hpzipr12.dll is an HP printer-driver file, not a general Windows runtime. The safest fix is to identify the HP printer package that installed it, remove the damaged package if necessary, and reinstall the matching driver from HP.
The 60-second answer
hpzipr12.dll is the PML Run-time library, a component of HP PmlRtl and HP’s older bidirectional printer-driver system. It helps HP software communicate with the printer and exchange device information.
It can be loaded during:
- Windows startup
- Print Spooler startup
- Printer installation
- Printing or scanning
- HP software removal
- Driver updates or migrations
The most reliable repair is:
- Identify the HP printer involved.
- Remove the affected printer and stale HP software.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the printer’s current Windows driver or full solution from HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page.
- Install it and restart again.
Do not download hpzipr12.dll by itself from a DLL repository. A standalone file may be malicious, may be the wrong architecture, or may not include the other HP files and services that the driver needs.
What hpzipr12.dll does
The file’s embedded description is “PML Run-time library.” It is associated with HP PmlRtl, Bidi User Mode components, and the Pml Driver HPZ12 family.

“Bidirectional” means that the driver can send information to the printer and receive information back. Besides sending a print job, the driver may query the printer for capabilities, configuration, status, and device information.
That makes hpzipr12.dll part of an HP printer-driver family rather than a Windows component. It is not normally installed with Windows 10 or Windows 11, and it is not a standard Microsoft runtime.
It is also not evidence of a missing:
- Visual C++ Redistributable
- DirectX installation
- .NET installation
- Windows gaming component
Older HP packages can contain several related files, and the exact files, versions, architecture, and installation location vary by printer model and driver generation. Do not assume that every HP printer uses this file.
Why the error appears
A damaged or incomplete HP driver installation
This is the most common explanation when the message appears while installing a printer, starting the Print Spooler, or printing.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

HP software was removed incompletely
Removing an HP application does not always remove every printer queue, driver package, service, or startup reference. Windows may continue trying to load an old HP component even though the main HP software is gone.
A Windows upgrade migrated an old driver
A Windows feature upgrade or driver migration can retain an older HP bidirectional component while replacing another part of the driver. The result can be a mismatched set of files.
Windows Security quarantined the file
Security software may quarantine a driver component. The filename alone does not prove whether a particular copy is safe. Check its location, digital signature, and installation source before restoring anything.
The wrong architecture or dependency is being used
Some historical HP packages included 32-bit components. A 32-bit printer driver can work on 64-bit Windows when installed through a compatible package, but manually mixing 32-bit and 64-bit files can cause loader errors.
Also, “the specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by hpzipr12.dll is missing. Replacing only the named DLL does not repair that dependency chain.

Fix 1: Reinstall the correct HP printer package
This is the primary fix.
Step 1: Identify the printer
Check the printer name in the error context, on the physical device, or in Windows:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Review the installed printers.
- Note the exact HP model name.
If several HP printers are listed, start with the one installed or updated most recently. Also consider printers that were recently removed, because their queues or driver packages may remain.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Step 2: Remove the affected printer
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Click Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
Restart Windows before reinstalling the driver.
Step 3: Download the driver from HP
Open HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page and enter the exact printer model. Select the installed Windows version if HP does not detect it automatically.
Prefer the package labelled:
- Full Solution
- Full Feature Software and Driver
- Model-specific printer driver
HP’s full packages normally include the driver, installer, and related administrative components. If HP provides only a basic driver for the model, use that package instead of searching for the DLL separately.
Step 4: Install the package
- Right-click the downloaded HP installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installation wizard.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Allow the installer to create the printer queue.
- Restart Windows after installation.
How to tell whether it worked
Print a test page:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Choose Printer properties.
- Select Print Test Page.
The repair worked if the test page prints and the hpzipr12.dll message does not return during startup, printing, or spooler activity.
If the installer reports that the printer already exists, remove the old queue and continue with the stale-driver cleanup in Fix 6.
When you are manually comparing HP packages and guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Reinstalling the exact HP printer package remains the definitive fix for this HP-specific file.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
If the file disappeared after a security scan, inspect Protection History before restoring anything.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand any detection associated with the HP printer software.
- Review the file path, detection name, and action taken.
Microsoft advises caution when restoring quarantined files because a restored threat may be detected again. See Microsoft’s Protection History documentation.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- It came from the official HP printer installer.
- The path matches the HP driver installation.
- The file has a valid HP digital signature, where applicable.
- You are confident the detection is a false positive.
The safer choice is usually to reinstall the complete driver from HP. That replaces the missing file and its related dependencies without manually approving an isolated DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
After reinstalling, run a full Windows Security scan. If the file is quarantined again, do not keep restoring it. Remove the HP package and obtain a newer driver from HP.

Fix 3: Install the correct driver for your Windows architecture
Do not choose a replacement DLL based only on its filename.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
Windows may report a 64-bit operating system and an x64-based processor. Older printer packages may still contain 32-bit components that Windows loads through the correct driver framework.
The safe rule is:
- Let the HP installer select the correct files.
- Use the package listed for your printer and Windows version.
- Do not copy a 32-bit DLL over a 64-bit file.
- Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit HP package.
- Do not place the file manually in
System32,SysWOW64, or an application folder.
If HP no longer provides a full package for the printer, Windows may offer an inbox driver or a Microsoft IPP/class driver. These can provide basic printing, although advanced HP features may not be available.
Fix 4: Repair the Windows component store and system files
Because hpzipr12.dll is an HP driver file, System File Checker is not the first repair to use. SFC is designed primarily to check protected Windows system files, not to reconstruct a third-party printer package.
Use DISM and SFC when the DLL error is accompanied by broader Windows problems, such as failed updates, damaged built-in applications, or multiple unrelated system-file errors.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window while the operation is running.
Microsoft describes DISM as a tool for repairing the Windows image. More details are available in Microsoft’s Repair a Windows Image documentation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.
Microsoft documents SFC in its System File Checker reference.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows system files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: review the broader Windows repair state and reinstall the HP driver again afterward.
Do not expect SFC to restore hpzipr12.dll merely because the filename ends in .dll. If the HP package is missing, reinstall the HP package.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 unless the DLL is a self-registering component
Running this command is usually inappropriate:
regsvr32 hpzipr12.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE and ActiveX DLLs that expose a DllRegisterServer entry point. A printer runtime or helper DLL is not automatically a COM registration server.
If you try to register a DLL that does not provide that entry point, Windows may report that the module loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found.
Microsoft explains the tool and its errors in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guide.
Reinstall the HP driver instead. The installer registers the driver and services in the way that package requires.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 6: Remove stale HP queues and driver packages
Use this fix when the error appears on every boot or returns after reinstalling.
Remove old printer queues
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Remove every obsolete HP printer that is no longer used.
Then restart the Print Spooler:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it.
- Select Restart.
Remove an old driver package
On editions that provide the interface:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
printui /s /t2
- Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Select the obsolete HP driver.
- Click Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Restart Windows.
If the driver is currently in use, remove its printer queues first and restart the Print Spooler before trying again.
After cleanup, install only the current driver for the HP printer you still use. If the printer has been retired, removing the obsolete HP software is preferable to restoring a DLL that no active device needs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Use Device Manager only for the device driver
Device Manager can help when Windows has detected the printer but the driver is malfunctioning.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on how the printer connects.
- Right-click the affected HP device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver software.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current HP package.
Do not use Device Manager to replace hpzipr12.dll manually. Its purpose here is to remove the device and associated driver instance so the correct package can be installed cleanly.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
Standalone DLL downloads are risky because the file may contain malware, belong to a different HP driver generation, or use the wrong architecture. Even a genuine copy may not fix the missing dependency, service registration, printer queue, or driver-store entry causing the error.

Use the official HP driver selector or a Windows-provided printer driver instead.
Do not copy the file into System32
Manual copying can create version mismatches, bypass installer checks, and leave Windows with a driver that is not properly registered. It can also place a 32-bit component where a different architecture is expected.
Do not use registry cleaners
A registry cleaner does not rebuild the HP driver package and can remove entries that the printer installer needs.
If the error continues after reinstalling
Check which process is reporting the error.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
eventvwr.msc
- Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs.
- Check Application and System around the time of the error.
- Note whether the process is
spoolsv.exe, an HP installer, an HP service, or another application.
Then take the matching action:
- If it is
spoolsv.exe, remove stale queues and driver packages, restart Print Spooler, and reinstall the driver. - If it is an HP installer or service, remove the incomplete HP software and run the current installer as administrator.
- If it occurs only when launching an old HP utility, remove or reinstall that utility.
- If the printer is no longer used, uninstall the obsolete HP software instead of restoring the file.
- If it started immediately after a driver change and no current package works, System Restore may be considered as a rollback, but it is not the first-line repair.
FAQ
Is hpzipr12.dll a Windows file?
Generally no. It is an HP printer-driver component associated with HP PmlRtl and older bidirectional printing components.
Is hpzipr12.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot establish that. Verify the file’s location, digital signature, and source. A copy installed by an official HP printer package is different from an unexplained copy in a temporary or unrelated application folder.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no evidence that this file is a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET component. Repair the HP printer software first.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I register it with regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies to self-registering DLLs with DllRegisterServer. Reinstall the complete HP driver instead.
Will SFC restore the file?
Usually no. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Since hpzipr12.dll is associated with HP software, the HP installer is the appropriate source.
Why does the error remain after I removed the printer?
A stale printer queue, driver package, startup entry, or HP service may still reference the file. Remove obsolete queues and driver packages, restart the Print Spooler, and restart Windows.
Is a 32-bit HP driver valid on 64-bit Windows?
It can be, when supplied and installed through a compatible HP package. Do not mix individual 32-bit and 64-bit files manually.

What is the safest source for the file?
The safest source is the complete, model-specific HP printer package for your Windows version. Do not obtain hpzipr12.dll separately.
