- Copy the complete error text.
- Note whether it appears during startup, while printing, or when installing an old printer.
- If the message includes a path, record it.
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Write down every HP printer listed.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for entries containing HP, DeskJet, ** printer, or HP Smart**.
- Check whether the problem began after removing a printer, running disk cleanup, installing an update, or receiving an antivirus alert.
The exact printer model matters. Public information associates the filename with HP DeskJet software, but it does not establish one exact compatible model. A newer HP package may not contain an old print-monitor component, so choosing a random DeskJet driver is not a reliable repair.
Fix 2: Repair the installed HP printer software
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If an HP program is still installed, repair it before removing it.
- Press
Windows + I. - Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the HP printer application or driver package.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Try printing again or repeat the action that produced the error.
If there is no Repair option, open the program’s own maintenance or setup utility and look for Repair, Reinstall, or Install printer.
A successful repair should remove the startup message and leave the printer available under Printers & scanners. If the error returns, continue with a clean reinstall rather than copying hpzlnt06.dll manually.

Fix 3: Remove the old HP package and install the exact driver
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged HP component.
First remove the old software:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the HP printer application or package associated with the affected printer.
- If it is not listed there, open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Uninstall the relevant HP software.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the old HP printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
Then download the driver from HP’s official printer support page. Search using the exact printer model and select the package for your Windows version. During installation:
- Disconnect the printer if the installer requests it.
- Run the installer normally, or right-click it and choose Run as administrator if setup cannot write files.
- Follow the connection instructions for USB or network printing.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > your printer > Print test page.
If the current HP package installs successfully but the old hpzlnt06.dll message remains, an older HP component may still be registered. Do not assume that installing a different DeskJet model’s software will restore it.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the HP printer software or
hpzlnt06.dll. - Expand a detection to view its path and action.
- Do not restore the file merely because its name looks familiar.
- If the file came from an old or unknown location, leave it quarantined and reinstall the printer software from HP.

- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Remove printers that are no longer used.

- Uninstall matching HP software.
- Restart the Print Spooler:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Right-click Print Spooler.
- Select Restart.
Windows historically registered this component as an HP print monitor under a path similar to:

That does not mean you should delete the registry key immediately. Removing a print-monitor entry incorrectly can disrupt the spooler or other printers.

If the stale reference remains:
- Create a restore point or export the relevant registry key first.
- Confirm that the HP printer and its software are no longer needed.
- Consult HP or Microsoft support before changing print-monitor registry entries.
- Do not delete unrelated monitor entries.
A clean startup with working printers indicates that the stale reference was the cause. If the Print Spooler stops or printers disappear, restore the backup and seek support.
Fix 6: Check the file if it still exists
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A file can exist while Windows still reports that its module cannot be loaded.
If the error provides a path, open it in File Explorer. If not, search the likely old printer-software locations, but do not move or replace the file.

SFC and DISM repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They do not normally restore a third-party HP printer DLL. Use them when you also have Windows crashes, damaged system files, update failures, or multiple unrelated components failing.

- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the printer again.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the original action. If it reports that it could not repair everything, review the result and continue with HP software repair. Do not repeatedly run these commands expecting them to recreate hpzlnt06.dll.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use System Restore if the error began immediately after a driver change, Windows update, cleanup operation, or software removal and a suitable restore point exists.

- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore.
- Let Windows restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. Afterward, check the printer and reinstall the current HP package if necessary.
Why manual DLL fixes usually fail
Do not download hpzlnt06.dll from a DLL repository and copy it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder.
That approach can fail because:
- The copy may be malicious or modified.
- The file may be the wrong version.
- The file may have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
