In current Hytale progression, you unlock extra inventory by crafting the Backpack unlocker at a Workbench and using it from your hand. The base unlock requires 8 Iron Ingots and 8 Medium Leather, opens a separate nine-slot backpack tab, and is permanent. Backpack Upgrade I then uses a Tier 2 Workbench and adds nine more slots; Upgrade II is tied to restoring 100 Memories at the Forgotten Temple/Heart of Orbis progression.

How Hytale’s backpack progression works
The backpack is an inventory expansion, not a wearable bag that occupies an equipment slot. You make an unlocker item, consume it through the secondary (right-click) interaction, and permanently gain a Backpack tab in the inventory screen. The first tab has nine slots. Later upgrades increase that capacity through the game’s normal crafting and progression gates.

The base backpack now uses a Tier 1 Workbench, while Backpack Upgrade I uses Tier 2. Older January guides can therefore show requirements that no longer match the current recipe.
The Hytale Team described the change in the January 17, 2026 Update 1 notes as: “The Backpack and its upgrades are now easier to obtain.” Treat the Update 1 values as the current baseline unless a later patch or a server-specific rule changes the recipe.

Base Backpack: materials, crafting and activation
Materials you need
| Item | Quantity | How it is obtained in the cited progression |
|---|---|---|
| Iron Ingots | 8 | Mine iron ore and smelt the ore in a furnace. |
| Medium Leather | 8 | Process hides at a Tanning Rack. |
These are the post-Update 1 values. If a guide tells you to gather 16 Medium Leather for the base backpack, it is describing the superseded recipe rather than the current listed cost.
Craft the unlocker
- Build or access a Tier 1 Workbench.
- Collect eight Iron Ingots and eight Medium Leather.
- Open the Workbench recipe list and craft the Backpack unlocker.
- Move the crafted item to your active hand or hotbar so it can be used as an item.
The crafted object is consumable. It is not the permanent storage container itself; consuming it grants the backpack capability to your character.

- With the unlocker selected in your hand, use the secondary/right-click interaction.
- Open your inventory and look for the separate Backpack tab.
- Confirm that the tab contains nine slots before moving items into it.
If the tab does not appear, check that you used the item rather than merely placing it in a slot, and verify that the interaction was performed from your hand. The progression is designed as a one-time unlock, so crafting another copy should not be necessary once the capability is active.
What the first nine slots are best used for
The backpack is a separate tab, so it is slower to access than the main inventory and hotbar. Put items there that you need during an expedition but do not need every few seconds:
- Spare tools and replacement equipment.
- Blocks and construction materials reserved for a later build.
- Extra food, crafting ingredients or expedition supplies.
- Materials collected for a return trip to a Workbench, furnace or Tanning Rack.
Keep frequently selected combat, traversal and building items in the main inventory or hotbar. This arrangement reduces tab switching while preserving the backpack for reserve capacity.
One cited guide describes the main inventory as 36 stacks excluding the hotbar and 45 total after the initial nine-slot backpack. Those totals are version-specific editorial guidance, not a universal promise for every mode, server configuration or future patch. The reliable progression number is the backpack’s initial nine slots.

Backpack Upgrade I: the first capacity increase
Current station and cost
| Requirement | Current listed value |
|---|---|
| Crafting station | Tier 2 Workbench |
| Cindercloth Scraps | 40 |
| Cobalt Ingots | 8 |
| Heavy Leather | 24 |
| Resulting backpack capacity in the cited progression | 18 slots |
Upgrade I is the first post-unlock expansion. It does not use the old Tier 3 requirement shown in some January articles. Update 1 moved this upgrade to Tier 2 and lists the materials above.
How to make and apply Upgrade I
- Advance your crafting setup to a Tier 2 Workbench.
- Gather 40 Cindercloth Scraps, eight Cobalt Ingots and 24 Heavy Leather.
- Open the Tier 2 Workbench recipe list and craft Backpack Upgrade I.
- Use or apply the resulting upgrade according to the interaction shown by the current Workbench recipe and item prompt.
- Reopen the Backpack tab and verify that it now shows the expanded capacity.
The cited progression reports 18 slots after this upgrade, which is nine more than the initial tab. Capacity upgrades are ordered: the game checks your current backpack capacity before allowing the next applicable upgrade.
Backpack Upgrade II: the Memory gate
Restore 100 Memories first
Upgrade II is not simply the next material recipe after Upgrade I. Its progression is tied to restoring 100 Memories at the Forgotten Temple/Heart of Orbis path. You must complete that Memory requirement before the upgrade becomes available through the current progression.
- Continue the Forgotten Temple/Heart of Orbis progression until the Memory objective is available.
- Restore 100 Memories.
- Return to the relevant progression or Workbench interface and check the Backpack Upgrade II direction shown there.
- Craft or claim the upgrade exactly as the current recipe or objective instructs.
The cited material does not establish a universal ingredient list or a fixed final slot count for Upgrade II. Do not substitute an older guide’s numbers: the dependable requirement identified for this step is the 100-Memory restoration gate, while the game’s current interface determines whether you craft or claim the reward and what additional requirements apply.
Complete progression at a glance
| Stage | Station or gate | Materials or objective | Capacity information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base Backpack | Tier 1 Workbench | 8 Iron Ingots; 8 Medium Leather | 9 backpack slots |
| Backpack Upgrade I | Tier 2 Workbench | 40 Cindercloth Scraps; 8 Cobalt Ingots; 24 Heavy Leather | 18 slots in the cited progression |
| Backpack Upgrade II | Forgotten Temple/Heart of Orbis progression, then the current Workbench direction | Restore 100 Memories; any further requirement is shown by the current recipe or claim step | Not stated in the cited progression |
Why older guides disagree
Hytale’s early backpack coverage was written before or around Update 1, so two differences commonly appear:
- Base material count: older instructions may list 16 Medium Leather. The current post-Update 1 listing is eight.
- Upgrade I station: older instructions may require a Tier 3 Workbench. The current Update 1 progression places Upgrade I at Tier 2.
When a recipe in your game differs from an older article, use the recipe displayed by your current Workbench and check the patch date. The official Update 1 values take priority over January-era third-party summaries.

Capacity, permanence and death considerations
The base unlock is permanent once consumed. It changes your character’s available inventory interface rather than creating a physical bag that can be dropped, equipped or lost as an ordinary world item. The cited progression also treats the subsequent upgrades as ordered capacity upgrades tied to your current capacity.
Specific behavior after death, in a multiplayer server with custom rules, or after moving between worlds is not established by the cited progression. Before carrying irreplaceable materials, check the server’s death and inventory settings and keep a recovery plan for ordinary dropped items. The backpack’s permanent unlock should not be confused with the persistence rules for the contents placed inside it.
Troubleshooting checklist
The Backpack tab is missing
- Confirm that you crafted the Backpack unlocker rather than a material component.
- Select the item in your hand and trigger the secondary/right-click interaction; opening the inventory alone does not consume it.
- Close and reopen the inventory after using it so the interface refreshes.
- If you are on a server with custom progression, ask whether backpack unlocks are restricted or replaced.
The base recipe asks for 16 Medium Leather
That is the older recipe reported by January guides. The current Update 1 listing is eight Medium Leather with eight Iron Ingots at a Tier 1 Workbench. Verify that the game client and server are on the same version before assuming the recipe is bugged.
Upgrade I is asking for Tier 3
Update 1 moved the first upgrade to Tier 2. A Tier 3 prompt can indicate an outdated guide, a modded recipe, a server-side override or a version mismatch. Compare the recipe in the actual Tier 2 Workbench and confirm the patch level.
The upgrade recipe is unavailable
Check the ordered progression. You cannot skip the base unlock or apply a later capacity upgrade when your current capacity does not meet the preceding requirement. For Upgrade II, verify that 100 Memories have been restored in the Forgotten Temple/Heart of Orbis progression and then revisit the current claim or crafting step.
The backpack feels full despite having slots
Inventory slots hold stacks according to the game’s item rules; adding a slot does not necessarily increase the maximum size of an individual stack. Use the backpack for additional stacks, sort reserve supplies by purpose, and leave hotbar-critical items in the main inventory.

Built-in progression versus a backpack mod
The built-in system is the safest choice for an unmodified game because it follows Hytale’s own Workbench, Memory and capacity checks. A mod can provide additional slots, but it introduces version and installation dependencies.
| Comparison point | Hytale built-in backpack | Extended Backpacks mod listing |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity added | 9 slots initially; 18 after Upgrade I in the cited progression; Upgrade II total not stated | Adds additional backpack inventory-slot upgrades; exact capacity depends on the mod version and configuration |
| Unlock gate | Workbench recipes and, for Upgrade II, 100 restored Memories | Mod installation and the mod’s own upgrade rules |
| Version support | Part of the game’s current Update 1 progression | The CurseForge listing showed a latest update of September 14, 2026; confirm compatibility with your exact client and server version |
| Persistence and multiplayer | Uses the game’s normal character and world rules | Depends on the mod, loader, server installation and configuration; all players may need matching support |
| Distribution | In-game crafting and progression | Digital mod distributed through CurseForge/Overwolf, not a physical backpack or hardware product |
The Extended Backpacks listing reported 113,818 downloads on CurseForge/Overwolf in 2026. That number describes downloads of the digital mod listing, not a guarantee of capacity, stability or compatibility. Install only after checking the mod’s supported game version, loader requirements, server policy and save-backup guidance.
Planning your material route
Before unlocking the base tab
- Smelt at least eight Iron Ingots and keep the required furnace access available.
- Process enough hides to make eight Medium Leather at a Tanning Rack.
- Reserve a Tier 1 Workbench slot for the Backpack unlocker.
- Use the unlocker immediately if you want the extra storage during the same expedition.
Before attempting Upgrade I
- Make sure the Workbench is Tier 2, not Tier 1.
- Stock 40 Cindercloth Scraps, eight Cobalt Ingots and 24 Heavy Leather.
- Keep the existing backpack unlocked so the ordered capacity check can pass.
- Leave room in your inventory for the crafted upgrade and any materials returned by the crafting interface.
Before pursuing Upgrade II
- Track Memory restoration in the Forgotten Temple/Heart of Orbis progression.
- Reach the 100-Memory requirement before expecting the upgrade to appear.
- Read the current Workbench or progression prompt for whether the reward is crafted or claimed.
- Do not rely on an unverified final slot count or old ingredient list.
Do you need a physical backpack or purchase to gain slots?
No. The capacity increase comes from Hytale’s in-game unlocker, Workbench recipes and Memory progression. A physical bag, storage device, book or other purchase cannot add inventory slots to the game. If you choose a third-party expansion, it is software such as a compatible mod, not an Amazon-style physical product.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePractical inventory layout after each upgrade
Use the nine initial slots as a reserve belt rather than a second hotbar. A simple layout is:
- First slots: one spare tool set and emergency food.
- Middle slots: blocks or resource bundles for the current destination.
- Last slots: empty capacity for finds collected on the way home.
After Upgrade I expands the tab to 18 slots in the cited progression, keep the first half for predictable expedition supplies and the second half open for unpredictable loot. This makes it easier to remember what can be discarded or deposited without interrupting combat or construction.
Sort by trip objective rather than by item type alone. A mining trip needs replacement tools and smelting inputs; a building trip needs blocks and support materials; a long exploration trip benefits from food, repair supplies and empty slots. The backpack’s value is greatest when it protects those reserves from crowding the items you use constantly.
Quick Recap
