hpxp2436.dll is an HP scanner driver component, not a general Windows runtime. When hpxp2436.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, the safest repair is to reinstall the complete HP Scanjet driver package for the exact scanner model.
This file is identified as the Hewlett-Packard XP WIA minidriver. WIA means Windows Image Acquisition, the Windows driver framework used by scanners and cameras. Evidence associates the file with HP Scanjet 2400-series hardware, including the Scanjet G2410.
Do not start by downloading a loose copy of the DLL. A standalone file can be the wrong build, the wrong architecture, or missing the companion files and registration entries that the scanner needs.
hpxp2436.dll identification
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| File | hpxp2436.dll |
| Description | Hewlett-Packard XP WIA minidriver |
| Publisher | Hewlett-Packard |
| Category | Hardware driver |
| Associated hardware | HP Scanjet 2400-series scanners |
| Publicly listed build | 8.1.0.77 |
| Publicly listed architecture | 32-bit |
| Publicly listed size | Approximately 0.59 MB |
The listed version and size are identification clues, not a guarantee that every HP installation uses that exact copy. The HP driver package also contains architecture-specific installation information, including an amd64 section. That is why you should install the complete package matched to Windows rather than copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit system folder.

Errors caused by this problem
Windows may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because hpxp2436.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because hpxp2436.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting hpxp2436.dll.”
- “Error loading hpxp2436.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “hpxp2436.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The application named in the message may be HP scanning software, a Windows scanning utility, or another program attempting to access the scanner. The filename alone does not identify the exact application that displayed the error.
Also, “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean that hpxp2436.dll itself is absent. A dependency used by the HP driver may be missing, or the file may be present but incorrectly installed.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete HP Scanjet package
This is the most likely solution when the file was removed, damaged, or left behind after an incomplete uninstall.
Before reinstalling
- Disconnect the scanner’s USB cable.
- Close HP scanning software and any program that may be using the scanner.
- Write down the exact model printed on the scanner.
- Check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type under Device specifications.
The scanner model matters. Do not assume that a package for one HP Scanjet works for every HP scanner. The evidence for hpxp2436.dll points specifically to the Scanjet 2400 family and related packages, with the G2410 being a documented example.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Remove the damaged installation
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for HP Scanjet software.
- Select the matching HP scanner software.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If no HP software appears, continue with Device Manager cleanup instead.
Remove the stale scanner entry
- Disconnect the scanner if it is still connected.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Other devices.
- Find the HP Scanjet entry. It may appear with a warning icon or as an unknown imaging device.
- Right-click it and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows shows Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it when you are deliberately removing the old HP package.
- Select Uninstall.
- Close Device Manager.
- Restart Windows.
Device Manager labels vary between Windows releases. If the scanner is not visible, select View > Show hidden devices and check the imaging categories again.
Install the official HP package
- Open HP Support in your browser.
- Search for the exact Scanjet model.
- Open the model’s driver and software page.
- Select your Windows version when HP provides that choice.
- Download the complete scanner software or driver package, not an individual DLL.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Connect the scanner only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
If HP does not list your current Windows version, do not treat an older download as guaranteed to work. HP’s Scanjet 2400 support information lists older Windows releases, including Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, and 8, but that does not establish current Windows 10 or Windows 11 support.
How to check whether this worked
After restarting:
- Connect and power on the scanner.
- Open the HP scanning application.
- Start a preview or test scan.
- Check Device Manager for the scanner without a warning icon.
- Confirm that the original
hpxp2436.dllerror no longer appears.
If the scanner is detected but the HP software still fails, the installation may have incomplete WIA registration, missing companion files, or a compatibility problem. Continue with the next fixes rather than copying a DLL manually.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through Device Manager and guessing which hardware package is stale; its free scan identifies driver issues, while repair and driver installation are handled by the full version. It is optional, and the exact HP Scanjet package remains the preferred source for this particular file.
Fix 2: Check the Windows Image Acquisition service
The DLL is a WIA scanner component. If the Windows Image Acquisition service is disabled or stopped, reinstalling the driver may not be enough.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic or Manual, depending on the existing Windows configuration.
- If Service status is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the scanner again.
If the service refuses to start, record the exact error. That points to a Windows service or dependency problem rather than proving that the DLL itself is missing.
Do not install random Windows Features
The Turn Windows features on or off panel does not provide a replacement for an HP Scanjet driver. Do not enable unrelated legacy components in the hope that they will recreate hpxp2436.dll.

To inspect the panel without changing anything:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the list.
- Select Cancel unless you have a specific Windows feature requirement documented for your scanner software.
The HP package, not an optional Windows feature, is responsible for installing this scanner-specific component.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may quarantine a driver file. This is a possible cause, not proof of the cause.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the HP installer or scanner driver.
- Expand a detection to view its location and details.
Only consider restoring a file when it came from a trusted HP installation and you have checked that the installer is legitimate and digitally signed. If Protection History identifies a file from an untrusted DLL download, do not restore it.
If a trusted HP driver was quarantined, reinstall the package from HP instead of restoring an isolated DLL. If Windows Security repeatedly removes the same file, investigate the detection before making an exception.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a missing third-party HP scanner DLL, so use them as secondary checks.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the scanner.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM supplies the repair source used for Windows component repair.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files appear intact. Reinstall the HP package and investigate compatibility.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
- DISM reports that source files could not be found: Windows repair needs further servicing, but this still does not prove that the HP DLL will be restored.
- SFC cannot repair some files: Save the result, restart, and return to the HP driver and compatibility checks.
Repeatedly running SFC will not install a vendor driver that was never part of Windows.
If manually comparing Windows repair results and driver versions is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is completed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the HP Scanjet package.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 5: Check architecture and mixed driver files
A 32-bit listing for hpxp2436.dll does not mean you should copy that file into a 64-bit Windows installation. The driver package determines how the component is installed and which companion files it uses.
Avoid these combinations:
- A DLL copied from another computer with a different Scanjet model.
- A 32-bit standalone file inserted into a 64-bit driver package.
- Files taken from an old installation mixed with a newer HP package.
- A DLL copied into
System32,SysWOW64, or an application folder. - A driver package intended for a different Windows release.
If you suspect mixed files:
- Uninstall HP scanner software.
- Remove the scanner from Device Manager.
- Disconnect the scanner.
- Restart Windows.
- Install one complete package from HP.
- Reconnect the scanner when prompted.
- Restart again.
The operating system’s architecture and the DLL’s architecture are related, but the filename alone does not tell you which package is correct.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is relevant if the error began immediately after a driver update, software removal, Windows change, or other system modification.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the scanner stopped working.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Select Finish and confirm.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but review the affected-program list before proceeding.

After the rollback completes, test the scanner. If the error returns, install the correct HP package rather than relying on an older restored driver indefinitely.
Fix 7: Resolve legacy scanner compatibility limits
Some HP Scanjet 2400-series drivers predate Windows 10 and Windows 11. An old Windows XP or Windows 7 package is not guaranteed to work on a current release.
If HP does not list your Windows version:
- Confirm the exact scanner model.
- Check HP Support for the latest package offered for that model.
- Read the installer’s compatibility requirements.
- Try compatibility mode only if the installer or HP documentation permits it:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose the appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Test scanning after installation.
Compatibility mode cannot create a modern driver where no compatible driver exists. If the scanner remains unsupported, the practical choices are a supported scanning application, an appropriately maintained operating system, or a scanner with current drivers.
Do not disable Windows security protections broadly to force an old package to install.

Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong fix
You may find advice telling you to run:
regsvr32 hpxp2436.dll
That is not a general repair for this file. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A legacy WIA minidriver is installed through the HP driver package and its INF instructions, not necessarily by manually registering the DLL.
Running the command can produce:
- An entry-point error.
- An architecture mismatch error.
- A message caused by loading the file from the wrong folder.
- No improvement because companion files or WIA registration are still missing.
If the HP installer fails, reinstall the package and clean the old device entry instead. Do not place the DLL in a system folder and then register it.
What not to do
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or tampered files.
- The wrong version.
- The wrong architecture.
- A file for a different HP scanner.
- A DLL without its companion driver files.
- A file that bypasses the installer’s required registration and catalog process.
Even when a downloaded copy has the same filename, it may not be compatible with your scanner or Windows installation.
Do not treat it as a Windows system DLL
hpxp2436.dll is associated with an HP Scanjet driver package. It is not a generic Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or standard Windows runtime file. SFC may report that Windows is healthy because the HP DLL is not a protected Windows component.

A scanner that appears in Device Manager can still fail in HP software when the WIA registration, companion DLLs, catalog, or service setup is incomplete. Remove the old package and reinstall one complete, model-appropriate package.
If the error remains
Collect these details before repeating repairs:
- Exact Scanjet model.
- Full error text.
- Windows edition and build.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The HP package source and installation result.
- Whether the scanner appears under Device Manager.
- Whether Windows Security shows a quarantine event.
- Whether the error occurs in HP software, Windows Scan, or another application.
If the error returns immediately after a clean installation, check Protection History, verify the installer’s digital signature, and remove duplicate or stale HP scanner packages. If no compatible HP package exists for the current Windows release, the underlying problem is likely hardware support rather than a missing DLL that can be safely replaced.
