If Windows reports that hpontu05.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or is corrupted, the problem usually belongs to an old HP printer-driver installation rather than Windows itself. The safest repair is to identify the affected printer, remove the incomplete HP package, and install a compatible driver for that exact model.

- You have an ARM-based Windows PC or a newer Windows 10/11 installation: add the printer through Windows Settings before attempting an old manufacturer installer.
Do not begin by downloading hpontu05.dll from a DLL-sharing site.
What hpontu05.dll is
hpontu05.dll is a legacy Hewlett-Packard printer-driver component associated with HP Printing System for Windows and HP DeskJet Printing System for Windows. It is not generally a Windows component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET file.

Historical public metadata identifies it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL, commonly reported as version 2000.1109.126.0 and approximately 174 KB. Those values describe reported legacy metadata, not a specification that every copy must match.
An older system inventory placed the file here:
C:WindowsSystem32spoolDRIVERSW32X863
That location is significant. Windows printer drivers contain multiple components, including rendering and configuration files. The Print Spooler loads the components registered for a printer, so a printer DLL may appear under a spooler driver directory rather than inside an application’s folder.
The available public records do not identify one specific HP printer model that installed this file. The exact model, Windows version, and original driver package must therefore be established from the affected computer.

Common triggers include:
- An incomplete or damaged HP driver installation. This is the most likely cause.
- An HP printer or its software was removed incompletely.
- A Windows upgrade left an old 32-bit driver incompatible with the current system.
- Antivirus software quarantined or removed one driver component.
- The print-driver store or spooler configuration became damaged.
- A disk cleanup or old system-image restore removed files while leaving printer references behind.
- A missing dependency is being reported as a missing module.
- Broader Windows component corruption, which is less likely when only printing is affected.
The message may appear when you print, open printer properties, start the Print Spooler, or launch HP printer software. It does not necessarily indicate a Windows startup problem.
Fix 1: Identify the printer and remove the broken package
First record the printer model before changing anything.

- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Record the exact printer name and model.
- Select the affected printer and choose Remove if it is still listed.
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if it is connected.
Now remove the associated HP software:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Search for HP printer software, HP DeskJet software, or an HP setup package.
- Select it, choose the menu button, and click Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting, check whether the old printer device remains:
- Press
Windowskey, type Control Panel, and open it. - Select View devices and printers.
- If the old printer remains, right-click it and choose Remove device.
If the error disappears after this process, the remaining problem was a stale HP printer reference. The next step is to install a supported driver rather than copy the old DLL back.
Fix 2: Install the correct HP or Windows driver
Use the exact printer model when searching HP’s official support site or 123.hp.com. Select the driver intended for your Windows version and system architecture. Do not assume that a package for a similar DeskJet model will work.
If HP does not provide a current package:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Choose Add device.
- Wait for Windows to detect the printer.
- Follow the prompts to install the available driver.
Windows Update or an inbox printer driver may restore basic printing even when the original HP software is obsolete. Some advanced functions, such as scanning utilities or special status controls, may not be available with a generic driver.
A historical 32-bit hpontu05.dll should not be copied into both System32 and SysWOW64. Those directories have architecture-specific purposes, and placing a DLL in a system folder does not register it as a valid printer driver. A current, complete driver package is the correct replacement.

If the problem started after a security scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the printer stopped working.
- Expand any entry involving the HP printer software.
- Record the file path and detection name.
Do not restore a DLL solely because its filename looks familiar. Confirm that the path belongs to the legitimate HP driver installation and that the security product identifies the item as safe or as a false positive.
Even when the file was removed incorrectly, reinstalling the complete HP package is safer than restoring one DLL manually. If the security product blocks the installer again, resolve that detection with the security vendor before continuing.
Fix 4: Restart the Print Spooler and clear stale printer state
A damaged spooler state can keep Windows trying to load an obsolete driver.
- Press
Windowskey, type Services, and open the Services app. - Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
- Try printing again.
If restarting does not help, stop the spooler temporarily:
- Right-click Print Spooler and select Stop.
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
%WINDIR%System32spoolPRINTERS
- Delete only the files inside that folder, not the folder itself.
- Return to Services.
- Right-click Print Spooler and select Start.
- Reinstall the printer from HP or Windows Settings.
If Windows refuses to remove the old driver, use the printer server properties:

Windowskey, type Control Panel, and open it. - Select Devices and Printers.
- Click any printer once.
- Select Print server properties from the toolbar.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the obsolete HP driver.
- Click Remove and choose Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the supported driver again.
Only remove a driver when you have confirmed that no other working printer depends on it.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when other symptoms exist
hpontu05.dll is not normally protected as a Windows system file. SFC will not recreate a missing HP driver package. Use Windows repair commands when other Windows components are failing, system files are damaged, or updates and services are malfunctioning.
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Press
Windowskey. - Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the HP printer driver if the DLL error remains.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair Windows components; they do not supply an obsolete third-party HP file.

Fix 6: Use System Restore only after driver repair fails
If printing worked before a recent driver installation, update, or cleanup, System Restore may help.
- Press
Windowskey. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Open the System Restore wizard.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Click Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Continue only if the restore point is appropriate.
- Finish the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can reverse driver and software changes, but it is not a substitute for installing a supported printer package.

Why regsvr32 usually will not help
Do not run:
regsvr32 hpontu05.dll
merely because a website recommends it. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the required self-registration entry points. Printer rendering and configuration components are normally installed and referenced by the printer-driver package and loaded by the Print Spooler.

It usually means registration is not the correct operation for that file.
Avoid standalone DLL downloads
Downloading hpontu05.dll from a random DLL site can provide the wrong version, architecture, or file provenance. It may also introduce malware or leave the real problem untouched, such as a missing dependency, stale driver registration, or incompatible printer package.
Do not copy the file into System32, SysWOW64, or the spooler directory manually. Obtain the complete driver from HP’s official support process, 123.hp.com, or Windows Update.
If the error remains
Collect these details before escalating:
- The exact error text.
- The full path shown in the message.
- The printer’s exact model.
- Your Windows edition, version, and build.
- Whether the failure occurs during printing, printer setup, or Windows startup.
- Whether the file exists anywhere under the printer-driver folders.
- Any relevant Print Spooler or Event Viewer error.
- Whether antivirus protection history lists the file.
- Whether the problem affects one printer or every printer.
A persistent error after reinstalling usually indicates a mismatched or stale driver package, an unavailable dependency, or an old driver that is incompatible with the current Windows architecture. It is less likely to require a Visual C++ runtime or a manually registered DLL.

Keep the printer model and current driver source recorded for each Windows machine. Before removing an HP printer, uninstall its software and remove the printer device. After major Windows upgrades, replace legacy drivers with the current HP package or the Windows-provided driver instead of restoring individual files.
For older DeskJet hardware, the best long-term result may be a basic Windows printer driver rather than the original HP software. If the printer works through that driver, hpontu05.dll is no longer needed.
