1. Identify the affected printer
If the error appears while printing, note the printer selected by the application. If it appears during Windows startup, check which HP printer is installed:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Review the installed printers and note every HP model.
- Select an HP printer and record its exact model name.
Also check the application that displays the error. An old HP status monitor, scanning utility, or printer shortcut may still be trying to load a driver even if the physical printer is no longer connected.
2. Remove the current printer
- In Printers & scanners, select the affected HP printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.

3. Download the correct HP package

Prefer the full software and driver package when HP provides one, because it is more likely to include the complete rendering and monitoring components.
Do not search for hpz5rwn7.dll as a standalone download. HP distributes this file as part of a printer package, not as a general Windows component.
4. Install the package
- Right-click the downloaded HP installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installer’s connection instructions.

Fix 2: Remove the old HP driver package completely
Time needed: 15–25 minutes
This step is useful after a Windows upgrade, printer replacement, failed uninstall, or repeated HP installer failure. An orphaned package can leave Windows pointing at an old copy of hpz5rwn7.dll.
Remove the device through Device Manager

Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin):
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- List third-party driver packages:
pnputil /enum-drivers
- Find the HP package and note its Published Name, which normally has an
oemname. - Remove only the confirmed HP package:
pnputil /delete-driver oem##.inf /uninstall
Replace oem##.inf with the published name shown on your computer.
Restart Windows, then install the exact package from HP. Microsoft advises against manually modifying the Driver Store. Do not browse to %windir%System32DriverStoreFileRepository and delete hpz5rwn7.dll yourself.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus any restart
DISM and SFC repair Windows servicing files and protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party HP printer payload, so use them after repairing the HP package rather than instead of it.
Run DISM
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the permission prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.

Run System File Checker
Open an elevated terminal again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or could not repair some files.

Fix 6: Install pending Windows updates
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Windows Update can provide a compatible class driver or correct printer-installation components, particularly after a Windows upgrade.

Do not copy a random DLL into System32

The only reasonable manual extraction scenario is taking the matching file from a verified official HP installer package during controlled troubleshooting. Do not place an arbitrary copy in C:WindowsSystem32.
Do not delete the Driver Store file directly
Printer packages may be staged under:
%windir%System32DriverStoreFileRepository
The Driver Store contains complete trusted driver packages. Delete packages through Device Manager, Print Server Properties, or the documented pnputil workflow after identifying the correct package. Direct deletion can leave Windows with broken package records.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. hpz5rwn7.dll is a printer-rendering component, not established as a COM server that needs routine registration.
Running this command is therefore not a normal fix:
regsvr32 HPZ5RWN7.DLL
It may produce an entry-point error, architecture error, or another message without repairing the printer. Reinstall the complete driver package instead.
