You may instead see “hporsu05.dll was not found,” “Error loading hporsu05.dll,” or “The specified module could not be found.” The file is associated with an old Hewlett-Packard printing package, not with Windows itself. The reliable fix is to identify the HP printer software requesting it and repair or reinstall that package.
Which fix applies to you
- The error names an HP printer utility: reinstall the software for that exact printer model from HP.
- The error appears immediately after signing in: remove the obsolete HP startup entry or reinstall the package before removing it cleanly.
- The file disappeared suddenly: check Windows Security Protection history for quarantine or deletion.
- The printer still works but an old utility does not: remove the obsolete utility and use the Windows printer driver if available.
- Several Windows components also fail: run DISM followed by SFC.
- The printer is old and has no current driver: try Windows’ built-in printer driver or replace the unsupported device.
- You found a replacement DLL online: do not copy it into
System32orSysWOW64. That often leaves the underlying installation problem untouched and can introduce unsafe code.
What hporsu05.dll belongs to
hporsu05.dll is reported as a 32-bit component of HP Printing System for Windows, specifically RS Utilities for HP DeskJet Printing System for Windows. Public file databases report an old version and small file size, but those details are third-party metadata rather than a current HP specification.
It is not a normal Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET file. The exact HP printer model cannot be identified from the filename alone. Current HP documentation also does not confirm that this exact legacy DLL is included in a currently downloadable package.

#1 Best Overall
The error usually means one of these things:
- An old HP printer installation is damaged or incomplete.
- HP software was removed while a startup item or scheduled component remained.
- Antivirus software quarantined the DLL.
- A legacy 32-bit driver or utility is incompatible with modern Windows.
- The DLL exists, but another dependency that it needs is missing.
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows can show that message when a dependency cannot be loaded.
Identify the program requesting the file
Before changing anything, find the application or service that launches the failing file.
Read the complete error
Note the executable or program name shown in the dialog. It may identify an HP utility, printer monitor, status application, or installation component.
If the message appears only during sign-in and does not name a program, continue with the startup checks below.
Check Startup apps
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries containing HP, Hewlett-Packard, DeskJet, Printer, or a familiar old printer utility.
- Right-click a likely entry and choose Open file location if available.
- Record the program path and publisher.
- If the entry clearly belongs to an obsolete HP installation, right-click it and choose Disable.
Restart Windows. If the error disappears, the startup component was orphaned or incomplete. Disabling it stops the message, but uninstalling the related HP software is the cleaner long-term fix.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for HP, Hewlett-Packard, or the printer model.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Apps & features.
- Search for HP printer software.
You can also press Win + R, enter appwiz.cpl, and press Enter to open Programs and Features.
Write down the printer model and the names of installed HP packages before uninstalling anything.

Check services and Event Viewer
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
services.mscand press Enter. - Look for HP- or printer-related services.
- Double-click a service to inspect its executable path.
For more detail:
- Right-click Start and choose Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs, then Application.
- Look for an error at the time the DLL message appeared.
- Check the Faulting application name and Faulting module name.
Do not delete a service merely because its name contains HP. Confirm that it belongs to the obsolete printer package.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the matching HP package
This is the most likely solution.
Remove the damaged package
If the printer software is still listed:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the HP printer package.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If the package is not listed, remove only the orphaned startup entry after confirming its file path. Do not remove random DLLs manually.
Install the correct driver
- Identify the exact printer model from the printer label or Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Open HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page.
- Search for that model.
- Select your installed Windows version.
- Download the available full-feature, full-solution, or printer-specific package.
- Run the installer.
- If Windows blocks the installer, right-click it, choose Properties, select Unblock if shown, then choose Apply.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Follow the connection instructions.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
HP may provide only an in-box Windows driver for an older device. In that case, use the Windows driver rather than forcing an old utility package to run.
What success looks like
The startup message should be gone, the HP utility should open normally, and the printer should appear under Printers & scanners without a warning icon.
If the same message returns after reinstalling, the installer may not support your Windows version, or a remaining startup component may point to an obsolete path. Disable that orphaned entry and use the built-in printer driver if printing still works.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security Protection history
Antivirus quarantine is a realistic cause if the file worked previously and then disappeared.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the error began.
- Expand any entry referring to HP software or
hporsu05.dll.
Restore the file only if you can verify that it came from a trusted, authentic HP installation and the detection is demonstrably a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring an unsafe file can expose the computer.

The safer choice is usually to reinstall the HP package from HP rather than restoring an isolated DLL. If you suspect tampering, run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan before reinstalling.
Fix 3: Remove an obsolete startup component
If the error appears only at login and you no longer use the HP printer:
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Disable the confirmed HP entry.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove the related HP application from Settings > Apps or Programs and Features.
If the entry is not visible in Task Manager, check Task Scheduler:
- Press Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for a task clearly associated with the old HP printer software.
- Inspect its Actions tab.
- Disable the task if its executable path points to removed HP software.
Do not disable generic Windows tasks or delete a task without checking its action path.
Fix 4: Try Windows’ built-in printer driver
For an older printer, Windows may support printing without the original HP utility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices on Windows 11, or Devices on Windows 10.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to search.
- Choose the printer if it appears.
- Follow the installation prompts.
If Windows cannot find it, select the option to add the printer manually and follow the displayed connection choices. A built-in driver may support basic printing but not scanning, ink-level monitoring, or special HP features.
Fix 5: Check the driver architecture
The reported hporsu05.dll file is 32-bit. That does not automatically make it unusable on 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit application can normally load a 32-bit DLL under 64-bit Windows, but an old installer or printer utility may not work correctly with modern Windows components.

Check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Find System type.
Use the HP package specifically offered for your Windows version and printer model. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the 64-bit system directory, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. Neither directory is a general-purpose location for third-party application DLLs.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are appropriate when Windows itself shows multiple corruption symptoms, update failures, or unrelated system-file errors. They are unlikely to recreate a missing third-party HP DLL.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the affected application again. If the HP error remains, return to the HP package repair steps. These commands repair Windows components, not normally the missing contents of an old printer installation.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what needs attention; the free scan identifies problems, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the HP application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.

regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly ActiveX or COM components. There is no verified evidence that hporsu05.dll is such a component.
Running:
regsvr32 hporsu05.dll
will not repair a missing HP installation. If Windows reports that the entry point is missing, that is normal for many helper DLLs. Do not register the file unless official documentation for the exact HP package specifically instructs you to do so.

Do not download hporsu05.dll from a DLL repository, file-sharing page, forum attachment, or “DLL fixer” utility. A replacement may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, be the wrong version, or depend on other missing files. It can also conceal a damaged installation that will fail again.
Use HP’s model-specific driver page, Windows Update, or Windows’ built-in printer driver instead.

If the printer is obsolete
If HP no longer provides software for the printer and Windows cannot supply a usable driver:
- Remove the old HP package.
- Disable its orphaned startup or scheduled components.
- Try the built-in Windows printer driver.
- Keep the printer only if it works reliably with basic functions.
- Replace it if essential features require unsupported legacy software.
System Restore is a fallback after a recent driver or software change. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, select System Restore, and choose a restore point from before the problem began. Restoration can roll back applications, settings, and updates.

FAQ
Is hporsu05.dll part of Windows?
No reliable evidence indicates that it is. It is associated with legacy HP DeskJet printing software.
Can the exact printer model be identified from the filename?
No. Check the erroring program, installed HP applications, printer settings, and Event Viewer.
Is hporsu05.dll 32-bit?
Reported file metadata identifies it as Win32, or 32-bit. Use the correct HP package for the printer and Windows version rather than copying the file manually.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. That can create version conflicts and does not restore the owning HP application or its dependencies.
Why does the error say the module cannot be found when the DLL exists?
A required dependency may be missing, or the application may be loading the wrong copy or an incompatible legacy component.
Will DISM or SFC restore it?
Usually not. They repair Windows components. Reinstall the HP printer package to restore an application-owned file.
Can I register it with regsvr32?
Not as a routine fix. There is no verified indication that this DLL is a self-registering COM component.
What is the safest permanent fix?
Identify the printer model, remove the damaged HP software, and install the matching package from HP. If that package is no longer supported, use the Windows in-box driver or replace the obsolete printer.
