hpvscp50.dll is an old Hewlett-Packard printer-driver component, not a general Windows runtime. If Windows says hpvscp50.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the affected HP DeskJet printer package instead of downloading the DLL by itself.
The file is described as Windows Unidrv Plugin and historically appeared in HP DeskJet driver packages alongside files such as hpvimg50.dll, hpvud50.dll, and hpvui50.dll. It is associated particularly with older DeskJet printers, including the 710C and 720C families. The error commonly means that an old printer queue, setup program, or print component is pointing to an incomplete or incompatible driver package.

hpvscp50.dll: quick identification
| Item | Verified identification |
|---|---|
| File | hpvscp50.dll |
| Description | Windows Unidrv Plugin |
| Publisher | Hewlett-Packard Company |
| Software association | HP DeskJet printer software and drivers |
| Typical role | Printer-driver plug-in used with Windows Unidrv |
| Modern status | Historical component, not a current general Windows DLL |
| Architecture | Associated with older 32-bit Windows-era printer packages; support varies by printer and Windows version |
| Common trigger | Damaged, removed, stale, or incompatible HP printer driver |
The historical component dates from an older Windows driver ecosystem. Its presence on a modern Windows installation does not mean that Windows 10 or Windows 11 natively requires it. HP lists some older models, including the DeskJet 710C and 720C, with a Windows in-OS driver on Windows 10, but not every legacy HP printer has complete support on current Windows releases.

Printer setup or printing error
If the message appears while adding an HP printer, opening its properties, printing, or starting the Print Spooler, treat it as a printer-driver problem. This is the most likely situation.
Typical messages include:
- “The program can’t start because hpvscp50.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “hpvscp50.dll was not found.”
- “hpvscp50.dll could not be loaded.”
- “The specified module hpvscp50.dll could not be found.”
- “hpvscp50.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
Error from an old HP installer
An installation CD or archived HP setup program may request the file before it can finish. Old installers often expect files and Windows components that are no longer handled the same way on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
In this case, cancel the old installer and use Windows’ printer installation path or HP’s current support workflow for the exact model.
Error from an unrelated application
If the error appears when launching a game or unrelated program and no HP printer software is installed, the message may be a stale reference left by an old installer, startup entry, or scheduled task. Do not assume that copying hpvscp50.dll into the application folder is safe.
Record the application name shown in the dialog, check its startup configuration, and remove or reinstall that application if it is the actual source.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the HP printer
This is the safest first repair because it restores the complete driver package, its dependencies, queue configuration, permissions, and driver-store registration.
Remove the existing printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer associated with the error.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows if the printer or driver appears to remain in use.
If several copies of the same printer are listed, remove obsolete copies as well. A stale queue can continue pointing to an old driver even after a new printer is added.
Recommended Free Tools
Add the printer again
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to search.
- Select the HP printer if it appears.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- If it is not detected, select Add manually.
- Choose the appropriate connection method.
- Select the printer manufacturer and model.
- If offered, choose Windows Update to refresh the available printer list.
- Complete the installation.
- Select the printer, open Printer properties, and choose Print Test Page.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update first for printer-driver installation and provides separate guidance for removing and adding printers. Windows installs printer packages through its driver store rather than treating every driver DLL as a standalone system file.
If automatic detection fails, check the physical connection, USB cable, network connection, and printer power. For a very old USB printer, connect it directly to the computer rather than through a hub while testing.
Remove an old driver package if the error returns
If reinstalling the queue does not help, remove the obsolete driver from the print-server list.

Do not remove unrelated drivers. If Windows reports that the driver is in use, close printer software and restart the Print Spooler service before trying again.
To restart the spooler:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Try the driver removal or printer installation again.
A successful repair should let you open the printer properties and print a test page without the hpvscp50.dll message.
When Windows Update leaves you hunting through old model names and driver entries, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. For this specific file, reinstalling the complete HP printer package remains the definitive repair.
Fix 2: Use the Windows in-OS driver for a legacy DeskJet
Some older HP printers work through a driver already included with Windows rather than through a modern downloadable HP package. The DeskJet 710C and 720C are important examples: HP lists them with a Windows in-OS driver on Windows 10.
Try the built-in driver instead of forcing an old installation CD to run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Select Add manually when automatic discovery fails.
- Choose the option for adding a local printer or a network printer with manual settings.
- Select the correct port, such as the connected USB port.
- At the manufacturer list, choose HP.
- Select the matching DeskJet model if it is available.
- If the model is not listed, select Windows Update and wait for the list to refresh.
- Choose the closest exact model offered by Windows.
- Finish the wizard.
- Print a test page.
The exact choices can vary with the connection type and Windows build. Do not select a similarly named model merely because it appears first. If Windows offers no compatible driver, the printer may not be fully supported on that release.
For the DeskJet 710C or 720C, use the model-specific setup instructions from HP’s official support site when Windows does not detect the printer automatically. Prefer the current Windows built-in-driver route over an old CD when both are available.
Fix 3: Update Windows and the printer driver
A Windows upgrade can leave an old printer queue in place while changing the driver files or compatibility rules beneath it. Reconnecting the printer, restoring an old backup, or reinstalling a printer can produce the same mismatch.
Install pending Windows updates before repeating the printer setup.

- Select Optional updates if the section is available.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a relevant printer driver.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove and add the HP printer again.
Windows Update may not provide a driver for every legacy model. If it does not, search HP’s official support site by the exact printer model, not merely by hpvscp50.dll. A model-specific support page may direct you to an in-OS driver instead of offering an old executable.
A driver package is more than one DLL. It can include an INF installation file, catalog and signing information, configuration files, language resources, dependencies, and queue settings. That is why installing the complete package is safer than replacing one missing file.

Fix 4: Check the driver in Device Manager
Device Manager is useful for identifying a failed printer connection, although not every printer-driver problem appears there as a missing DLL.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers and Print queues.
- Look for the affected HP printer or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click the entry.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install any offered driver.
- Restart Windows.
- Try a test page.
If the device is not under Printers or Print queues, check Universal Serial Bus controllers for an unknown USB device when using a USB connection. Disconnect and reconnect the printer, then use Action > Scan for hardware changes.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Security software may have deleted or quarantined a printer component. That is possible, but you should not assume that every detection is a false positive.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
hpvscp50.dllor the HP printer installer. - Open the detection details.
- Note the file path and detection name.
- Do not restore the file if it was found in a random user-writable folder or an unexpected application directory.
- If the file belongs to a trusted, signed HP driver package, follow your security software’s verification and restore procedure.
- Reinstall the complete printer package afterward.
- Run another security scan.
A legitimate copy should be associated with the HP printer package or a Windows printer-driver location. A copy found in a temporary download directory, a user profile folder, or an unrelated application directory deserves additional scrutiny.
Do not create an antivirus exclusion merely to make the error disappear. First verify the file’s path, publisher signature, and relationship to the printer driver.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
hpvscp50.dll is an HP printer component, so System File Checker is not expected to restore it in the same way it can restore a protected Windows file. These commands are still useful when the printer error appears alongside broader Windows corruption, failed updates, or unrelated missing system components.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the HP printer driver.
If DISM reports that the operation completed successfully and SFC reports that it found and repaired integrity violations, test Windows again. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the missing HP file still needs to be repaired through the printer package.
If either command fails, copy the exact result. Do not repeatedly run the commands without addressing the reported servicing or component-store problem.
If manually repeating DISM and SFC leaves you unsure which Windows components changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair through the full version is optional. It is not a replacement for reinstalling the HP printer package when that package is the real source of hpvscp50.dll.
Fix 7: Consider System Restore after a recent change
Use System Restore only if the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, or printer-software change and normal removal and reinstallation did not work.

System Restore does not guarantee recovery of a third-party driver package. If the error returns, remove the old printer and reinstall it through Windows Update or the supported HP workflow rather than repeatedly restoring the system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not start with:
regsvr32 hpvscp50.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the DllRegisterServer entry point, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. A printer plug-in is normally installed and referenced through a printer-driver package, INF instructions, and the Windows print subsystem. It is not normally registered like a COM library.
If regsvr32 reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, that is expected for a DLL that was never designed for this registration method. It does not prove that the file is damaged.
What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, a modified file, the wrong historical build, or the wrong architecture. Even a genuine-looking copy may not match the rest of the HP package and may leave the driver store, INF files, permissions, or dependencies broken.
Never copy hpvscp50.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, an application folder, or a printer-driver directory as a general repair.
Use Windows Update, the Windows printer wizard, or HP’s official support workflow for the exact printer model.
Do not treat it as a Microsoft runtime
hpvscp50.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET library, Office dependency, or general Windows system file. Installing unrelated redistributables is unlikely to repair the printer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not rename a 32-bit file into a 64-bit solution
The historical package belongs to the 32-bit Windows driver era. A 32-bit DLL cannot be made into a 64-bit driver by renaming it or moving it between System32 and SysWOW64.
Modern 64-bit Windows can sometimes use older 32-bit printer components through compatibility mechanisms, but support depends on the printer, driver package, and Windows release. There is no universal architecture rule for every DeskJet model.
Do not delete arbitrary DriverStore files
Windows stores printer packages in protected locations, commonly under %windir%inf and %windir%System32DriverStoreFileRepository. Do not manually delete files from those directories. Remove the printer and its driver through Windows instead.

When the printer is no longer supported
An old DeskJet may work only with a limited in-OS driver, or it may fail because its legacy driver cannot operate on the current Windows release. Signs include:
- Windows offers no driver for the exact model.
- The printer installs but exposes only basic functions.
- The old HP installer will not run.
- The queue repeatedly recreates the same missing-DLL error.
- The printer works only on an older Windows computer.
- The device is detected but cannot produce a test page after a clean driver reinstall.
At that point, copying hpvscp50.dll is not a durable solution. Use the Windows in-OS driver if available, test the printer from an older supported Windows environment, or replace the printer if current Windows cannot provide a compatible driver.
FAQ
Is hpvscp50.dll part of Windows?
It is associated with Hewlett-Packard DeskJet printer software and historical printer-driver packages. It is not a current general Windows component that every Windows installation should contain.
Which printers used hpvscp50.dll?
Historical packages associate it with older HP DeskJet printers, particularly the DeskJet 710C and 720C families and related Windows printer packages. Do not assume that every HP DeskJet model uses the same file.
Why did the error appear after upgrading Windows?
An upgrade can preserve an old printer queue while changing, removing, or blocking part of its legacy driver. The queue may then request a file that is no longer installed or compatible.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I fix the error by registering the DLL?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies when the DLL exports DllRegisterServer. Printer plug-ins are normally installed as part of a complete printer-driver package.
What if the message says the specified module cannot be found?
That wording can mean either that hpvscp50.dll is absent or that one of its dependencies is missing. Reinstalling the complete printer package is safer than copying only the named file.
Will SFC restore hpvscp50.dll?
Not normally. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while this DLL is an HP printer component. Run DISM and SFC when broader Windows corruption is suspected, then repair the printer package separately.
How do I check whether a copy is genuine?
Inspect its path, file properties, digital signature, and association with an HP printer-driver package. A file in a recognized driver-store or printer-package location is less suspicious than one in a random user-writable directory. If antivirus detected it, review the detection before restoring it.
What information should I collect if the error remains?
Record the exact error text, printer model, Windows version, connection type, file path shown in the message, whether the error occurs during setup or printing, and what changed immediately before it appeared. This distinguishes a damaged driver from an unsupported legacy printer or an unrelated stale application reference.
