Adventure is the normal exploration-and-progression experience; Creative makes players invulnerable and lets them fly. A server can go much further than those two labels, however: worlds, plugins, mods, and creator tools can turn a base world into a survival variant, minigame network, roleplay server, economy, PvP ruleset, or an entirely original format.

The two built-in Hytale world modes
The clearest way to understand Hytale server modes is to separate the setting attached to a world from the experience built on top of it. The official server reference currently names only two world-level values:

| Creative | Construct, prototype and test without normal survival pressure | Players are invulnerable and can fly | Large builds, technical testing, event staging and creator work |
These are not a complete list of every community server genre. They are the built-in world behaviors that a server can use as a foundation. A custom server experience may still be described by its operators as “survival,” “bed wars,” “roleplay,” or something else, even when its underlying world uses one of the two official values.
Adventure: Hytale’s normal exploration and progression experience
Adventure is the mode most players will recognize as the standard Hytale game. Its purpose is to give a group a persistent world to discover and develop rather than a blank construction space.

What players do in Adventure
- Travel through procedurally generated landscapes.
- Find dungeons, secrets, creatures and other points of interest.
- Fight enemies and improve through equipment and progression.
- Gather materials for crafting, farming and building.
- Establish shared projects and return to a world that changes through group play.
Hytale’s official description frames this as an exploration mode where players can see new places, unlock memories, visit other worlds and invite friends to leave a lasting mark together. That wording matters for server owners: Adventure is not limited to a strictly competitive “hardcore survival” ruleset. It also supports relaxed cooperative communities, builders who want resource-driven projects, and groups that treat exploration as the main activity.
How Adventure works on a community server
An Adventure server can keep the normal game loop intact or add systems around it. Operators might add protected towns, shared objectives, trading, quests, roleplay rules or player-versus-player zones. Those additions are server content and administration choices, not extra values in the official GameMode field.
If you want players to earn materials, face danger and make meaningful progression decisions, start with an Adventure world. Add custom rules only where they serve the community’s goal; otherwise, extra systems can obscure the straightforward explore–gather–craft–build loop that makes the mode accessible to new players.
Creative: unrestricted building and experimentation
Creative is the construction-oriented world setting. The official server reference defines its concrete gameplay differences as invulnerability and flight. In practice, those permissions remove the two biggest costs of large-scale building: travel time and the risk of losing a character while testing a design.
When Creative is the right choice
- Planning a spawn, hub or event arena before opening a public server.
- Testing blocks, mechanisms, terrain layouts or combat spaces.
- Running a build-focused community where collecting resources is not the point.
- Staging screenshots, machinima, demonstrations or creator events.
- Teaching new players how a custom map works without sending them through a progression loop first.
Creative does not automatically create a minigame. It gives builders a permissive world in which to make one. A finished competitive or puzzle experience still needs map logic, rules, matchmaking or moderation supplied by server content and tools.
Creative tools and content production
The official game page also highlights advanced in-game creative tools, integration of models and animations through Blockbench, and the ability to edit game content. These capabilities let a team produce more than static buildings: custom props, animated assets, themed environments and interactive set pieces can become part of a server’s identity. The exact workflow depends on the tools and APIs available in the current release, so treat Creative as the workspace and the creator toolchain as the production layer.

How custom server experiences fit around the two modes
Hytale describes its servers as player-run from day one. The stated model is to host a world, customize it with mods and plugins, and shape an experience for friends or a wider community, including survival, minigames or something entirely new.
That creates two useful layers:
- World GameMode: the built-in Adventure or Creative behavior.
- Server experience: the rules, content and systems implemented through worlds, plugins, mods and creator tools.
A server can therefore use Adventure as the foundation for a resource economy, a roleplay shard or a team-based survival variant. It can use Creative to build and test a map, then publish that map as part of a separate event or minigame world. The label players see in a server list may describe the custom experience rather than the underlying world value.
Survival variants
“Survival” is best understood as a design category, not a third official GameMode value. An operator can keep Adventure’s normal rules and add tougher enemies, limited resources, land claims, wipes, seasonal progression or a player economy. Each choice changes the feel of the server while retaining the standard world setting.
Minigames
Hytale’s official minigame material promises creator control over camera position, game assets and basic mechanics. That makes minigames a supported creation target, but it does not imply that every familiar minigame already ships as a selectable preset. Availability depends on the content installed on a particular server.
Recommended Free Tools
A practical minigame project normally needs four parts:
- A map or arena: usually built and tested in a Creative workspace.
- Rules: win conditions, rounds, teams, scoring, timers and respawn behavior.
- Presentation: cameras, assets, effects and interfaces that explain what players should do.
- Operations: queues, resets, moderation and a way to move players between matches or worlds.
Roleplay, economy and PvP formats
Roleplay servers can combine Adventure exploration with custom professions, laws, factions and social spaces. Economy servers can add shops, currencies, taxes or player-run markets. PvP communities can define arenas, team rules, safe zones and seasonal rankings. These are examples of designs the player-run-server model can support; they are not a promise that an official package for each genre exists or that every plugin will be available in every release.

What the current server documentation tells operators
The official documentation currently identifies itself as Release 0.7.2. It covers server operation, content creation, world generation, asset references and the Java server API. Because Hytale is in active development, use the documentation version that matches the server software you are running; names and implementation details can change between releases.
The Instances reference documents per-world settings beyond GameMode, including the default permission group, non-player-character spawning, block spawners, gameplay configuration and instance behavior. This is important for multi-world communities: one server process can organize different worlds with different purposes, permissions and gameplay settings instead of forcing every activity into a single map.
A sensible world layout
- Choose the purpose of each world. Decide whether it is a shared Adventure world, a Creative build space, a lobby, an event arena or a test instance.
- Set the world GameMode. Use Adventure for ordinary progression and Creative for construction or unrestricted testing.
- Review instance settings. Check permission defaults, NPC and block-spawner behavior, gameplay configuration and how the instance should behave when players leave or return.
- Add custom content. Install only the mods, plugins and assets required for that world’s purpose, and keep a record of versions.
- Test with a small group. Verify permissions, resets, progression, combat rules and recovery from a crash before inviting a public audience.
The documentation does not establish a universal numeric player capacity in the material available here. Capacity depends on the server build, hardware, network, world complexity and installed content, so do not advertise a guaranteed number unless you have a documented, repeatable basis for it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Private friend worlds versus public community servers
The technical choice of Adventure or Creative is only one part of operating a server. A private world for friends has a small moderation surface and a limited audience. A public community server adds trust, safety and legal responsibilities even if the underlying map is simple.
Private or invite-only operation
- Define who can connect and who receives administrative permissions.
- Back up world data before installing or updating mods.
- Keep a test instance for changes that could affect the main world.
- Write down reset and rollback procedures so one mistake does not erase shared progress.
Public operation and official Discovery
Under the Hytale EULA, community servers use separate server software and operators are responsible for server content, moderation, player safety, legal compliance and applicable taxes or fees. Servers listed in the official Discovery system can face additional eligibility, technical, safety, content-rating, parental-control and monetization requirements. A server does not become compliant merely because it uses an official GameMode.

Before opening publicly, establish rules that players can find, a process for reports and appeals, protection for younger players, and controls for staff access. Keep promotional descriptions accurate: call a world “Creative build” only if that is what players receive, and disclose custom progression, wipes or paid features clearly.

Mods, plugins and monetization boundaries
Mods and plugins are the mechanism that turns a basic world into a distinctive community experience. They can change rules, add content, connect worlds and implement minigame logic, but they also increase maintenance risk. Test updates in a copy of the world, check compatibility with the current server release and remove abandoned components rather than leaving them exposed.
The EULA states that original Mods may be monetized independently when operators follow its restrictions. That includes truthful presentation, legal compliance and safety requirements, and it excludes prohibited blockchain schemes. Treat payment as an operational responsibility: explain what a supporter receives, avoid claims that imply official endorsement, and make sure purchases do not undermine the safety or fairness rules you advertise.
Choosing a mode for a new Hytale server
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Then add… |
|---|---|---|
| Exploration and long-term progression | Adventure | World protection, quests, economy or cooperative goals as needed |
| Building without danger or resource limits | Creative | Build plots, showcases, events or collaborative permissions |
| A survival community with a special ruleset | Adventure | Mods or plugins for the rules that make the server distinctive |
| A competitive minigame | Creative for map production; an appropriate world setting for play | Match rules, scoring, resets, queues and moderation |
| A multi-purpose community | Separate worlds or instances | Clear portals, permissions and descriptions so players know each world’s purpose |
Ask three questions before deciding: What should a player do during the first ten minutes? What should still be interesting after ten hours? Which rules must be enforced by software rather than by staff judgment? The answers usually point to Adventure for progression, Creative for production, and plugins or mods for everything that makes the server uniquely yours.
What is not yet defined by the official mode list
- There is no published fixed catalog of every future Hytale server mode.
- The two named GameMode values do not guarantee that a particular minigame, plugin or mod exists for your release.
- No authoritative universal player-capacity figure is established here.
- Early Access documentation and APIs may evolve, so verify release-specific behavior before promising features to a community.
Those limits are useful distinctions, not weaknesses in the concept. Hytale’s design deliberately leaves room for player-run servers to invent formats instead of constraining communities to a short menu of presets.
Bottom line for server planners
Use Adventure when the server should feel like a living world of exploration, combat, crafting, farming and cooperative building. Use Creative when the priority is unrestricted construction, testing or event production. For survival variants, minigames, roleplay, economy, PvP and new experiments, treat those settings as foundations and build the actual rules with worlds, plugins, mods and creator tools. Once the server is public or monetized, plan moderation, safety, disclosure and EULA compliance as carefully as the gameplay itself.
