Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record:
- The exact program or executable named in the error
- Whether the message appears at startup, after an update, or during one specific task
- The complete error text, such as “httpprxp.dll was not found” or “The program can’t start because httpprxp.dll is missing from your computer”
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether
httpprxp.dllexists in%SystemRoot%System32
httpprxp.dll is a Microsoft Windows system component. It is associated with networking and RPC proxy functionality, and its file description is Proxy Manager Provider RPC interface. It is not normally repaired by downloading a replacement DLL or reinstalling a general-purpose runtime.
What httpprxp.dll is
A legitimate copy normally belongs here:
C:WindowsSystem32httpprxp.dll
%SystemRoot% usually means C:Windows, but the environment variable also works if Windows is installed on another drive.
The file is identified with Microsoft Corporation and Microsoft Windows Operating System metadata. A cataloged sample is digitally signed by Microsoft. Historical Microsoft file lists show x86 and x64 copies shipped with Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and related Windows Server releases. Public records do not establish that every modern Windows edition exposes exactly the same file version or path, so validate the copy against your own Windows build rather than relying on a filename alone.
The name does not mean that the DLL is the complete RPC-over-HTTP service. It is better understood as a Windows networking component that provides a proxy-provider interface used by relevant system functionality.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A pending or incomplete update can leave a Windows component missing, mismatched, or partially serviced.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 10, open Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not require an immediate restart.
- Try the affected program again.
If the error disappears, the component was probably restored or its servicing state was completed. If Windows Update reports an error, or the DLL message remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired store to replace missing or damaged protected system files. Run DISM first.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found files it could not repair. Any of those results is useful, but a successful repair is confirmed by restarting and reproducing the original action.
Manually hunting for component versions and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows detected problems, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC commands remain the primary repair path.
If DISM fails because repair files cannot be obtained, run Windows Update again and restart. For a deeper repair, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with DISM’s /Source and /LimitAccess options. The source must match the installed Windows edition, build, and architecture.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have removed a file after detecting tampering or suspicious behavior. Do not restore a file solely because its name is httpprxp.dll, because malware can use a legitimate Windows filename.

For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections related to the time the error began.
- Open a detection to inspect its path and details.
- Restore it only when the path, Microsoft signature, and detection details confirm it is a genuine system file and the detection is a false positive.
If the detection is uncertain, leave the file quarantined. Run Scan options > Full scan. If malware is suspected or the problem returns after repair, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same area, then run DISM and SFC again.

A genuine copy should not normally appear in a random downloads folder, an application’s temporary directory, or an unfamiliar user-writable location. A same-name file outside the Windows system location deserves additional scrutiny.
Fix 4: Verify the file’s path and Microsoft signature
Checking the file can distinguish a missing Windows component from a suspicious copy or an application-specific load problem.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%SystemRoot%System32
- Press Enter.
- Search for
httpprxp.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Details tab for the description, product, and publisher.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the Microsoft signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
If the file is absent, repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. If it exists but has no valid Microsoft signature, is in an unexpected directory, or triggers security alerts, do not replace it with another downloaded copy. Scan the system and investigate the detection.
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit program can use Windows file-system redirection and may interact with a different system path than you expect. Do not choose a “32-bit” or “64-bit” DLL from a download site. The correct file must match the Windows build, architecture, signature, and servicing state.
Fix 5: Decide whether only one application is failing
The executable named in the error matters.
If several Windows features, installers, or unrelated programs fail, suspect Windows component damage. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.

If only one application fails while Windows and other programs work normally:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings.
- Restart Windows and test again.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- Reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or launcher.
- Use the launcher’s verify or repair-files function when available.
Do not place httpprxp.dll beside the application executable. Windows may search an application directory before system locations, so a private, incorrect, or malicious same-name DLL can create version conflicts or DLL preloading risks. If the application bundles or searches for a Windows component incorrectly, repairing the application is the appropriate fix.
There is no verified evidence that one particular game or application is the universal trigger for this file. Use the executable named in your own error rather than assuming a program from a generic DLL listing.

A driver update is not the normal repair for httpprxp.dll, but it can be reasonable if the error began with a network-adapter failure, a major Windows upgrade, or other device instability.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a manufacturer driver, download it only from the computer or adapter manufacturer’s official support page, matching your Windows edition and architecture. Avoid driver packages that merely copy unrelated DLLs.
Identifying which of many drivers is stale and matching each package to the hardware can take time. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing detected driver issues, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing Windows or reinstalling an application that owns the failure.
Why common DLL fixes do not apply
Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET
httpprxp.dll is a Windows component, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX runtime, or .NET assembly. Reinstalling those packages normally will not restore this file.

Those runtimes are worth repairing only when the error also names a runtime DLL or the affected application has documented dependencies on them.
regsvr32
Do not run this as a general repair:
regsvr32 httpprxp.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. The published export information for httpprxp.dll does not establish it as a self-registering COM component. Registration cannot recreate a missing file, repair a damaged component store, or correct an incompatible version.
Random DLL downloads
Do not download httpprxp.dll from a DLL-indexing or file-sharing site and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. A matching filename does not prove the file has the right architecture, Windows build, signature, catalog relationship, or clean origin. It can also conceal the original servicing problem.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, or the official installer for the affected application instead.
Fix 7: Use System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall
If the error began after a failed update, cleanup operation, system restore, malware cleanup, or storage problem, recovery options may be appropriate.
System Restore
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Follow the prompts and restart.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can change applications, drivers, and system settings. Use it only when a suitable restore point exists.

FAQ
Is httpprxp.dll safe?
A copy in the expected Windows location with valid Microsoft metadata and a valid Microsoft signature is consistent with a genuine Windows component. A same-name file in another directory is not automatically safe.
Should I copy it from another computer?
Normally, no. Windows builds, servicing branches, architectures, and catalog relationships can differ. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
Do I need to install a proxy program?
No. The file is a Windows networking/RPC proxy-provider component, not proof that you need a separate proxy application.
