Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If Windows reports that “hpbresw81.dll is missing from your computer,” “hpbresw81.dll was not found,” or “hpbresw81.dll could not be loaded,” the problem usually belongs to an HP printer-driver installation. The hpbresw81.dll file is a printer-driver component, not a general Windows runtime that should be downloaded and copied into a system folder.
The 60-second answer
hpbresw81.dll is associated with Hewlett-Packard printer software, especially HP PCLm and PCL-class driver packages. It may appear with files such as hpbx3w81.dll, GPD printer-description files, rendering components, and printer configuration files.
The safest repair is:
- Identify the HP printer or old HP printer package involved.
- Remove the damaged printer installation if necessary.
- Download the driver or full software package for the exact printer model from HP’s official support site.
- Install it for the correct Windows version and architecture.
- Restart Windows and print a test page.
Do not download an isolated copy of hpbresw81.dll, place it in System32, or run regsvr32 against it. Those steps can create a mismatched driver installation and usually do not repair the package that Windows is trying to load.
What is hpbresw81.dll?
Public file information describes hpbresw81.dll as the HP Localization Plugin, published by Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. It is found inside HP printer-driver packages rather than being a standalone application runtime.
#1 Best Overall
One known HP driver layout places the file in a path resembling:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepositoryprnhpcl1.inf_amd64_...amd64hpbresw81.dll
The exact folder name varies by driver package and Windows installation. The important part is DriverStoreFileRepository, which is where Windows keeps installed driver packages.
Some public inventories list 32-bit builds such as versions 0.3.9391.0 and 0.3.8315.0, while HP driver packages can also contain an amd64 copy for 64-bit Windows. That means there is no single universal version or replacement file that is correct for every printer.
The name “Unidrive strings” appears in some public file metadata, but it should not be treated as the confirmed product name. The reliable connection is to HP printer-driver software.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs hpbresw81.dll part of Windows?
No. It is not a normal Microsoft system DLL, DirectX component, .NET file, or Visual C++ runtime.
Windows may store it under a protected system-managed DriverStore directory, which can make it look like a Windows file. That location only means the file is part of an installed driver package. It does not mean the file belongs to the Windows operating system itself.
Installing Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET is therefore not the normal repair for this specific error. A missing dependency can sometimes produce a message naming the wrong file, but the first repair should still target the HP printer package.
What the error messages mean
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because hpbresw81.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “hpbresw81.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading hpbresw81.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load hpbresw81.dll.”
- “Application could not be started because hpbresw81.dll file is missing.”
- “hpbresw81.dll could not be loaded.”
- “The program was unable to start because hpbresw81.dll is missing.”
These messages do not necessarily prove that the DLL itself is the only missing item. Windows can report a printer DLL when:
- The DLL was removed or quarantined.
- A supporting file is missing.
- The installed driver is incomplete.
- A 32-bit and 64-bit component were mixed.
- A printer queue still points to an older driver.
- The driver package was damaged during installation.
- An HP application is trying to use a retired printer.
If the message says that the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” treat that as a general Windows loader error. It usually indicates corruption, incompatibility, or the wrong architecture. It is not a special diagnosis for hpbresw81.dll.
Why the problem may have started
Think back to what changed immediately before the error appeared.
An HP printer was removed or reinstalled
Removing a printer does not always remove every driver package, helper program, or startup reference. An HP utility may still try to load a component belonging to the old printer.
Windows Update changed the printer driver
Windows can replace or reinstall a printer class driver after an update. The resulting package may not match an older HP utility or an existing printer queue.

An HP driver update was interrupted
A failed installer, power loss, restart, or disconnected printer can leave only part of the package installed. The main driver may remain while a localization or rendering component is absent.
Antivirus quarantined the file
Security software may remove a damaged or suspicious-looking file. Check quarantine history before restoring anything. Reinstalling the complete driver from HP is safer than restoring an isolated DLL.
Cleanup or registry software removed a reference
Disk cleanup and registry-cleaning programs can remove files or registrations that older printer software still expects. Registry repair is not the correct way to replace a missing driver package.
The printer is no longer used
If the printer was retired, the correct fix may be to remove the stale queue and HP software rather than reinstalling the old driver.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFix 1: Identify the affected HP printer
Start by finding out whether Windows still has an HP printer or driver installed.
Check installed printers
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for HP printers, including printers marked offline or unavailable.
- Open each likely printer and note its exact model name.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Record the HP printer model.
Also check the old Control Panel view:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Look for HP printers and fax or scan entries.
If the error appears when starting a particular HP utility, its name may identify the affected printer even if the printer is no longer listed.
Check HP applications
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for HP.
- Record entries related to the printer, such as HP device software, printer assistants, scanning software, or older model-specific packages.
Do not uninstall every HP entry automatically. HP may have software for other printers or scanners that are still in use.
Check the driver store carefully
Advanced users can open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
pnputil /enum-drivers
Look for HP entries and published names such as oem##.inf. A package associated with prnhpcl1.inf may be relevant to PCL-class printing.
Do not delete a package merely because it mentions HP. First confirm that it belongs to the printer producing the error. Removing the wrong package can disable another printer.
Fix 2: Remove and reinstall the correct HP package
This is the most likely successful repair.
Remove the affected printer
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10, use Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners, select the printer, and choose Remove device.
If Windows says the printer is in use, close HP utilities and any open document, then restart and try again.

Remove related HP software if the installation is damaged
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the exact HP software connected with that printer.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If you still use HP scanning or another HP printer, do not remove software that belongs to that device.
Download from HP
Open HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter the exact printer model, select the installed Windows version, and download either the full software package or the basic driver recommended for that model.
Avoid using a package for a similar model. Printer families can use different rendering files and driver components even when their names look nearly identical.
Install the package
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if the HP installer instructs you to do so.
- Close other printer and scanning applications.
- Right-click the downloaded HP installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose the connection type requested by the installer.
- Connect the printer when prompted.
- Allow the installer to complete.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Open Printers & scanners and confirm that the printer is present.
- Print a Windows test page.
To print a test page:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Select Printer properties.
- Open the General tab.
- Select Print Test Page.
If the test page prints and the original program opens without the error, the driver package has been restored.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through several driver versions and guessing which package is stale; its free scan shows detected driver problems, while the repair or driver installation requires the full version. For this file, however, the exact HP model-specific installer remains the definitive repair.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
If the HP installer reports that a file already exists but Windows still says it is missing, check whether security software removed it.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined items.
- Look for
hpbresw81.dll, an HP printer package, or a related installer.
Microsoft explains how Protection History records quarantined items and available actions.
Do not restore the file simply because its name looks familiar. First confirm:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- The file came from an HP driver installation.
- Its path is a normal driver location.
- The printer model matches the package.
- The file has a valid digital signature or is contained in a trusted HP installer.
- A current security scan does not identify it as malicious.
The safer action is usually to remove the damaged HP package and reinstall it from HP. If the same file is quarantined again, stop reinstalling and investigate the detection with your security provider.
Fix 4: Check architecture and digital signatures
A 32-bit DLL cannot be substituted freely for a 64-bit driver component, and a file from one HP driver revision may not work with another.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Review System type.
On Windows 10, open Settings > System > About and review System type there.
To inspect a DLL that already exists:
- Browse to the file in File Explorer.
- Right-click
hpbresw81.dll. - Select Properties.
- Review the Details tab.
- Open Digital Signatures, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
You can also use Microsoft Sysinternals Sigcheck:
sigcheck -i -h "C:fullpathhpbresw81.dll"
Replace the path with the actual location. A signature check does not prove that the file is appropriate for your printer, but an unexpected location, missing signature, or unrelated publisher is a reason to investigate rather than copy the file.
A file in an HP DriverStore package is more plausible than one found in a download folder, a temporary directory, or an unrelated application directory.

Fix 5: Remove a stale driver package only after identification
If reinstalling fails because Windows keeps selecting a damaged package, remove the old printer and identify its driver package first.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
pnputil /enum-drivers
- Note the Published Name and Original Name for the affected HP package.
- Confirm that the package belongs to the retired or damaged printer.
- Remove it with the published name:
pnputil /delete-driver oem##.inf /uninstall
Replace oem##.inf with the confirmed published name.
Do not guess the name. Do not remove a package because it is old, because it contains the word HP, or because it is not currently visible in Printers & scanners. If Windows refuses the removal, leave the package in place and use the HP installer or Device Manager instead.
Recommended Free Tools
After removal, restart Windows and install the correct HP package again.
Fix 6: Check the printer in Device Manager
Device Manager can reveal a driver problem that is not obvious in Settings.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the HP printer or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and driver date.
If the device is clearly the obsolete printer:
- Right-click it.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver software.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current package from HP.
Do not uninstall an unknown printer device when other printers are working. Record its name first so it can be restored if necessary.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components when system servicing is damaged
DISM and SFC are useful when Windows has broader corruption, updates fail, or the DriverStore itself appears damaged. They are not normally the primary repair for a missing third-party HP DLL.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open the Start menu.

- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the HP printer package if the error remains.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is expected to download hpbresw81.dll from the internet.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of reviewing system problems and repeating DISM or SFC less guess-based; its free scan shows detected issues, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the specific HP printer software remains the definitive fix for this printer DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows change, or cleanup operation and a restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore rolls back drivers, applications, and system settings without removing personal documents. It does not replace a missing HP package permanently, so reinstall the correct driver afterward if needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 hpbresw81.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or OLE DLLs and ActiveX controls. A printer localization or resource DLL is not established as a COM server, so it may not contain the required DllRegisterServer entry point.
A registration error does not repair a missing printer driver. It only confirms that the command was inappropriate for that file.

Why copying the DLL is unsafe
Downloading hpbresw81.dll from a random DLL site can give you:
- Malware or a tampered file.
- The wrong HP driver revision.
- A 32-bit file for a 64-bit component.
- A file missing its companion rendering or configuration files.
- A DLL that has no relationship to your printer model.
- A replacement that causes a different loader error.
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 is especially unreliable. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is primarily the 64-bit system directory, while printer components may be loaded from the DriverStore or another driver-specific location.
Recommended Free Tools
Use HP’s official model-specific installer instead. For Windows component repair, use Microsoft’s DISM and SFC procedures.
FAQ
Is hpbresw81.dll malware?
The filename is associated with legitimate HP printer-driver packages. A copy in a normal HP DriverStore location is more credible than one in a temporary or unrelated application folder. Check its signature and scan it if its location or origin is unexpected.
Can I download the DLL by itself?
You should not. The file belongs to a larger HP driver package, and an isolated copy may have the wrong architecture or revision. Reinstall the complete package for your exact printer.
Is hpbresw81.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an HP printer-driver component, not a standard Windows, DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ runtime DLL.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why does the error mention a program instead of a printer?
An HP helper, printer utility, startup process, or older application may be loading the driver component. Windows reports the component that failed, not necessarily the device that originally installed it.
Should I put it in System32?
No. The correct location is determined by the HP driver package and Windows DriverStore. Manually placing the file in System32 can create an architecture or version mismatch.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
There is no evidence that hpbresw81.dll is a Visual C++ runtime file. Reinstall the HP printer software first. Consider a runtime repair only if a separate application clearly reports a missing Microsoft runtime.
What if I no longer own the HP printer?
Remove the stale printer queue and related HP software. Restart Windows and check whether the error disappears. If no remaining HP device needs the package, reinstalling it may be unnecessary.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What information should I give support?
Collect:
- The exact error text.
- The full path shown in the message.
- The HP printer model.
- Your Windows version and system type.
- Whether printing or scanning is affected.
- The date the problem began.
- Recent Windows, HP driver, antivirus, or cleanup changes.
- Any Protection History detection.
- Whether reinstalling the official HP package completed successfully.
That information lets HP or Microsoft support distinguish a damaged printer package from a missing dependency, quarantine event, stale queue, or broader Windows servicing problem.
