Hunt: Showdown Texture and Lag Issues: What Crytek Reported and What to Try

Crytek documented texture-loading failures and PC performance drops in Hunt: Showdown in 2024. Here is how to distinguish the symptoms, try its qualified PC advice, and check whether newer patch notes address them.

Crytek acknowledged two distinct Hunt: Showdown problems in a December 9, 2024 update: some objects, Hunters, and items could appear with gray placeholder textures, while some PC players could experience FPS drops and broader slowdown tied to video-memory budget limits. For affected PC players, Crytek advised closing GPU-intensive background apps and trying a lower in-game VRAM usage target. That is dated developer guidance, not confirmation of the game’s current status or a universal fix.

What Crytek said was happening

Objects and characters could show placeholder textures

In its December 9, 2024 Developer Insight – 2.1.1 Bugs and Fixes, Crytek described a regression in which objects, Hunters, and items sometimes failed to load correctly, leaving gray placeholder textures visible. The same post said invisible weapons had reappeared and might be related to the texture-loading problem. Crytek said it had confirmed fixes for Update 2.2; that announcement does not establish whether later updates resolved every instance.

Some PC performance drops were linked to video-memory budgeting

Crytek also reported cases of overall FPS degradation and system slowdown. It said that when Hunt exceeded the video-memory budget allocated by the operating system, players could see a noticeable performance penalty. This is a specific explanation for some performance problems, not evidence that every kind of “lag” is caused by VRAM.

Other performance work included stalls, stutters, and loading

A November 11, 2024 performance update described VRAM-management changes, stability work intended to reduce intermittent stalls during extended sessions, map optimizations targeting frame drops and stutters, and shorter loading times for some console and PC configurations. These are Crytek’s descriptions of development work, not independent benchmark results or proof that every player saw the same improvement.

  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.

First identify which problem you are seeing

“Lag” can describe different symptoms, and the distinction matters before changing settings:

  • Gray or missing textures: visual assets are not loading or displaying correctly. Crytek documented this as a texture-loading regression.
  • Stuttering or FPS drops: the image visibly hitches or frame rate falls. Crytek connected some PC performance degradation to video-memory budget management, and separately described work on stalls and stutters.
  • Long loading: the game or a map takes longer to load. Crytek discussed loading-time improvements for some configurations, but that is not the same symptom as in-match stutter.
  • Connection-related lag: delayed responses, rubber-banding, or other online-play symptoms. The cited Crytek posts do not identify these as VRAM problems, so the VRAM setting is not an evidenced remedy for them.

What affected PC players can try

Close GPU-intensive background applications

Crytek’s December 2024 guidance was to close applications that heavily use the GPU when performance drops occur. Its post said the Update 2.2 fix addressed the memory-budget issue when Hunt is the primary application, while warning that demanding software running in the background could still cause problems. This describes the behavior Crytek reported at that time; it is not a guarantee about every current system.

Try lowering Hunt’s VRAM usage target

Crytek said the default VRAM usage target of 80 works for most systems, and suggested that affected players try 70. Treat this as a troubleshooting option, not a recommended setting for everyone: change it only if you are seeing performance drops, then compare behavior in similar play conditions. The post does not claim that lowering the target fixes gray textures, network lag, or every cause of stuttering.

Check your system against the published requirements

Crytek’s Steam store listing publishes minimum and recommended PC specifications. Compare your CPU, GPU and its video memory, system RAM, and storage against the listing for the version and platform you use. The page says the game is best experienced on an SSD; it does not say an SSD fixes placeholder textures or VRAM-related performance drops. Consider hardware changes only if your system falls below the published requirements or you have other evidence that a component is limiting performance.

How to check whether a fix is current

Crytek’s official update index lists release entries through October 6, 2026, including Update 2.9.1 dated October 5, 2026. The index’s dates and titles alone do not confirm whether those releases fixed or reintroduced the specific texture and performance symptoms described above. For a current answer, open the release notes for your installed update and look for explicit references to texture loading, VRAM or memory budgeting, FPS drops, stalls, or the issue you are experiencing. Do not infer a fix from the existence of a later patch.

What console players should take from the reports

Crytek’s November 2024 performance overview included work across PC, PS5, and Xbox, including map optimization and loading-time improvements for some configurations. The VRAM-target advice in the December post was specifically for PC players. Console players should therefore look to console-specific release notes and support guidance rather than trying to apply the PC setting.
