You may see messages such as “The program can’t start because hpz2ku09.dll is missing from your computer” or “The code execution cannot proceed because hpz2ku09.dll was not found.” hpz2ku09.dll is an old HP DeskJet printer-driver component, not a normal Windows runtime file.
The 60-second answer
Do not download hpz2ku09.dll separately or copy it into System32. The safest repair is to identify the HP printer that installed it, remove the old printer and HP software, restart Windows, and install the complete model-specific driver package from HP or the printer’s original installation media.

If the printer is very old, its original package may not support Windows 10 or Windows 11. Windows may still offer a compatible built-in printer driver, but HP-specific features such as scanning, ink monitoring, and maintenance tools may not be available.

hpz2ku09.dll is commonly identified as HPDJ Driver, an HP component associated with HP DeskJet printer software. Historical printer-driver records associate it with an old HP2110 package in the x86, or 32-bit, Windows driver environment.

A commonly indexed record describes a 32-bit version 0.3.0.0 build measuring approximately 0.18 MB. Those details come from historical and third-party file records, not a current universal HP package manifest. Other HP printer packages can contain different builds, so do not treat that version as the only valid copy.
This file is not:
- A Microsoft Windows system component
- A Visual C++ runtime file
- A DirectX component
- A .NET Framework file
- A general-purpose DLL that belongs in
C:WindowsSystem32 - A file that should be registered routinely with
regsvr32
The expected copy normally belongs inside an HP printer-driver package or Windows’ managed printer-driver store.
Is hpz2ku09.dll safe or a virus?
The filename is associated with legitimate HP printer software, but a filename alone cannot prove that every copy is authentic. Check the file’s location, digital signature, installation source, and antivirus results.
A genuine copy is more credible when it came from:
- An HP printer installer
- The original HP installation CD
- A Windows-managed printer-driver package
- A known HP software installation directory
Treat a copy found in an unrelated application folder, a temporary directory, or a user profile with caution. Scan it with Microsoft Defender and avoid restoring it from quarantine unless you have confirmed that it came from the original HP package.
There is no reason to place this DLL manually in System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. The HP installer should decide where the file belongs.
Which HP printer installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the exact printer model. It points broadly to older HP DeskJet software, and historical evidence links it to an HP2110 driver package, but that does not prove every hpz2ku09.dll error came from that model.
Look for the owning printer in these places:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Review the installed printers and note any HP DeskJet model.
- Also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for HP software or an old printer-specific entry.
If the printer was removed already, check:
- The printer’s original CD or packaging
- Old setup files in your Downloads folder
- Backup images or archived software
- Control Panel > Devices and Printers
- Device Manager > Print queues and Printers
An unrelated program may also have copied an old HP component. If the error appears while opening an old application rather than while printing, note the application’s installation path before changing anything.

The named file may genuinely be absent, but Windows’ “specified module could not be found” message can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL cannot load.
Common causes include:
-
An incomplete HP installation
The printer package may have been interrupted, partially removed, or damaged. -
An old driver migrated badly during a Windows upgrade
Legacy printer files can remain registered while supporting files are removed.Rank #2

Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the complete HP printer package
This is the primary repair for most hpz2ku09.dll errors.
Remove the printer
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if it is connected.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
If more than one copy of the printer appears, remove stale copies with the same model name.
Remove HP software
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the printer model and HP.
- Uninstall the matching printer software, driver utility, HP Easy Start entry, HP Smart entry, or HP app.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove unrelated HP software unless you know it belongs to this printer installation.
Install the correct package
Identify the exact printer model, then use HP’s printer software and driver page or the original HP installation CD. Select the package for your Windows version and architecture when the installer provides that choice.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a supported product, HP’s setup software may select the model-specific driver automatically. Connect the printer only when the installer requests it.

The reinstall worked if:
- The HP setup completes without a DLL error
- The printer appears under Printers & scanners
- A test page prints
- The original program opens without requesting
hpz2ku09.dll - No new missing-DLL message appears after restarting Windows
If the installer reports that the printer is unsupported, continue to the old-printer section below rather than copying the DLL manually.
Optional driver cleanup through Device Manager
If the old device remains:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Print queues, Printers, and, if present, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the old HP device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If shown, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device or Delete the driver software for this device.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
The wording varies by Windows version and driver type. Do not uninstall unrelated printers or USB devices.
Fix 2: Update or reinstall the printer driver
A damaged or incompatible driver package can produce the same error even when the printer still appears in Windows.
Check Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if available.
- Install a matching HP printer driver.
- Restart Windows.
Windows Update may provide a basic class driver rather than the complete HP package. Basic printing can work while scanning or maintenance features remain unavailable.
Reinstall through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Print queues or Printers.
- Right-click the HP printer.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs a replacement.
If no driver is found, remove the device using the previous section and install the complete package from HP.
When you are manually hunting through old packages and trying to determine which of several installed drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and identify outdated entries; its free scan shows what is wrong, while the repair or driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the exact HP model package remains the preferred source for this specific printer.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove a printer component while leaving the rest of the HP installation behind.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined items.
- Look for an HP-related file or an event that matches the time the error began.
- Inspect the file path and threat details before taking action.
If the quarantined file clearly came from the original HP installation and the detection is a false positive, follow Microsoft’s documented restoration process. If the source is uncertain, leave it quarantined and reinstall the complete HP package instead.
Do not download a replacement simply because the antivirus removed the original. A clean reinstall provides the surrounding files and dependencies as well as the DLL.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows itself appears damaged, Windows Update is failing, or several unrelated system components report errors. They are secondary steps for hpz2ku09.dll because this is an HP third-party driver file.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. A successful result means Windows repaired or verified protected Windows components. It does not guarantee that an incomplete HP driver package has been restored.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the actual problem is an old printer package. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows repair issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the HP package remains the direct fix for this driver-specific error.
Fix 5: Remove a stuck driver package
Use this only after identifying the old HP package. Removing the wrong published driver can affect another printer.
Try Print Server Properties
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
printui.exe /s /t2
- Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Select the old HP driver.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Restart Windows.
If Windows says the driver is in use, remove every printer using that driver, restart the Print Spooler service, and try again.
Use PnPUtil only when necessary
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- List installed third-party driver packages:
pnputil /enum-drivers
- Find the HP printer package by its provider, class, model, or related INF information.
- Record the exact published name, such as
oem42.inf. - Remove only that confirmed package:
pnputil /delete-driver oem42.inf /uninstall
Replace oem42.inf with the published name you actually found. Never guess the oem#.inf value.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMicrosoft documents this driver-package removal syntax for supported Windows versions. Restart after removal, then install the correct HP package.
Fix 6: Handle an unsupported or very old HP printer
Some legacy DeskJet models no longer have a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 package.
Try this order:
- Check HP’s driver page using the exact model number.
- Install the newest package HP provides for your Windows version.
- If no package exists, remove the damaged HP software.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Allow Windows to search for the printer.
- If necessary, choose Add manually.
- Select a compatible built-in driver when Windows offers one.
- Print a test page.
A built-in driver may restore basic printing without restoring HP scanning, ink-level monitoring, alignment, or maintenance features.
If the printer only works with an older operating system, use it from a supported older computer or virtualized environment rather than forcing a 32-bit legacy DLL into the current Windows installation.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is hpz2ku09.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The commonly documented build is 32-bit. That is consistent with its historical association with an x86 HP2110 driver package.
A 32-bit printer component can still run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ compatibility support. Therefore, seeing 64-bit Windows does not mean every printer DLL must be 64-bit.
Do not “fix” an architecture concern by downloading a 64-bit copy from an unknown source. The correct architecture and version are determined by the complete HP driver package and the printer software that uses it.

Why regsvr32 is usually not the fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver DLL is not automatically a self-registering COM component.
Recommended Free Tools
Running commands such as these is therefore not a routine repair:
regsvr32 hpz2ku09.dll
On 64-bit Windows, using the wrong regsvr32 path can also create an architecture mismatch. If the command reports that the entry point is missing, it confirms that registration is not the appropriate operation. Restore the complete printer package instead.
When to use System Restore
Use System Restore if the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows upgrade, or major software change and a restore point exists.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system settings, drivers, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal files. Afterward, prevent the damaged package from returning by reinstalling the correct HP software or removing the old printer completely.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the error persists after reinstalling
Work through this checklist:
- Confirm the HP printer model rather than relying on the DLL name.
- Check whether the error occurs during printing, at Windows sign-in, or when opening a particular legacy application.
- Inspect the erroring application’s installation folder.
- Check Windows Security > Protection history again.
- Review Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for the failing program and module name.
- Confirm that the printer driver appears only once under Printers & scanners.
- Remove duplicate or stale HP printers.
- Check the disk for file-system errors if files disappear again.
- Try a clean boot to identify software that reloads the old component.
- Test with a new Windows user profile to distinguish per-user corruption from a system-wide driver problem.
If the message names a different missing DLL after reinstalling, that points to a dependency or a separate damaged component. If the message says “specified module could not be found,” the named file may exist while one of its dependencies is missing.
FAQ
Can I download hpz2ku09.dll by itself?
No. An isolated DLL can have the wrong version or architecture, omit required dependencies, or contain malware. Reinstall the complete HP printer package from HP or the original media.
Is hpz2ku09.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with HP DeskJet printer software and is not a general Windows component.
Does the filename identify my printer?
No. It indicates an old HP DeskJet driver component, but the exact printer model must be identified from installed devices, software, packaging, or installation media.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. The HP installer or Windows driver store should place driver files in the correct location.
Will SFC restore this DLL?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components. It is useful for Windows servicing corruption, but it does not replace a missing HP third-party driver package.
Why does a 32-bit DLL appear on 64-bit Windows?
Older printer software may contain 32-bit components that run on 64-bit Windows. Reinstall the package that matches the printer and Windows version rather than replacing the DLL manually.
What if HP no longer supports my printer?
Try Windows Update or a compatible built-in printer driver for basic printing. If no compatible driver exists, use the printer from an older supported system and remove the broken legacy package from the current Windows installation.
