hpzscr07.dll is a legacy component associated with HP DeskJet printer software. If Windows reports that hpzscr07.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the dependable fix is to restore the complete HP printer installation rather than download the DLL by itself.

- The complete error text.
- The program or executable displaying it.
- The folder path shown in the message, if any.
- The exact HP printer model.
- Whether the problem began after uninstalling HP software, upgrading Windows, updating a driver, running disk cleanup, restoring an old system image, or an antivirus quarantine.
If the error appears on a computer that no longer has an HP printer, an incomplete HP uninstall is still possible. A file with an HP-like name in an unusual folder should not automatically be trusted.
1. Identify the HP printer and remove the broken queue
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Start with the printer model. Check the label on the printer, the existing printer queue, or Windows settings.
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Open each HP printer entry and note its model.
- Select the affected printer.
- Choose Remove.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Choose Remove device.
You can also check the old Control Panel interface:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Right-click the HP printer and choose Remove device.
Do not remove the printer if you still need to record its model. Multiple DeskJet models can use similarly named HPZ components, so the exact model matters.
If the printer is connected by USB, disconnect it after removing the queue. If it is connected over Wi-Fi, leave it powered on but do not add it again until the driver repair is complete.
2. Uninstall the old HP software
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A damaged HP installation can leave behind a queue, helper program, or driver reference that continues looking for hpzscr07.dll.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- In Programs and Features, look for entries containing HP, Hewlett-Packard, DeskJet, or the printer model.
- Uninstall the relevant HP printer software.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove unrelated HP applications if you cannot establish that they belong to the printer. If the uninstaller is missing or fails, continue with the printer removal and reinstall steps rather than trying to delete individual DLLs.

After restarting, check whether the original error appears before reinstalling the printer. If it does, record which executable raises it. That information can identify a leftover HP utility or startup entry.

Use HP’s official printer support site and search for the exact model. Do not search for hpzscr07.dll as the primary download. Search for the printer name, such as the full DeskJet model and series.
The installation sequence is usually:
- Open HP’s official Printers driver and software support page.
- Enter the exact printer model.
- Select the installed Windows version when HP asks.
- Download the available full-feature, basic, or model-specific driver.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Disconnect or leave the printer disconnected if the installer requests it.
- Follow the connection instructions.
- Restart Windows when installation completes.
- Print a Windows test page.
If HP offers only a basic driver, use it. If the model is listed as supported through a Windows in-box driver, do not force an old full-feature package onto a newer Windows installation.
For a driver-only reinstall, open Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected HP entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If shown, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the model-specific driver.
A 64-bit Windows installation can still use a 32-bit legacy HP driver. Do not infer the required architecture from the DLL name. Use the package offered for your Windows version and printer model.
Manually hunting through old driver versions can be slow, especially when Windows lists several similar printer packages. For an old DeskJet, Windows may have a suitable in-box driver even when HP no longer provides a modern package.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to find the printer.
- If it does not appear, select Add manually.
- Choose the connection type.
- Select the printer from the available list.
- Allow Windows Update to populate additional driver choices if prompted.
- Complete the wizard.
- Open the printer properties and print a test page.
The in-box driver may provide printing without the older HP utility suite or advanced status features. That is often preferable when the original DeskJet package is incompatible with current Windows.
4. Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
If hpzscr07.dll disappeared from an HP installation folder after an antivirus scan, check whether it was quarantined.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection that references the HP installation folder or the DLL.
- Confirm the original path and the program that created it.
Restore the file only if all of the following are true:

- It came from a legitimate HP installation.
- The path is consistent with the installed HP software.
- You have confirmed the detection is a false positive.
- You are going to repair or reinstall the complete driver package immediately.
Do not restore or allow a copy downloaded from a DLL website. Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again unless it is explicitly allowed. A clean reinstall is safer than restoring a lone file.
5. Remove stale printer drivers and queues
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A failed uninstall can leave an old driver package that keeps calling a missing HP component.
First, remove every obsolete HP queue:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Remove unused HP printers.
- Restart Windows.
Then inspect the installed printer drivers:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Devices and Printers.
- Select a printer, if necessary.
- Select Print server properties.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select an obsolete HP driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Restart Windows.
Some Windows editions include Print Management:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
printmanagement.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Print Servers.
- Expand the local computer.
- Select Drivers.
- Remove the stale HP package.
If Print Management is unavailable, use the Control Panel method instead. Do not delete random files from System32, SysWOW64, or the Windows driver store.
6. Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
hpzscr07.dll is not known to be a protected Windows component. SFC normally will not recreate it. Use DISM and SFC only when Windows Update, other applications, or multiple system components are also failing.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the HP driver installation.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows component source used by SFC. If DISM cannot find repair files, Microsoft documents using a matching repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
The repair source must match the installed Windows version and edition. Do not substitute an arbitrary Windows folder.

7. Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver update, HP installation, Windows change, or other software installation and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace a missing HP driver package permanently. Afterward, install the correct printer software or Windows in-box driver again if necessary.
Why downloading the DLL is the wrong fix
Do not download hpzscr07.dll from a random DLL site and copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An application folder
- An HP installation folder
That approach can provide malware, the wrong file, the wrong architecture, or a file from an unrelated package. It can also leave missing INF files, registry entries, services, helper programs, and other HP components untouched.
There is no evidence that hpzscr07.dll belongs in either Windows system directory. The correct copy, if required, must come from the complete printer installation that originally supplied it.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It does not reinstall a printer driver or repair a missing dependency. There is no public evidence that this file is a self-registering COM DLL.

The in-box driver may support basic printing but not scanning, ink-level reporting, wireless setup, or HP-specific utilities. If the printer remains unsupported, replacing it may be more practical than restoring legacy software.
