Hytale Beginner’s Guide: First Steps in Orbis (Early Access, 2026)

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Start in Exploration Mode, gather logs, stone, fiber, and hide, then hand-craft crude tools before investing in a compact base with a bedroll, chest, Campfire, and Workbench. Upgrade through the Furnace, Tanning Rack, Farmer’s Workbench, and Furniture Workbench, smelt your first copper, and only then enter Chapter I’s Goblin Breach. This route gives a new player reliable tools, food, storage, and an escape point before the game’s dangerous story content begins.

What you actually start with in Hytale Early Access

Hytale entered Early Access on January 13, 2026. The current starting experience is Exploration Mode, a survival-like mode built around an infinite procedurally generated world, gathering, building, farming, crafting, combat, and multiplayer. It is the mode to choose for a first session in Orbis.

The launch announcement describes Early Access as unpolished and incomplete: many features are missing and bugs are expected. Treat recipes, balance, station requirements, world generation, and story progression as changeable. The Starter Edition price listed in that announcement is $19.99 USD. That is a launch-era price, not a guarantee that regional pricing or future editions will match it.

At launch, the official announcement listed Adventure Mode, official minigames, the restored World Gen V2 default spawn, and some social features as not yet included. The supplied October 2026 Chapter I announcement confirms new story content, but does not establish that every launch-excluded feature has since arrived. Check the current in-game mode list rather than assuming those systems are available.

Your first session: the safest order of operations

1. Select Exploration Mode

Choose Exploration Mode from the current mode selection. Do not wait for Adventure Mode if it is absent from your build; Exploration Mode is where the documented first-session systems are available. Once the world loads, avoid committing to a long expedition immediately. Your first objective is a small material buffer and a return point.

2. Gather the four materials that unlock your opening

Collect logs, stone, fiber, and hide before traveling far from your starting area. These are the priority materials for the initial hand-crafted tools and stations. Pick up enough to make a complete tool set and a few utility items, then keep gathering as you move; running out of basic materials is more dangerous than spending a few extra minutes collecting them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Logs: the basic structural resource for tools, storage, torches, and early construction.
  • Stone: required for crude tools and the first progression into metalworking.
  • Fiber: used by early survival and utility recipes.
  • Hide: part of the opening station sequence and other early equipment recipes.

The documented recipe list does not establish permanent quantities for every item. Early Access balance can change, so use the in-game recipe panel for the exact count in your version.

3. Hand-craft the essentials before building

Use the starting crafting interface to make the following items in a practical order:

  1. Crude Pickaxe for stone and ore.
  2. Crude Hatchet for faster wood gathering.
  3. Crude Sword for basic defense.
  4. Crude Torch for visibility and marking a route.
  5. Small Crude Chest for a first storage container.
  6. Crude Bedroll for a repeatable return point at your base.
  7. Workbench for the first tier of structured crafting.
  8. Campfire for early cooking and a visible, useful center for camp.
  9. Builder’s Workbench when you are ready to place and organize a more permanent shelter.

Make the pickaxe, hatchet, and sword before cosmetic construction. A torch and chest prevent two common early setbacks: losing your route in darkness and carrying every item while exploring.

Where to build your first base

Build close enough to your initial resource area that you can return with a full inventory, but not directly inside a dangerous encounter site. A modest clearing near wood and stone is more useful than an elaborate structure in an exposed location. Your first shelter only needs to protect your stations and make your return route obvious.

Use a compact station layout

Place the bedroll, Small Crude Chest, Campfire, and Workbench together. This arrangement keeps your return point, storage, cooking, and crafting within a few steps. The placement itself is practical guidance rather than a documented mechanical requirement; the important benefit is reducing travel between tasks and making it easy to unload after gathering.

Keep a torch or another visible marker near the approach to camp. Store spare tools and basic materials in the chest rather than carrying everything on every trip. Leave room beside the Workbench for the next stations so that your base can expand without forcing a rebuild.

What not to spend time on yet

  • Do not build a large decorative house before you have reliable tools, food, and storage.
  • Do not place your only chest far from the bedroll; returning from a failed expedition should be simple.
  • Do not make your first base a deep-cave camp. Underground resources are valuable, but a surface return point is easier to find and reorganize.
  • Do not treat the first shelter as permanent. Exploration Mode supports building, so you can relocate or create outposts once your equipment improves.

The early crafting-station path

Your first Workbench is the beginning of progression, not the endpoint. Follow this order to unlock the systems that make longer trips manageable.

Stage Station or item Why it matters
Starting Workbench Workbench Moves you beyond hand-crafting and opens the first structured recipes.
First upgrade group Furnace Processes ore and prepares metal progression.
First upgrade group Tanning Rack Turns hide-based materials into usable components.
First upgrade group Farmer’s Workbench Supports farming and plant-based production.
First upgrade group Furniture Workbench Expands practical and decorative building options.
After first copper bars Blacksmith’s Anvil Opens the next metalworking step.
After first copper bars Armorer’s Workbench Supports armor progression.
After first copper bars Chef’s Stove Improves food preparation and consumable options.

The exact material costs for these stations are not fixed by the supplied documentation. Read the recipe requirements in your current build, and expect those requirements to change during Early Access. The important order is functional: establish a Workbench, make the first four support stations, then use your first copper bars to move into the anvil, armor, and advanced cooking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to get copper and upgrade your workbench

Use the Crude Pickaxe to mine stone and search for copper-bearing deposits while exploring nearby terrain. Bring the ore back to your Furnace, process it into copper bars, and spend those first bars on the Blacksmith’s Anvil, Armorer’s Workbench, and Chef’s Stove as your priorities allow. If the recipe panel in your version asks for additional components, return to the Tanning Rack or Farmer’s Workbench rather than abandoning the sequence.

Do not travel deep into unknown territory solely to find copper during your first minutes. Build the basic base first, then make short mining loops from it. This gives you a place to unload stone and ore, repair your route, and recover if a hostile encounter interrupts the trip.

Choose a progression style deliberately

There is no documented single best build for a first player. Your choice is mainly about how much risk you accept before expanding your crafting infrastructure.

Decision axis Safer progression Faster exploration
Travel risk Gather a buffer, establish the base, and improve equipment before long trips. Leave with crude tools and accept more returns to replace supplies.
Crafting versus combat Build the Furnace, farming support, storage, and food systems early. Prioritize the sword and movement, delaying larger station investment.
Solo versus multiplayer Keep every station and storage point organized so one player can recover quickly. Divide gathering, building, farming, and scouting among players, then regroup at one marked camp.

For a first solo session, the safer column reduces the cost of mistakes. In multiplayer, efficiency comes from specialization, but only if everyone knows where the shared storage and return point are. The game supports multiplayer in Exploration Mode; the documented systems do not require a particular party composition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make inventory, food, and storage work for you

Exploration becomes easier when your base handles routine work. The launch announcement confirms expandable inventories, upgraded workbenches, interaction with nearby storage, farming, consumables, and varied weapons. Use those systems as a loop rather than treating them as optional extras.

Expand capacity before taking long routes

Keep one chest for raw materials and another for finished tools or expedition supplies once your storage allows it. Empty your inventory before leaving, carry only the tools and food needed for the route, and reserve a few slots for unexpected loot. A full inventory turns a successful trip into a forced decision about what to discard.

Start a small farm early

The Farmer’s Workbench supports the farming path. Plant food and useful materials near your base so that every return can include a quick harvest. Farming is especially valuable when you are preparing for a story expedition: it converts a short period of base work into a dependable supply of consumables instead of requiring another risky hunt.

Use the nearby-storage interaction

Keep storage close to your stations. The official launch description specifically calls out nearby-storage interaction, so a compact workshop lets you craft without repeatedly moving materials between distant containers. Put the chest where you can access it while working at the Campfire and Workbench, then expand outward as your station count grows.

Combat and movement before Chapter I

Hytale’s combat is designed around mobility, and weapons have unique abilities. Even with crude equipment, practice moving while attacking rather than standing still and trading hits. Carry food and keep a retreat route in mind whenever you leave camp.

What to improve first

  • Replace damaged or weak tools before an expedition.
  • Carry a sword and enough food for the planned route.
  • Keep torches available for caves, night travel, and marking turns.
  • Test your movement and attack timing against ordinary threats before entering a story area.

Chapter I adds Ability Runestones and Modifier Runestones. Players can equip up to two Ability Runestones and up to two Modifier Runestones. The launch set of abilities named in the official material includes Fireball, Ground Slam, Wind Strike, Enrage, Imbue Poison, Chain Hook, and Charged Shot. These are progression choices, not requirements for your first camp, so learn the basic movement and weapon handling before chasing specialized combinations.

When to enter the Goblin Breach

Chapter I: Out of the Breach launched on October 12, 2026. Its opening begins at the Forgotten Temple and Goblin Lab. A temporary Goblin Breach leads to the Guttering Hollows, where you face a regenerating fragment, a Void timer, predators, traps, puzzles, goblins, and loot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enter when you can complete a short expedition without depending on your last tool or final food item. A practical readiness check is:

  • A working sword, pickaxe, and hatchet, with replacements or materials ready at camp.
  • Food and consumables sufficient for a timed run.
  • Free inventory space for loot and quest-related items.
  • A clearly marked base with a bedroll, chest, Campfire, and Workbench.
  • Enough confidence in movement to retreat from predators and traps rather than forcing every fight.

The Void timer changes the decision-making. Do not spend the opening minutes over-looting a side path while the objective advances. Read the environment, solve puzzles methodically, and leave a route back to the entrance in your memory or with markers. The regenerating fragment means that the area is not simply a one-time room to clear; plan around repeated pressure and limited time.

Use Chapter I rewards as goals, not starting requirements

Chapter I adds the Scrap Drill, Scrap Glider, Rocket Boots, Hookshot, Spyglass, Bangstick, and Goblin Repair Kit. These are progression rewards and utility options. They can broaden mining, scouting, traversal, combat, and equipment maintenance after you have basic infrastructure, but none is needed to gather your first logs or build your initial shelter.

Prepare for the Deepworks

The chapter culminates in the handcrafted Deepworks dungeon, which includes the Feastmaster and the multi-phase Gobliterator. Treat the Deepworks as a prepared expedition rather than an extension of your first cave trip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you leave

  1. Use your base chest to separate expedition supplies from bulk building materials.
  2. Cook and carry food, leaving a reserve at camp in case you return in poor condition.
  3. Repair or replace weapons and tools, and bring the equipment needed for the route rather than every item you own.
  4. Review your Runestone choices and select abilities that match your preferred distance and mobility.
  5. Make sure the bedroll and camp are easy to locate if you need to withdraw.

During the dungeon

Expect multi-phase combat to punish a single attack pattern. Preserve mobility, watch for trap layouts, and use the environment to create space. The named bosses are not presented as a beginner tutorial, so a failed attempt is useful information: note which phase consumed food or durability, then adjust your equipment and consumables at camp before trying again.

What is in Hytale Early Access right now?

Based on the January 13 launch information and the October 12 Chapter I update, a new player can currently expect:

  • An infinite procedurally generated world in Exploration Mode.
  • Building, gathering, farming, crafting, combat, consumables, varied weapons, expandable inventories, upgraded workbenches, and multiplayer.
  • Chapter I story content beginning at the Forgotten Temple and Goblin Lab, with the Goblin Breach, Guttering Hollows, and Deepworks.
  • Ability and Modifier Runestones, plus Chapter I mobility and utility rewards.
  • More than 100 new cosmetic options announced with Chapter I.

Do not assume that every feature shown in older previews is playable. The launch announcement specifically described Adventure Mode, official minigames, the restored World Gen V2 default spawn, and social features as unavailable at that point, while also warning that Early Access is incomplete. Availability can change between updates; verify the mode and feature list in your installed build.

Common first-session mistakes and fixes

Leaving before making a return point

Symptom: you die or become lost with all your materials. Fix: craft the bedroll, place it with your chest and Campfire, and mark the approach with torches before scouting farther.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Building a huge house before a workshop

Symptom: you have a beautiful shell but no Furnace, food plan, or storage capacity. Fix: keep the first shelter compact and follow the station order before decorative construction.

Entering the Goblin Breach under-equipped

Symptom: the Void timer expires while you are still learning the area. Fix: practice movement outside the story zone, carry food and spare tools, and reserve inventory slots for the run.

Carrying every resource everywhere

Symptom: you cannot pick up useful loot and spend more time sorting than exploring. Fix: use nearby storage, keep raw materials at camp, and leave with a defined purpose.

Treating launch recipes as permanent

Symptom: a guide’s material count does not match your recipe panel. Fix: trust the recipe and station requirements displayed by your current build; Early Access balance is subject to change.
