hrtzres.dll is a legacy Microsoft file associated with Zone.com and MSN Gaming Zone. If hrtzres.dll is missing, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the specific Zone.com game or application that requests it, not to copy a downloaded DLL into System32.

What is hrtzres.dll?
hrtzres.dll is a 32-bit Win32 application DLL described in historical file metadata as a Zone data file. It is associated with Zone.com, formerly known through MSN Gaming Zone, and carries Microsoft Corporation publisher metadata.
Reported historical metadata identifies the file as:

| Description | Zone data file |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Architecture | 32-bit |

| Size | About 1.12 MB |
Those version and size details describe an old file record, not a current Microsoft-supported download package.
The strongest historical path evidence places the file under the application directory:
C:Program FilesMSN Gaming ZoneWindowsHrtzres.dll
That is different from a normal Windows component stored in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. That naming is confusing, but it does not mean an old application DLL should be copied into either folder. hrtzres.dll normally belongs with the legacy program that loads it.
What the error messages mean
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because hrtzres.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because hrtzres.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading hrtzres.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because hrtzres.dll was not found.”
- “hrtzres.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The first two usually mean the application cannot find the file in its expected installation directory.
“Could not be loaded” can mean either that hrtzres.dll is missing or that another dependency required by the DLL is missing. Restoring the named file alone may not solve that variant.
“Not designed to run on Windows” or “bad image” generally points to a damaged, incomplete, incompatible, or incorrect copy. A replacement from a different source may have the wrong architecture or contents.
These messages do not prove that the file belongs to Windows itself. They identify the file the application loader was trying to use.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the parent program
This is the most likely and safest fix.
Find the program that requests the file
If the error appears from a shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
If the shortcut is not available:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Start the affected game or application until the error appears.
- If the process remains visible, right-click it.
- Select Open file location.
You can also inspect Event Viewer:
- Press Win+R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time the program failed.
- Check the Faulting application name and Faulting module name fields.
Event Viewer may not name hrtzres.dll, but it can identify the executable or installation folder that matters.
Use the program’s repair option
On Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its menu button or entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
Microsoft does not provide a modern repair entry for every old application. If Repair is unavailable, do not treat that as a Windows failure.
For older Zone.com or MSN Gaming Zone software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected game or application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original installer or trusted installation media.
If the installer offers a destination folder, use the program’s original location. Do not manually create a replacement copy in System32.
A successful repair should restore the application files and allow the program to start. If the same error returns immediately, check antivirus quarantine before reinstalling repeatedly.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
An old application file may have been quarantined because it is obsolete, packed, unsigned, or altered. A quarantine event can be a false positive, but it can also indicate that the copy on disk is unsafe.
To inspect the history:
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections recorded near the time the application stopped working.
- Expand any entry that identifies the affected program or
hrtzres.dll.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are met:
- The program came from trusted original media.
- The installation folder is the expected one.
- You understand why Windows Security flagged the file.
- A current scan does not identify the restored file as malicious.
If the file came from a random DLL download website, do not restore it or add an exclusion. Remove the untrusted copy and reinstall the parent application from trusted original media instead.
After restoring a trusted file:
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application.
- If it is quarantined again, stop restoring it.
- Run a full scan.
- Treat the application or installer as potentially altered or unsupported.
Fix 3: Reinstall from the original media
For an old game or MSN Gaming Zone component, a clean reinstall is often more reliable than replacing one file.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Before uninstalling, confirm that you have:
- The original installer or installation disc
- Any required product key or account information
- Saved games or configuration files that need to be backed up
- The application’s current installation path
Then:
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as an administrator if required.
- Accept the original installation location unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Start the application once installation finishes.
If the installer was copied from another computer, verify that the entire installer and its supporting files were copied. An incomplete setup package can omit application resources.
A successful reinstall should place hrtzres.dll beside the legacy program files that need it. If the installer finishes but the file is immediately absent, inspect Protection history and the installation folder before trying another repair.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
hrtzres.dll is reported as a 32-bit file. That is normal for software from the MSN Gaming Zone era.
A 64-bit edition of Windows can normally run many 32-bit applications through its compatibility subsystem. You should not solve this by copying the DLL to a system folder.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
If the program is old and fails after the file has been restored:
- Right-click the application’s executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try an older Windows version appropriate to the software’s era.
- Select Apply.
- Start the application.
Do not select compatibility settings randomly if the program’s installer itself fails. In that case, run the installer with administrator permissions or use an older supported environment, such as a virtual machine, if you have a legitimate copy of the software.
If Windows is 32-bit, it cannot run 64-bit programs, but that is not a reason to obtain a different hrtzres.dll. Restore the file that belongs to the same application package.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when symptoms are broader
SFC and DISM are useful when Windows itself is damaged. They are not normally the direct repair for an old DLL installed under an application folder.
Use this step when:
- Windows reports missing system files
- Several unrelated programs fail
- Windows features cannot start
- Updates or built-in applications are also malfunctioning
- The error began after broader disk or system corruption
First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish and test the affected application.
Microsoft documents DISM as a repair tool for the Windows component store and SFC as a checker for protected Windows system files. Neither command normally restores an old application DLL that belongs in a Zone.com installation directory.
If you prefer assistance while checking system health manually, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair requires the full version. For this specific file, reinstalling the affected Zone.com program remains the definitive fix.
Check Windows Features only when the error points there
Windows Features do not normally install hrtzres.dll, but checking them can help if the old program depends on a legacy Windows component.
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review features such as .NET Framework entries.
- Enable a feature only when the application’s documentation or error specifically requires it.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable unrelated features as a general DLL repair. Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET are separate technologies, and there is no verified current Microsoft package identifying hrtzres.dll as one of their files.

Install Visual C++ only if the error also names runtime files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. Install a DirectX component only when the game specifically reports a missing DirectX file. Neither package is a verified source for hrtzres.dll.
Fix 6: Check disk, malware, and restore options
If the file disappeared after cleanup software ran, a malware removal, or a disk problem, investigate the cause rather than repeatedly replacing it.
Recommended Free Tools
Run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
If you suspect an active infection, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same Scan options screen. Save your work first because Windows will restart.
If other files are disappearing or applications report disk errors:
- Check available disk space.
- Review drive health using the computer manufacturer’s diagnostic tools.
- Back up important files.
- Avoid repeated reinstall attempts until the storage problem is understood.
System Restore may help if the file vanished after a recent installation, update, or cleanup operation and a suitable restore point exists:
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Test the affected program after Windows restarts.
System Restore does not guarantee that an unsupported legacy application will work on current Windows. It is a rollback option, not a replacement for the original installer.

A graphics or sound driver does not normally provide hrtzres.dll. Do not update drivers simply because this DLL is missing.
Check drivers when the application also shows graphics initialization failures, sound errors, display problems, or Device Manager warnings:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or another relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider and status.
- Select Update Driver if a legitimate driver update is available.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
You can also use Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates to review driver updates supplied through Windows Update. Prefer the computer or hardware manufacturer’s official driver source when one is available.
Manually checking dozens of hardware versions is tedious when the real issue is unrelated to the driver. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, with the free scan showing what it finds and driver installation requiring the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the Zone.com application when that application owns the missing DLL.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is not a generic DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
A private resource or data DLL used by an application generally does not need registration. Running a command such as:
regsvr32 hrtzres.dll
is unlikely to restore the file, rebuild its dependencies, or repair the parent program. It may produce an error stating that the entry point is missing.
Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation specifically says that the DLL is an ActiveX or COM component that must be registered. There is no verified evidence that hrtzres.dll requires that treatment.
Do not download hrtzres.dll from random sites
Avoid DLL download websites and generic DLL download sites utilities. A downloaded replacement can:
- Contain malware or unwanted modifications
- Have the wrong version
- Have the wrong architecture
- Be missing related files
- Cause a “bad image” error
- Hide the fact that the parent application is damaged
- Be deleted again by antivirus because its provenance is unknown
There is no verified current Microsoft redistributable specifically containing hrtzres.dll. The safe sources are the original Zone.com or MSN Gaming Zone installation media, a trusted backup of that installation, or a legitimate application repair process.
Do not copy a replacement into both System32 and `SysWOW64. Do not add broad antivirus exclusions to make the program launch.
If reinstalling does not work
A persistent error after reinstalling usually points to one of these conditions:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Antivirus removes the file again.
- The installer is incomplete or damaged.
- The application is being installed to a different path than the shortcut expects.
- The DLL has a missing dependency.
- The software is no longer compatible with current Windows.
- The copied program is not an authentic or complete installation.
Check the shortcut target again and confirm that the executable and its supporting files are in the same expected application tree. Review Protection history. Then test the program in its original supported environment if one is available.
If no trusted installer exists, the safest conclusion may be that the legacy software cannot be reliably repaired on the current system. Do not keep replacing the DLL from unverified sources.
Frequently asked questions
Is hrtzres.dll a Windows system file?
It is associated with Microsoft’s historical Zone.com and MSN Gaming Zone software, but it is not normally a modern Windows system component. It should generally remain with the application that installed it.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. The strongest path evidence places it under the MSN Gaming Zone application directory. Copying it to System32 or SysWOW64 can create conflicts and does not repair the parent program.
Does Visual C++ install hrtzres.dll?
There is no verified evidence that it does. Install Visual C++ only when the error names a Visual C++ runtime file such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll.
Does DirectX or .NET fix this file?
Not normally. Those are separate components. Use them only when the application reports a missing DirectX or .NET dependency.
Can I run regsvr32 on hrtzres.dll?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose a registration entry point. It does not restore a missing application file or repair its dependencies.
Does SFC restore hrtzres.dll?
Normally no. SFC checks protected Windows system files. It does not usually restore a legacy DLL installed inside an application directory.
Can 64-bit Windows run this 32-bit DLL?
A 64-bit Windows installation can often run 32-bit applications. Restore the file from the same application installer, and do not move it into a Windows system folder.
What if antivirus quarantined it?
Review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore it only when the original installation and file provenance are trusted. Otherwise reinstall the program from trusted media.
Why does the error return after reinstalling?
The file may be quarantined again, the installer may be incomplete, or the surrounding legacy software may no longer work correctly on current Windows. Check the installation path, antivirus history, dependencies, and compatibility before attempting another DLL replacement.
