boscomp.dll is identified as the “BOS/SBS Compliancy dll,” a Microsoft component associated with Microsoft Windows 2000. It is not established as a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file, and no specific modern application, game, driver, or runtime package has been reliably identified as its caller.
The safest fix is therefore not to download a replacement DLL. First identify the program that displays the error, then repair or reinstall that program from its original vendor media or verified source. If the computer genuinely runs Windows 2000, use its original installation media and System File Checker instead.

What boscomp.dll is, and what is not known
Available file metadata describes boscomp.dll as:
- Description: BOS/SBS Compliancy dll
- Product: Microsoft(R) Windows (R) 2000 Operating System
- Publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- Category: Microsoft application or component
- Architecture: Reported as a 32-bit Win32 DLL
That points to a very old Windows 2000-era component. It does not prove that Windows 10 or Windows 11 normally includes or requires the file. There is also no verified official standalone Microsoft download for boscomp.dll.

The filename alone does not identify the application that requested it. The caller could be an old program, an abandoned installer, software copied from another computer, a compatibility-mode installation, or a protected file on a genuine Windows 2000 system.
The exact wording also matters. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency used by boscomp.dll is missing. It does not always mean that the named file itself is absent.
Causes and the correct repair
| Likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| An old application expects the file | Repair or reinstall that application |
| A genuine Windows 2000 protected file was deleted | Run Windows 2000 SFC with the original installation source |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Review quarantine history and restore only a trusted file |
| Software was copied from another computer | Reinstall the complete package or replace it |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC on supported Windows |
| A recent installation damaged system files | Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists |
| Wrong architecture or dependency | Reinstall the parent program in a compatible environment |
Fix 1: Identify the program that is calling boscomp.dll
Do this before copying any file or modifying System32.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the complete error dialog
Look for the executable name, program title, installation folder, or shortcut that launched the error. If the message appears after double-clicking a particular application, that application is the first repair target.
Also note whether the error appears:
- At Windows sign-in
- When opening a specific application
- When launching an installer
- After starting a game
- After antivirus cleanup
- After migrating software from another PC
- After enabling compatibility mode
A message that appears only when one old program starts usually belongs to that program, not to Windows itself.
Check the executable folder
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Check whether
boscomp.dllis expected beside the program executable.
Do not assume that the correct location is C:WindowsSystem32. Application-owned DLLs commonly belong in the application’s own directory.
Check Event Viewer
On Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Open the event and record the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and path.
Event Viewer may identify the executable even when the pop-up does not.

Microsoft’s Process Explorer can show which process has loaded or attempted to load a DLL. Download it only from Microsoft’s Sysinternals pages, run it as administrator, and use Find to search for boscomp.dll while starting the affected program.
If the result identifies an application directory, repair that application. If it points to a Windows system directory, continue with the Windows repair steps below.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the originating application
This is the most likely solution when the error appears on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Use Windows program repair
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application that triggers the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
Some traditional desktop programs use a different path:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Uninstall/Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
If there is no repair option, uninstall the program and restart Windows. Reinstall it from the original vendor media or a verified vendor download, not from a DLL archive.
For a game, use its launcher’s built-in Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking option when available. No particular game or launcher has been verified as the owner of boscomp.dll, so do not install a runtime package merely because a search result suggests it.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The original program opens normally.
- The
boscomp.dllmessage does not return. - The program’s own installer completes without a missing-file error.
- Event Viewer no longer records the same application failure.
If the same message returns immediately after reinstalling, confirm that you reinstalled the correct program and that the error is not being generated by a separate startup item.
Fix 3: Run the correct Windows repair commands
Do not use the same repair procedure on every Windows version.

- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:

- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a suitable source is available.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the application repair steps and review the executable path. The problem may be an application-owned legacy DLL rather than a damaged Windows component.
If DISM reports that the source files cannot be found, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the commands again. Do not solve a source error by downloading boscomp.dll from an unverified archive.
Manually tracking Windows component versions and repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows reported problems, while repair features are handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the specific legacy application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the file.

Windows 2000 uses a different repair path. DISM is not the appropriate tool for that operating system.
- Log on with administrator rights.
- Open Start.
- Select Run.
- Type:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- If prompted, provide the original Windows 2000 installation CD or an approved installation source.
- Allow System File Checker to restore protected files.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the program again.
Windows 2000 SFC can use the protected-file cache under %SystemRoot%System32Dllcache or the original installation source. If the file is genuinely part of that installation and has been deleted or corrupted, this is safer than obtaining a loose copy.
Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 is an operating-system update for compatible x86 Windows 2000 systems. It is not a confirmed standalone boscomp.dll download. Do not apply it to a modern Windows installation.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
If the error began after malware removal, a security scan, or cleanup software, the file may have been quarantined.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand any entry involving the application or
boscomp.dll. - Confirm the original file path and detection details.
- Scan the entire computer before restoring anything.
Restore a quarantined file only when you have confirmed that it belongs to a trusted installation and the detection is a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring malicious content can put the device at risk.
If the file was located in an unexpected temporary folder, a user profile folder, or an unknown application directory, do not restore it. Reinstall the parent program from a trusted source instead.
If malware is suspected, run an offline or full security scan before attempting repairs. For serious compromise, backing up personal data and reinstalling Windows from trusted installation media may be safer than restoring individual files.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore can help when the error began immediately after installing software, a driver, or an update and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error appeared.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, and settings. It normally does not remove personal documents, but applications and updates installed after the selected restore point may be affected.
After Windows restarts, test the application that produced the error. If the error remains, undoing the system change did not address the underlying application or dependency.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when the error is tied to hardware software
No particular driver has been identified as the verified owner of boscomp.dll. Still, check drivers if the message appeared after installing a printer, scanner, adapter, chipset package, or other hardware utility.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a rollback:
- Return to the device’s Properties window.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Confirm the reason and restart.
Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official support page when Windows cannot find a driver. Do not expect a driver update to replace an application-owned boscomp.dll.
Finding the correct driver manually can involve checking hardware identifiers, Windows architecture, and several vendor packages. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing reported driver problems, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the program that actually requested boscomp.dll.
Fix 7: Check Windows Features only when the application requires one
Enabling random Windows Features will not normally restore an unidentified Windows 2000 DLL. Use this step only when the affected program’s documentation specifically requires a legacy Windows component.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the available Windows Features.
- Enable only the feature required by the application.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test the program.
Do not enable a feature simply because its name contains “legacy” or “compatibility.” The file’s Windows 2000 association does not establish that it belongs to a current .NET, DirectX, Visual C++, or other runtime package.

Why manual DLL copying usually fails
Downloading boscomp.dll from a random DLL website creates several problems:
- The file may contain malware.
- It may be the wrong Windows version.
- It may be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- It may be damaged or incomplete.
- It may have been taken from an unrelated application.
- It may require other missing dependencies.
- It may not match the executable that requests it.
- It can hide the real problem, such as a damaged installer or removed program files.
Available metadata identifies this file as a 32-bit DLL, and no verified 64-bit build has been established. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system binaries while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. Those names are counterintuitive, so copying the same file into both folders is not a valid repair procedure.
The correct location may instead be the application’s own folder. Let the original installer place the file where the program expects it.
Why regsvr32 is usually irrelevant
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is primarily used for certain COM and ActiveX components.
There is no verified evidence that boscomp.dll is a self-registering COM DLL. Running commands such as these is therefore not a general repair:
regsvr32 boscomp.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32boscomp.dll
A “Cannot register boscomp.dll” message does not prove that registration is required. It often means the wrong command was applied to a DLL that is not designed for registration. Repair the owning application or use SFC instead.
32-bit and 64-bit checks
Because boscomp.dll is identified as a 32-bit Win32 file, architecture matters when an old application runs on 64-bit Windows.
Check the application rather than guessing:
- Right-click the application executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open Details if available.
- Record the product and publisher information.
- Check the vendor’s documentation for supported Windows versions and architecture.
A 32-bit program can often run through Windows compatibility support, but an old Windows 2000 program may depend on obsolete components that current Windows no longer supplies. If reinstalling the original application does not work, use an isolated legacy computer or virtual environment appropriate for the software, or replace the unsupported program.
Do not weaken security protections or copy system files from another machine merely to make an obsolete application launch.
What to collect if the error remains
Before contacting the software vendor, record:
- The complete error message
- The executable name
- The application’s installation path
- The Windows version and architecture
- When the error began
- Whether it followed an update, cleanup, migration, or malware scan
- The Event Viewer application error
- The original path shown in antivirus history
- Whether repair, reinstall, DISM, or SFC changed the result
This information distinguishes an application-owned file from a genuine Windows component problem.
FAQ
Is boscomp.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file?
There is no evidence that Windows 10 or Windows 11 normally includes or requires it. Available metadata associates it with Microsoft Windows 2000.
Which application uses boscomp.dll?
No dependable public identification of a specific current application, game, driver, or installer has been verified. Identify the caller from the error dialog, executable folder, Event Viewer, or Process Explorer.
Should I download boscomp.dll?
No. There is no verified official standalone Microsoft download. Repair the application that requested it, or use SFC with original Windows 2000 media when working on a genuine Windows 2000 installation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. The correct location is not established by the error message, and the reported file is 32-bit. Copying it into both folders can introduce the wrong architecture and does not repair dependencies.
Will regsvr32 fix the problem?
Usually not. There is no evidence that boscomp.dll is a self-registering COM component. regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command.
What if SFC finds nothing?
If SFC reports no integrity violations, the problem is more likely application-specific, dependency-related, or caused by an incompatible legacy program. Reinstall the originating application and inspect its installation folder.
What if the program still fails after reinstalling?
Capture the full error and executable details, confirm whether the program is 32-bit, and contact its original vendor. If the software only supports Windows 2000, run it in an isolated legacy environment or replace it rather than forcing an unverified DLL into modern Windows.
