hpv850al.dll is a legacy Hewlett-Packard DeskJet printer-driver component, not a normal Windows runtime file. The safest fix is to identify the HP printer that owns it, remove the damaged or obsolete installation, and reinstall a compatible driver through Windows Update or HP’s official support page.
What this file actually does
The file is described as Windows Unidrv Plugin and is associated with Hewlett-Packard Company DeskJet software. Microsoft describes Unidrv as a printer-driver architecture that uses printer-specific plug-ins and rendering components to produce output for a particular printer.

That means hpv850al.dll is not normally repaired like a missing Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. It belongs to a larger printer package that may also contain configuration files, printer-description files, resources, and components for a particular Windows architecture.

Historical driver listings place the file in an i386 printer-driver cache and identify it as a legacy 32-bit component. That is useful evidence about its origin, but it does not prove that every copy has the same size, version, hash, or installation path.

The correct repair depends on whether the printer is still needed.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears when printing | Damaged or incomplete HP driver | Remove and reinstall the printer |
| It appears at Windows sign-in | A stale HP startup or print-monitor entry | Remove the obsolete HP software and printer |
| It began after a Windows upgrade | Legacy driver incompatibility | Install a compatible driver or use an inbox driver |
| Defender reports the file | Quarantine or possible malware | Check Protection History and avoid restoring blindly |
| The printer was already discarded | Leftover printer package | Uninstall the old printer and software |
| Other Windows features also fail | Possible component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Only one Windows account has the problem | Per-user printer configuration | Test another account and recreate the printer |
regsvr32 reports a missing entry point |
The DLL is not self-registering | Do not force registration; repair the driver package |
Before changing anything, note the exact wording, when it appears, and whether the old HP printer is still connected or needed.
Fix 1: Identify the printer and remove the broken installation
Start with the repair that addresses the most likely cause: an incomplete or obsolete HP printer installation.
Find the printer model
Check the label on the printer, its front panel, or any existing printer entry in Windows. If Windows still lists it:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Review the installed printers.
- Select the HP printer and note its full model name.
If the error names no printer and the HP device no longer exists, the best fix may simply be to remove the stale software rather than restore hpv850al.dll.
Remove the printer
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the old HP printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting, try the action that produced the error. If the message has disappeared and you no longer need the printer, the repair is complete.
If the printer is still needed, continue with a clean reinstall.
Remove old HP software
Some older HP installations include a utility, print monitor, or control panel separate from the printer entry.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for HP printer software, DeskJet software, or an HP printer utility associated with the old device.
- Select the relevant entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
Do not remove unrelated HP software unless you know it belongs to the printer. If an uninstall entry is missing, continue with the Windows printer removal and reinstall the driver instead of deleting random files from Windows folders.
Fix 2: Reinstall the printer through Windows Update
Windows Update is the preferred starting point for a current printer driver.

- Connect the printer by USB or make sure it is on the same network as the computer.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches for printers.
- Select the HP printer when it appears.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Print a test page from the printer’s settings page.
If Windows does not find the printer:
- Confirm that the printer is powered on.
- Check the USB cable or wireless connection.
- Select Add manually in the printer search window.
- Choose the method that matches the printer, such as a network address or local printer connection.
- Allow Windows Update to search for available drivers if that option appears.
- Complete the installation.
- Open the printer’s settings and print a test page.
A successful test page proves that the active driver can communicate with the printer. It also means the old hpv850al.dll reference is no longer blocking normal printing.
When Windows offers several drivers, select one explicitly compatible with your Windows edition and printer model. Do not select a random legacy package merely because its folder contains a file with the expected name.
Manually hunting through old driver versions can be tedious, particularly when several HP packages remain installed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and identify available driver updates; its free scan shows what it found, while repair or driver installation requires the full version. Reinstalling the exact HP printer package remains the definitive fix when this specific legacy component is involved.
Fix 3: Use the exact HP model page
If Windows Update does not provide a suitable driver, use HP’s official printer-driver portal.
- Open HP’s official printer driver page.
- Enter the exact DeskJet model.
- Select the matching printer from the results.
- Confirm that the download supports your version of Windows.
- Download the complete driver or software package.
- If an older package is offered, read its compatibility information before installing it.
- Run the installer.
- Follow the connection instructions.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Print a test page.
Do not search HP’s site only for hpv850al.dll. The file is one component of a driver package, and HP may provide a newer package that uses different components or does not include this legacy file.

An inbox driver is supplied through Windows and may support basic printing without reproducing every feature of the original HP software.
To try an available Windows driver manually:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose Add device.
- Select Add manually.
- Choose the local or network installation method.
- Select Windows Update in the manufacturer and model list if available.
- Choose the closest exact model or a compatible driver identified for the printer.
- Finish the installation.
- Print a test page.
If basic printing works with the inbox driver, the old HP plug-in may no longer be necessary.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A historical i386 location points to a 32-bit driver origin. Modern Windows installations are commonly 64-bit, and a 32-bit driver component cannot be made compatible by copying it into System32 or SysWOW64.
Check your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
Then check the printer driver:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Open Printer properties or Related settings.
- Review the Advanced tab for the driver name.
- Compare that driver with the architecture and Windows support information on Microsoft’s or HP’s download page.
If an old 32-bit driver is installed on a newer 64-bit system, remove it and install a compatible driver. If no compatible driver exists, use a Windows inbox driver or consider replacing unsupported hardware.

Do not use a standalone 32-bit copy of hpv850al.dll to bypass an architecture mismatch. The driver may require matching files and a compatible print subsystem.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate old driver component, but a filename alone does not establish that a file is safe.

- Find the event involving
hpv850al.dll. - Expand it and record the original file path, detection name, and action taken.
A file located inside an HP printer-driver directory is more consistent with the expected role than a file in an unrelated application folder. Even so, confirm the file’s digital signature and scan result before considering restoration.
The safer response is usually to remove the printer and reinstall the complete driver from Windows Update or HP. This replaces the package as a unit and avoids restoring an isolated DLL with unknown dependencies.
If the file is outside an HP printer-driver directory, is unsigned, or is detected again after reinstalling the official package, leave it quarantined and run a full Windows Security scan. Do not add an entire folder to antivirus exclusions just to suppress the message.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows component corruption
hpv850al.dll appears to be an HP printer component rather than a protected Windows core file. SFC and DISM therefore should not be your first repair for an isolated printer error.
Use them when other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or system files were affected by an interrupted upgrade.

- Restart Windows.
Run SFC second
Open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary and enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the printer.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that the operation completed and other Windows behavior improves. Neither command is guaranteed to restore hpv850al.dll, because the file may not be part of the protected Windows component store.
Repeatedly running these commands will not substitute for reinstalling the HP driver.

For this printer-specific file, reinstalling the complete official HP package remains the definitive repair.
Fix 7: Roll back a recent driver or Windows change
If printing worked until a driver or Windows update, reverse that change instead of replacing the DLL manually.
Roll back the printer driver
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Right-click the HP printer.
- Select Printer properties.
- Open the Advanced tab.
- Note the driver name and available options.
- If a previous driver is available through Windows or the HP installer, remove the current package and install the known-good version.
- Restart Windows.
- Print a test page.
The exact rollback controls vary by driver package. If no rollback option is available, reinstall the previous compatible package from the official HP source if HP provides one.
Use System Restore
Use System Restore only when the problem began after a clear system change and a restore point exists.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this file
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A printer rendering or interface plug-in is not necessarily a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL.
Running this command is therefore generally inappropriate:
regsvr32 hpv850al.dll
It may produce an “entry point not found” message, or it may register something without repairing the printer package. It does not install the matching configuration, resource, printer-description, or architecture files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse regsvr32 only when the official software documentation specifically tells you to register that exact DLL. For a missing hpv850al.dll error, repair the printer installation instead.
Do not download a loose DLL
Avoid DLL mirror sites, file-recovery utilities that supply individual DLLs, and instructions telling you to copy hpv850al.dll into System32.
A loose download can be malicious, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, unsigned, or missing the other files required by the printer driver. It can also hide the actual problem: a stale printer queue, an incompatible driver, or an incomplete HP installation.

Manual extraction is reasonable only in controlled enterprise or forensic recovery, where the exact signed file is taken from the matching official driver package.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Work through this final checklist:
- Confirm that the printer model is correct.
- Remove duplicate HP printer entries.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the compatible driver as an administrator.
- Check whether another Windows account can print.
- Remove old HP printer software that still references a discarded device.
- Check Windows Security Protection History again.
- Test an inbox Windows driver.
- Review the printer’s driver name under Printer properties > Advanced.
- Use System Restore only if the failure clearly follows a recent system change.
If the printer is unsupported and no compatible driver exists, removing the old HP package is the correct resolution. Restoring hpv850al.dll is unnecessary when no application or printer still needs it.
FAQ
Is hpv850al.dll part of Windows?
It is associated with an old Hewlett-Packard DeskJet printer driver and is described as a Windows Unidrv Plugin. It should not be treated as a standard Windows runtime DLL.
Which HP DeskJet model uses it?
The available historical evidence associates it with Hewlett-Packard DeskJet software but does not establish one universal printer model. Identify the printer connected to your installation before selecting a replacement driver.
Can I copy it to System32?
No. Copying a single DLL does not repair the driver package and can create an architecture mismatch. Reinstall the complete compatible driver.
Will regsvr32 repair it?
Usually not. Printer-driver plug-ins are not necessarily self-registering DLLs, so registration is not a general repair method.
What if the printer no longer exists?
Remove the old printer and associated HP software. A startup error caused by a stale print monitor should disappear once the obsolete installation is removed.
Should I run SFC?
Run DISM followed by SFC when other Windows components are malfunctioning or system corruption is suspected. Do not expect SFC to restore an HP-specific driver file.
How can I tell whether a copy is legitimate?
Check its original path, digital signature, association with an installed HP printer, antivirus history, and whether it came from a complete official driver package. The filename by itself proves nothing.
Why did the message appear after upgrading Windows?
A legacy printer driver may no longer match the current Windows release or system architecture. Remove the old package and install a compatible driver, use an inbox driver, or retire the unsupported printer.
