- Look for HP entries.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location, if available.
- Record the program name and path before disabling it.
Check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type.
Use the HP driver package that matches the printer and your Windows installation. A legacy 32-bit HP component may not work simply because Windows is 64-bit, and copying a similarly named 64-bit DLL is not a valid conversion.
Inspect an existing copy
If a copy is present:
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32DriverStoreFileRepositoryin the address bar. - Search for
hpzevw72.dll. - Right-click the result and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- On Details, record the file description, company, and location.

- Remove the relevant HP software, such as a printer assistant or full-feature package.
- Restart Windows.
Next, use HP’s official printer drivers page. Search for the exact printer model and select the package for your Windows version and architecture. HP packages may contain a full-feature installation, a basic printing driver, scanning software, maintenance utilities, or updates.

Choose the full-feature package if you need scanning, printer maintenance, ink tools, or HP utilities. Choose a basic driver if you only need printing and the full HP software is causing startup errors.
During installation:
- Right-click the HP installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the connection instructions.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a Windows test page from Printers & scanners.
It worked if the HP software opens without the DLL error and a test page prints. If installation fails again, remove the printer and old HP software once more, restart the Print Spooler, restart Windows, and run the HP installer again. Do not delete folders inside DriverStoreFileRepository manually.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security may have removed or quarantined a printer component.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry referring to

Fix 4: Repair Windows components and the Driver Store
Use this step when the problem began after disk corruption, a failed update, or damage to Windows servicing components. These commands may not restore an HP third-party file, but they can repair Windows components that affect driver installation.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the HP printer package again.
Run DISM before SFC. Microsoft says DISM repairs the component source used by SFC, while SFC checks protected Windows files. The official procedure is documented in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
If either command reports that it could not complete, copy the exact result and continue with the HP package repair rather than repeatedly running the same commands.
The manual process of determining whether Windows components or a driver-store dependency changed can require repeated DISM and SFC runs without showing which third-party file is responsible. Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate if the error began immediately after an HP driver update, Windows update, software removal, or system migration.
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Restart Windows and test the printer.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs without normally removing personal documents. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore documentation.
After the rollback, install a compatible HP package rather than relying indefinitely on the older driver state.
Fix 6: Check Device Manager and Windows Features
Device Manager can reveal a failed or partially installed printer driver.

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers if the printer is connected by USB.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or an unknown device.
- Right-click the affected HP device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are intentionally removing the old HP package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the model-specific HP package.
Do not use Windows Features to enable a runtime for this DLL. Open Control Panel, select Programs, and select Turn Windows features on or off only to confirm that no optional Windows feature is relevant. Enabling .NET, legacy components, or other features is not supported by evidence for hpzevw72.dll and will not replace an incomplete HP driver package.

What not to do
Do not download the DLL by itself
Avoid random DLL download sites and standalone copies offered in search results. A replacement may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to a different HP package, or omit dependencies. If printing works but the warning remains
A startup-only warning can come from an obsolete HP helper rather than the active printer driver.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Remove unused HP printer utilities.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Check Startup apps and disable an obsolete HP entry.
- Check Task Scheduler for an HP task that points to a removed installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall only the HP software you still need.
Do not disable core Windows printer services. If you are unsure which executable is responsible, record its name and path first.
Information to collect if the error persists
Before contacting HP or Microsoft, record:
- Exact printer model
- Windows edition, version, build, and system type
- Full error text
- The executable or HP utility reporting the error
- The path where Windows expects or finds

No. Windows may be reporting a missing dependency or an incompatible component required by the DLL.
Will SFC restore it?
Usually not directly, because this is an HP third-party component. DISM and SFC are useful when Windows or the Driver Store may also be damaged, followed by an HP driver reinstall.
Is it safe to copy the file into System32?
No. A standalone copy can be malicious, incompatible, or unrelated to your printer package. Reinstall the complete signed HP package instead.
