The safe fix for hpzimc09.dll errors
hpzimc09.dll is an old Hewlett-Packard component named HP DeskJet Imaging DLL. It belongs to HP DeskJet printer software, not to Windows itself.

Before changing anything
Write down these details first:
- The exact printer model, including DeskJet, Officejet or Photosmart numbering
- Whether you use Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The complete error message
- The point at which the error appears: Windows startup, printing, scanning or HP installation
- Whether the problem began after uninstalling HP software, replacing a printer, restoring a backup, running disk cleanup or seeing an antivirus alert
To check your Windows version and architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read Windows specifications.
- Read System type under Device specifications.
A 32-bit HP application can use a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows. That does not mean the file belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The HP installer should place it in the application’s own folders.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete HP package
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely fix because the DLL is part of HP printer software. A failed uninstall, interrupted setup, incomplete backup restore or missing installation media can leave the main HP program without one of its imaging components.
Download the correct package
- Open HP’s official Software and Drivers printer portal.
- Enter the exact printer model.
- Select the detected or installed Windows version.
- Review the available downloads.
- Choose the full-feature, full-solution or similarly named HP package when one is available.
- Save the installer rather than launching it immediately.
HP describes its full-feature packages as including the core printer and scanner drivers plus additional printing and scanning software. For some older printers, HP may offer only a basic driver, an HP app or a Windows built-in driver.

Remove the broken installation first
If HP’s installer offers Repair, Remove or Uninstall, use that option. If it does not, remove the existing HP program from Windows:
- Press Windows + I.
- On Windows 11, select Apps > Installed apps.
On Windows 10, select Apps > Apps & features. - Search for the printer model or HP software.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the program on Windows 10.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the HP removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
For traditional desktop software:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the HP printer software.
- Right-click it.
- Select Repair, Change or Uninstall, depending on what is available.
- Restart Windows when finished.
If the printer is still listed afterward, remove its Windows printer entry:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Select the old HP printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
Do not delete random HP folders manually at this stage. The uninstaller may need them to remove services, queues and shared components cleanly.

- Locate the HP installer you downloaded.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Accept the HP license terms.
- Choose the connection type requested by the installer.
- Connect the USB cable only when the installer requests it, unless HP’s instructions for that model say otherwise.
- Allow the installation to finish.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Print a test page.
- Open the HP scanning software and test a scan if the printer supports scanning.
How to tell whether it worked
The error should no longer appear when the HP software starts. Printing should work through the newly installed printer queue, and scanning should open through the HP application or Windows scanning interface.
If the same message appears during installation, continue to Fix 2 rather than copying the DLL manually.
Fix 2: Repair the installed HP application
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Windows can repair some installed programs without removing their settings.
Windows 11
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the HP printer program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the HP program again.
If Repair is unavailable, select Reset only if you are prepared to lose the application’s stored settings. Reset availability varies by program.

For older desktop software:
- Press Windows + R.

If repair completes but hpzimc09.dll is still reported as missing, use the full uninstall and reinstall procedure in Fix 1. Repair cannot recreate every missing file in every program.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection History
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
If the HP software worked previously and the DLL suddenly disappeared, Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined it. An incomplete cleanup utility can also remove part of an old installation.
To check Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections and quarantined items.
- Look for an entry referring to the HP installation or
hpzimc09.dll.
Microsoft warns that restoring a malicious file can be dangerous. Restore or allow the file only when you can verify that it came from the trusted HP installation and is safe. If you cannot establish its origin, leave it quarantined and reinstall the complete package from HP instead.
After reinstalling, check whether your security software is blocking the installer or one of its files. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection just to force an old DLL into place. If the HP package is incompatible with your current Windows version, forcing individual files into the installation can make the result less reliable.

Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Sometimes the old full-feature HP package is no longer available for a particular printer and Windows version. In that case, use the newest package HP lists for the exact model. If HP provides only a basic driver, it may support printing without the older HP scanning or maintenance tools.
You can also let Windows search for a compatible printer driver:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches.
- If the printer is not found, select Add manually.
- Choose the connection method.
- Select the matching HP manufacturer and printer model if shown.
- Complete the wizard.
- Print a test page.
For a USB printer, connect it directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub. For a network printer, confirm that the computer and printer are on the same network.
Check Device Manager
Device Manager can show whether Windows has a driver or device-detection problem, but it will not normally repair a missing HP application DLL by itself.

- Look for the HP printer or a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.

If the device remains broken:
- Right-click the HP device in Device Manager.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect or re-add the printer.
- Install the matching HP package if one is available.
Do not uninstall unrelated devices merely because their names are unfamiliar.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to complete.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward, then retry the HP installation.
If DISM or SFC reports that it repaired files but the HP error remains, that result does not prove the HP DLL was repaired. Return to the exact-model HP package.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which Windows component changed rarely helps with a third-party printer file. Fix 6: Check optional Windows features only when the installer asks for one
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
There is no verified evidence that a Windows Feature is the normal source of hpzimc09.dll. Do not enable random features as a substitute for the HP package.
If the HP installer specifically reports that a Windows printing component is unavailable:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the requested feature.
- Enable only the feature named by the installer or HP documentation.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the HP installer again.
For older printers, the relevant compatibility option can vary by Windows release. If the installer does not identify a missing Windows feature, skip this step.
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that provide the registration entry point expected by the command, commonly DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that hpzimc09.dll is an ActiveX or COM registration DLL.
Running this command is therefore not a standard repair:
regsvr32 hpzimc09.dll
It may produce another error, and it does not restore the HP program’s missing dependencies, configuration or installer files. Reinstall the parent HP software instead.
Why downloading the DLL separately is a bad repair
Random DLL download pages can provide:
- A malicious or modified file
- The wrong historical build
- The wrong architecture
- A file intended for a different HP product
- A DLL with missing dependencies
- A file that is placed in the wrong folder
Even a genuine copy may not solve the problem. The HP installer could also be missing configuration files, language resources, printer drivers, scanning components or registry entries.
The safe sources are the official HP printer driver portal, original HP installation media from a trusted source and Windows’ own built-in driver system. If HP no longer lists a full package for the printer, use the basic or built-in driver when available, or contact HP support with the exact model and Windows version.

“The program cannot start because hpzimc09.dll is missing”
The HP application cannot find the file it expects. A damaged or incomplete HP installation is the leading explanation.
“The specified module could not be found”
This does not always mean that hpzimc09.dll itself is absent. Windows can display this wording when the DLL is present but one of its required dependencies is missing or incompatible.

The error appears during setup
The installer may be looking for a file from an older package, or a previous installation may be incomplete. Cancel the setup, remove the old HP software, restart Windows and run the correct full package as administrator.

If the installer still fails

- Add the printer and print a test page.
- Test scanning separately.
If printmanagement.msc is unavailable in your Windows edition, skip that step and remove the printer through Printers & scanners.
For an unsupported printer, reduced functionality may be unavoidable. Printing may work with a basic or built-in driver while HP’s older scanning utility does not. If the installer continues to request installation media, the original package may no longer be publicly listed. Contact HP support with the exact model, Windows version, installer name and full error text rather than substituting a similarly named DLL.
