. If it is absent, continue with a reinstall.
Remove the damaged HP software
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for entries beginning with HP, Hewlett-Packard, or the printer’s product name.
- Remove the printer utility or software package associated with the error.
- If Windows 10 is installed, use Apps > Apps & features instead.
- Restart the computer when prompted.
You can also use the older uninstall interface:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the relevant HP printer software.
- Choose Uninstall or Change.
- Follow the HP removal process and restart Windows.
Do not remove unrelated HP applications just because they share the HP name. If you are unsure, record the program names first and remove only the printer package associated with the error.
Install the official package
- Open HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page.
- Enter the exact printer model or serial number.
- Choose your Windows version and system architecture.
- Download the current available full-feature driver or printer software package.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Follow the connection instructions for USB, Wi-Fi, or network printing.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a Windows test page and then test the HP application.
Use the package for the exact printer model. Do not assume that a package for a similar-looking printer is compatible.
If the printer is old and HP does not provide a package for your Windows version, use the current HP software or the built-in Windows printer driver where supported. The old utility that requested hpokm05.dll may no longer be needed.
Fix 2: Check whether an old startup entry remains
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Sometimes the printer was removed correctly but an HP monitor or status utility was left in startup. Windows then tries to launch a program whose files are gone.

Check the application named by the error
- Read the error dialog carefully.
- Write down the application or path shown.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for that application or its HP parent program.
- Remove the obsolete program if the printer is no longer used.
- Restart Windows.
If the popup appears during sign-in but printing works, the problem is likely an obsolete startup reference rather than the active print driver.
Check startup applications
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an HP monitor, status tool, assistant, or printer utility.
- Right-click the entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a startup utility can remove the popup without affecting basic printing. Do not disable the Windows print service or remove a working printer driver merely because an old HP utility is broken.
For a persistent entry, check Task Scheduler:
- Press the Windows key and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open it as administrator.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for tasks clearly belonging to the removed HP printer software.
- Check the Actions tab before changing anything.
- Disable an obsolete HP task rather than deleting it immediately.
- Restart Windows and test.
If the popup disappears and the printer still works, the obsolete startup component was the cause.
Fix 3: Update or reinstall the printer driver
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A driver update, migration to a newer Windows installation, or incorrect package architecture can leave an old HP utility unable to load its supporting files.

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers if the printer uses USB.
- Right-click the affected HP printer.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the model-specific package from HP.
- Install it with the printer disconnected if the installer requests this.
- Reconnect the printer only when instructed.
- Print a test page.
If the printer is not listed, select View > Show hidden devices in Device Manager. Remove only stale entries that clearly belong to the affected HP printer. Avoid deleting unrelated Microsoft, USB, or network devices.
Select the package matching Windows and the computer’s architecture. On most current Windows installations, this means x64, but the conflicting public listings for hpokm05.dll do not establish which architecture the original HP package used. The installer supplied for your printer and Windows version is the authority.
When manually checking the system type:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Read System type.
- Choose the corresponding driver package when HP provides separate choices.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show outdated drivers in its free scan, while driver installation and repair require the full version. It can reduce the work of hunting through hardware entries, but reinstalling the correct HP printer package remains the definitive fix for an HP-specific DLL.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine an old printer component, or it may correctly block a malicious file using the same name. Do not restore hpokm05.dll automatically.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open the Start menu.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open any item related to
hpokm05.dllor the HP printer software. - Record the detected path, detection name, and action taken.
- Run a full scan.
- Check the file’s location and digital signature if a copy remains.
Only restore or allow the file after confirming that it came from the official HP installer, is located in the expected application directory, and has a valid Hewlett-Packard or HP signature. If those checks fail, leave it quarantined and reinstall the printer package from HP.

Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again unless it is deliberately allowed. A clean reinstall is safer than extracting a quarantined DLL and copying it elsewhere.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus restart time
Use these tools when other Windows files are also failing, Windows features are damaged, or the HP installer itself will not run. They do not normally restore hpokm05.dll, because that file is associated with third-party HP software rather than protected Windows resources.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the HP installer or repair process.
Run DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows resources.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test again. If both commands report no integrity violations but hpokm05.dll is still missing, return to the HP package reinstall. Repeating SFC will not replace an HP-owned DLL.
If the manual process leaves you repeatedly guessing which Windows component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show repair findings through its free scan, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional and does not replace reinstalling the HP program that owns hpokm05.dll.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver update, HP software removal, cleanup operation, or major Windows change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Select Finish and confirm.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore affects system files, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. After the restore completes, test the printer. If the error returns after a driver update, reinstall the correct HP package rather than repeatedly restoring the system.

Fix 7: Check for a missing dependency
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A DLL error does not always mean that the named file is the real problem. Windows may find hpokm05.dll but fail to load it because another library is missing, incompatible, or blocked.
Check these details:
- Right-click the application named in the error.
- Select Open file location, if available.
- Note the folder containing the HP program.
- Right-click
hpokm05.dllif it exists. - Select Properties.
- Record the Location, Details, and Digital Signatures information.
- Compare the file’s location with the HP software installation folder.
Do not copy a replacement into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The original directory is not verified, and placing a third-party DLL in a Windows system directory can create conflicts.

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributables merely because a DLL is missing. There is no evidence that these general runtimes are the correct repair for hpokm05.dll. Install a runtime only when the HP installer or a clearly identified error specifically requires it.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is not a generic missing-DLL installer. It is used for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly in certain COM or ActiveX components.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere is no verified evidence that hpokm05.dll is a self-registering component. Running commands such as these is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 hpokm05.dll
or:
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32hpokm05.dll
They can produce misleading errors and do not restore missing dependencies. Use the HP installer instead.

| Antivirus quarantine | Inspect Protection History and reinstall from HP |
| Wrong driver package | Install the package matching the printer and Windows architecture |
| Missing dependency | Reinstall the complete HP package rather than one DLL |

| Recent driver or software change | Use System Restore or reinstall the previous working package |
| Suspicious copy in an unexpected folder | Scan it and verify its signature before taking action |
Do not download hpokm05.dll separately
Random DLL download sites are a poor repair path for this file. The download may contain malware, use the wrong version, target the wrong architecture, lack the required dependencies, or simply fail because the parent HP program is damaged.
Public listings also disagree about the file’s version and architecture. That is another reason not to select a replacement based on a filename, reported bitness, or a search result.
The safe source is the official HP driver and software page for the exact printer model. If HP no longer supplies a compatible package, use a supported built-in Windows printer driver or current HP software rather than forcing an unverified legacy DLL into a system directory.

FAQ
Is hpokm05.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is identified as an HP Printing System for Windows component, not an inbox Windows DLL or Microsoft runtime.
Which HP printer uses hpokm05.dll?
The exact printer model has not been verified. The filename alone cannot identify the parent printer package.
Should I copy hpokm05.dll into System32?
No. Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64 as a default fix. Reinstall the official HP package instead.
Should I run regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose registration functions, and there is no verified evidence that this file requires registration.
Is hpokm05.dll malware?
A missing file does not prove malware. However, an unexpected copy in a strange directory should be scanned and checked for a valid digital signature before it is trusted.
What if the printer still works?
Remove or disable the obsolete HP utility that is requesting the file. Avoid disturbing a functioning print driver unless the printer itself has stopped working.
Will SFC restore hpokm05.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows resources, while hpokm05.dll belongs to third-party HP software. Use SFC for broader Windows corruption, then reinstall the HP package.
Is a 32-bit or 64-bit replacement required?
The public metadata is contradictory, reporting both x86 and x64. Do not choose a standalone file based on those reports. Use the HP installer that matches your printer and Windows installation.
