myquotes.dll is not a verified Windows system file. If Windows reports that myquotes.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to identify the application requesting it and restore that application’s original files.
The strongest identifiable match is MyQuotes, an old ASP.NET Web Forms sample from Applied Microsoft .NET Framework Programming in Visual Basic .NET. Its MyQuotes.dll contained a generated SOAP web-service proxy used to retrieve delayed stock quotes. It was an application-private assembly stored in the web application’s bin folder, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Fix 1: Identify the application requesting myquotes.dll
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. First determine which program, website, startup entry, or scheduled task is asking for the file.
Check the full error message
Write down:
- The complete error text
- The executable, service, or website named in the message
- The path shown for
myquotes.dll - Whether the error occurs during startup, when launching a program, or when opening a website
- What changed immediately beforehand
The wording matters. “The program can’t start because myquotes.dll is missing” usually points to an application launch. “The specified module could not be found” can refer to the named DLL or to a dependency that the application needs.

Check recent changes
Think through whether you recently:
- Moved or partially copied an application
- Restored the application from backup
- Published an ASP.NET site without its
binfolder - Ran a cleanup utility
- Reinstalled or upgraded the application
- Saw antivirus quarantine a file
- Changed an IIS site or application path
- Removed an old development project
If the error appears at Windows startup and no program is visible, inspect startup entries:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry that references the affected application or an old development tool.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and select Open file location, if available.
- Record the program path before changing or disabling anything.
Also check scheduled tasks:
- Press Windows + S.
- Search for Task Scheduler and open it.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that launch from the same folder as the error.
- Open a task’s Actions tab to see which executable or script starts it.
Do not assume that an unexplained startup error means Windows itself requires myquotes.dll.
Fix 2: Restore the complete application deployment
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
For an ordinary application, the definitive repair is to use the developer’s original installer or repair function. For a legacy ASP.NET site, redeploy the entire application rather than copying only one file.
Repair an installed desktop application
If you have identified the program:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If there is no Repair option, use the application’s original installer. Choose Repair when offered. If repair is unavailable, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from a trusted installer supplied by the developer or your organization’s software archive.

Restore an ASP.NET application
If the error occurs on a website hosted by IIS, locate the site’s application root. The historical MyQuotes sample expected its compiled assembly under a path like:
C:pathtoapplicationbinMyQuotes.dll
The folder might instead be a web root such as:
C:inetpubwwwrootMyQuotesbinMyQuotes.dll
To check the IIS path:
- Press Windows + S.
- Search for IIS.
- Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
- Expand the computer name.
- Select Sites.
- Select the affected site.
- In the Actions pane, choose Basic Settings.
- Note the Physical path.
- Open that path in File Explorer.
- Confirm that a
binfolder exists and contains the application’s compiled assemblies.
If MyQuotes.dll is absent, restore the complete application root from:
- The original deployment archive
- A source-controlled build
- A known-good backup
- The original sample source and build process
- Your organization’s verified release package
Do not copy a same-named file from another computer. A DLL with the right filename can still be the wrong assembly or an altered file.

After restoring the site:
- Confirm that the IIS site points to the correct physical path.
- Confirm that the application pool uses the framework settings required by the application.
- Recycle the application pool.
- Open the site again.
- Check the Windows Event Viewer and IIS logs if the error remains.
A restored DLL may remove the loading error while the old stock-quote web service remains unavailable. The historical sample depended on an external delayed-quote service, so restoring the assembly does not guarantee that the sample can still retrieve data.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and file permissions
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may have removed or quarantined the file. Restore it only if you can verify that it came from the trusted application deployment.
Check Windows Security
- Press Windows + S.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand a detection that names the affected application or
MyQuotes.dll. - Confirm the original file path and detection details.
Do not choose Allow on device merely because the filename is familiar. If the file came from an unknown download, leave it quarantined. Obtain a clean copy from the original installer, source project, or backup instead.
After redeploying the verified application:
- Run Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan if you suspect broader tampering.
- Save open work and start the scan.
Also verify permissions on the application folder:
- Right-click the application root.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Security tab.
- Confirm that the account running the application has read and execute access.
- For IIS, confirm that the application pool identity can read the site files.
Do not grant Full control to Everyone as a workaround.
Fix 4: Rebuild the historical MyQuotes assembly
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
This step applies only if you are maintaining the old ASP.NET sample or have its source code. The historical assembly was generated from MyQuotes.cs with Microsoft’s Wsdl.exe tool and used a generated SOAP proxy named netxmethodsservicesstockquoteStockQuoteService.
Restore the complete source project first. Then:
- Confirm that the project targets the .NET Framework version it was written for.
- Confirm that the generated source file is present.
- Confirm that the web-service reference and configuration are present.
- Generate or restore the proxy source using the project’s documented build process.
- Build the project in its original development environment.
- Confirm that the output is named
MyQuotes.dll. - Copy the verified build output into the application’s
bindirectory. - Recycle the IIS application pool.
- Test the site and review the full exception if it still fails.
Microsoft’s documentation for the SoapHttpClientProtocol class explains the managed proxy pattern used by older .NET Web Services applications. A modern rebuild may require changes to the project, framework, configuration, or unavailable service endpoint.
Do not rename an unrelated assembly to MyQuotes.dll. The filename alone does not make it a compatible replacement.
Fix 5: Repair or install the required .NET Framework
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus restart time
Reinstalling .NET Framework does not recreate an application-specific MyQuotes.dll. Use this fix when the error is accompanied by other .NET Framework failures, missing framework classes, or an application-startup message that identifies the framework installation.

- In Windows Features, check whether the application requires .NET Framework 3.5, including older components.
- Enable only the framework feature required by the application.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
Do not enable random features solely because a DLL is missing.
For supported legacy applications, use Microsoft’s official .NET Framework 4.8.1 download page. Choose the Runtime or offline installer according to the application’s deployment requirements.
If .NET reports that an application cannot start, follow Microsoft’s .NET Framework repair guidance. Repair the framework, restart Windows, and then test the application again.
Hunting through framework versions and repeating repair commands without knowing what changed can make diagnosis difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for an application-private DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
If the same myquotes.dll error remains after a successful framework repair, return to the application deployment. The framework does not normally generate this file.
Fix 6: Check dependencies and the complete loader error
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
A message saying that the specified module could not be found does not always mean that myquotes.dll itself is absent. The DLL may be present while another assembly or native dependency is missing.
Check the application’s:
- Full exception details
- Application configuration file
- Assembly binding information
- IIS and Windows Event Viewer logs
- Deployment logs
- File permissions
- Referenced assemblies
- Application pool settings
For a .NET Framework application, an assembly binding failure may name the missing dependency in the exception. Restore that dependency from the same verified application package rather than downloading a similarly named DLL.
If the error names a native runtime or a driver dependency, use the dependency’s official installer. Do not infer that a missing dependency belongs in System32.
Fix 7: Update a driver only when the diagnostic identifies one
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
There is no verified evidence that myquotes.dll is a graphics, audio, printer, storage, or other Windows driver file. Driver work is appropriate only when Device Manager, the application vendor, or the full loader error separately identifies a damaged driver dependency.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the reported device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a recent failed update:
- Open the device’s Properties.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart and test again.
Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page when Windows cannot locate the required driver. Verify the exact device model and Windows architecture before installing anything.
Guessing which of many installed drivers is stale is inefficient. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it is not a substitute for restoring the application that owns myquotes.dll.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
Use Windows component repair when several Windows features are failing or system files are damaged. These commands repair Windows servicing files and protected system files; they do not normally reconstruct an application-private MyQuotes.dll.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows + S.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.

- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, review the result in the CBS log and continue with application-specific repair rather than copying a DLL into a system directory.
Microsoft documents these DISM and SFC repair commands.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not copy myquotes.dll into System32 or SysWOW64
System32 and SysWOW64 are Windows system locations, not general storage folders for application DLLs. The historical MyQuotes assembly belongs in the web application’s bin directory.
A 64-bit Windows installation does not mean that you should copy the file into both folders. The historical DLL is a managed .NET assembly, and the usual 32-bit versus 64-bit system-DLL advice does not establish a valid repair.
There is also no verified public publisher, checksum, release history, architecture, or authoritative Microsoft package for the historical file. Generic download-page metadata, including a repeated version or size, does not prove that a file is authentic or compatible.
regsvr32 normally does not apply
regsvr32 registers compatible COM DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for repairing every missing DLL.

Running:
regsvr32 MyQuotes.dll
against a managed application assembly may produce an entry-point error and will not recreate missing application references. Use it only when the software’s official documentation explicitly says that the particular DLL is a self-registering COM component. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes its intended use.

FAQ
Is myquotes.dll a Windows file?
No verified evidence supports that conclusion. The strongest identifiable match is an application-private assembly from the legacy MyQuotes ASP.NET sample.
Where should MyQuotes.dll be located?
In the application’s bin directory, under the web application root. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Will reinstalling .NET Framework recreate it?
No. .NET Framework supplies framework components and Web Services classes. It does not recreate an application-specific generated assembly.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
No trustworthy public specification establishes its architecture. Because it is a managed assembly generated for an application, copying it into both Windows system folders is not an appropriate architecture fix.
Can I download a replacement DLL?
Avoid random DLL download sites. The file may be malicious, altered, unrelated, or incompatible, and replacing it may conceal the real deployment problem. Use the original application’s installer, source build, verified deployment archive, or backup.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
The message may identify a missing dependency rather than myquotes.dll itself. Inspect the complete exception, application logs, binding information, and deployment files.
Will restoring the DLL make the old stock-quote sample work?
It may resolve the assembly-loading error, but the sample depended on an external delayed-stock-quote service whose availability is not guaranteed.
What information should I collect if the error continues?
Record the requesting executable or IIS site, full error text, file path, recent system change, application version if known, and whether the DLL came from a trusted deployment. Those details determine whether the next step is redeployment, dependency repair, framework repair, or investigation of a startup task.
