Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor the current release patchline, the safest way to find Hytale saves is through the launcher: open Settings, select Open Directory…, then choose User Data. Hypixel Studios says this control always opens the correct folder for the active installation. On a standard release install, the folder is %APPDATA%HytaleUserData on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/Hytale/UserData on macOS, and $XDG_DATA_HOME/Hytale/UserData (or ~/.local/share/Hytale/UserData) on Linux.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Hytale servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Before copying anything, leave your world and stop any dedicated server cleanly. Copy the complete client save folder, or the complete server universe/ directory, to a dated location on another drive. Keep several generations and test a restore on a duplicate copy before removing the original.

Use the launcher to open the right Hytale folder
Hytale can use different data roots for different installations and patchlines. A path copied from an old forum post may therefore point to an empty directory even when your world is safe. The launcher is the authoritative way to locate the active installation.
- Start the Hytale Launcher and sign in to the account that owns the installation.
- Open Settings.
- Click Open Directory….
- Select User Data.
- Leave that window open while you identify the save or server data you need to copy.
The official support wording is: “The User Data button always opens the correct folder.” That instruction applies to the release patchline and is also the best first check when a manually entered path does not match your installation.

Standard release locations by operating system
These are the documented locations for the release patchline. Environment variables are shown exactly as they are normally entered on each system.
| Operating system | Release User Data path | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | %APPDATA%HytaleUserData |
Paste the path into File Explorer’s address bar, or open it from the launcher. |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Hytale/UserData |
In Finder, use Go > Go to Folder…, then enter the path. |
| Linux | $XDG_DATA_HOME/Hytale/UserData |
Use the value of XDG_DATA_HOME if it is set. |
| Linux (fallback) | ~/.local/share/Hytale/UserData |
Use this conventional data directory when XDG_DATA_HOME is not set. |
A custom Windows installation can use a different root. That is why the launcher command is preferable to assuming that %APPDATA% contains the active data.
Release and non-release patchlines do not share saves
Hytale Update 5 changed storage for non-release patchlines. The release patchline continues to use %HYTALE%/UserData/. Non-release patchlines use separate directories below %HYTALE%/data/; the patch notes give %HYTALE%/data/pre-release/ as an example.
During migration, existing non-release worlds, mods, and settings are duplicated. After migration, patchlines no longer share data. A pre-release world can therefore be absent from the release User Data folder without being deleted; it may be in the patchline-specific data directory instead.
- If the world was created in the release build, open the release User Data directory.
- If it was created in a pre-release or another non-release build, open that patchline’s directory.
- Use the launcher for the patchline you are actually running, then search inside the folder it opens.
- Back up each patchline separately if you still play worlds in more than one of them.
Hytale was released on January 13, 2026. That date identifies the current release context; it does not change the folder-selection procedure.

Finding a single-player world inside User Data
The User Data directory is the container, not necessarily the folder you send to another player. Hytale’s multiplayer support guidance says a single-player world can be found in %appdata%Hytalesaves and transferred by sending the world folder.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Because official documentation describes different layouts for different game contexts and patchline eras, treat saves as the place to inspect after opening the active User Data directory. Do not replace the launcher-selected location with a copied path from an older guide.
Identify the correct world
- Close the world and return to the title screen so no chunks are being written.
- Open the active User Data folder from the launcher.
- Look for the client saves directory and its world subfolders.
- Use folder names, modification times, and the in-game world name to distinguish worlds with similar names.
- Copy the entire folder for the world you intend to preserve. Do not copy only a single region, chunk, or configuration file.
If you are moving one single-player world, the complete world folder is the portable unit described by the multiplayer support instructions. Keep the folder structure intact when compressing or sending it; extracting files into the wrong nesting level can make the game fail to detect the world.
Dedicated server saves: back up universe/
A dedicated server has a different backup boundary from a client world. The server manual defines universe/ as the location for world and player save data. Playable worlds are stored below universe/worlds/, and each world has its own configuration files.
For a server, copy the complete universe/ directory rather than only one directory under universe/worlds/. Player inventories, progression, and other save-wide information live alongside world data. Restoring only one world folder can leave the world present while player data or related state is missing.

Files around the universe
The server directory also contains server-level configuration, logs, mods, and permissions. These are not all world-save files, but they matter when recreating a modded or customized server. If your goal is disaster recovery rather than only preserving terrain, keep a second archive of the server directory’s configuration and mod files as well as the complete universe/ directory.
| Situation | Primary backup target | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player client | The complete world folder under the active User Data save location | Contains the portable client world. |
| Dedicated server | The complete universe/ directory |
Contains world and player save data, including playable worlds under universe/worlds/. |
| Modded or customized server rebuild | universe/ plus server configuration, mods, and permissions |
Those surrounding files may be required to reproduce the same server behavior. |
Manual client backup before a reinstall or PC move
A manual backup is sufficient for a single-player world when you can stop playing long enough to make a consistent copy.
- Exit the world. Return to the title screen and quit the game. Do not copy while the client is actively saving.
- Open the active data root. In the launcher, choose Settings > Open Directory… > User Data.
- Locate the world folder. Inspect the client save directory and confirm the folder’s name and recent modification time.
- Make a complete copy. Copy the whole world folder, preserving its internal structure and file names.
- Use a dated destination. A name such as
Hytale-backup-2026-10-15records when the copy was made. Store it outside the original Hytale directory. - Prefer a separate device. An external drive protects the backup if the computer’s internal disk fails or is erased during reinstallation. A same-disk copy is convenient but does not protect against that failure.
- Keep the original untouched. Never move the only copy as part of the backup operation. Copy first, verify second.
- Repeat after important sessions. Make a new dated copy after major builds, long play sessions, or before installing a new patchline.
If you are transferring the world to another PC, install and launch the same Hytale patchline once on the destination, quit it, open that installation’s User Data directory, and place the copied world folder in the corresponding saves location. Keep the original archive until the destination loads the world successfully.
Dedicated-server backups and automatic protection
Stop a dedicated server cleanly before a manual copy. A running server may be writing chunks, player files, or metadata while you copy, producing a partial backup that looks complete but cannot restore correctly.

--backup |
Enables the server’s native backup mechanism. | Use when you want automatic server backups instead of relying only on manual copies. |
--backup-dir <Path> |
Sets the directory in which backups are written. | Point it to a dedicated backup location such as a backups directory. |
--backup-frequency <Integer> |
Sets the interval between automatic backups. | The wrapper example documents a 30-minute frequency. |
A 30-minute interval is an example from the Hytale server wrapper documentation, not a guarantee that every installation uses that interval. Choose a frequency that matches how much progress your players can afford to lose, and monitor the destination for available disk space.
How to verify that a backup can be restored
A file copy is not a proven backup until a separate copy can be opened. Test without risking the live world.
- Duplicate the dated archive or copy it to a test machine.
- Use the same Hytale patchline that created the world whenever possible.
- For a client test, place the copied world folder in the destination installation’s corresponding saves directory.
- For a server test, stop the test server, replace its test
universe/directory with the archive, and start it again. - Load the world and check terrain, builds, player inventory, and recent progress.
- Record which archive was tested and keep the live installation unchanged.
Retain several dated generations. If a corruption or mistaken deletion is copied into the newest backup, an older generation may be the only usable recovery point.

The launcher opens a different directory than the guide
Custom Windows installs and non-release patchlines can use different roots. Open the folder with the launcher rather than editing a forum path. Confirm that you selected User Data, not a logs or installation directory.
You are checking the release folder for a pre-release world
Update 5 separates non-release data below %HYTALE%/data/<patchline>/. Open the launcher while that patchline is selected and inspect its own User Data location. A pre-release world may not appear next to release worlds because the patchlines no longer share data.

The world is under a different account or profile
Environment-variable paths resolve to the current operating-system user. If several people use the computer, sign in to the account that created the world and open the launcher under that account.

You are confusing logs with saves
Hytale’s client log retention is limited to the ten newest log files. That is a diagnostic-retention rule, not a limit on world backups. Do not delete or overwrite saves because a log folder appears small.
A server world is being sought in the client folder
Dedicated-server data lives with the server installation, and the save boundary is universe/. Search the server directory rather than the launcher’s client saves folder.
Common backup mistakes and the safer alternative
- Copying while the game is saving: exit the world or stop the server first, then copy.
- Backing up only
universe/worlds/: copy the entireuniverse/directory so player data is included. - Overwriting one backup repeatedly: create dated generations and preserve older copies.
- Keeping the only copy on the same disk: put at least one copy on a separate physical device.
- Mixing patchline data: label release and non-release archives separately.
- Changing folder nesting during transfer: place the world folder at the destination’s corresponding saves level, not inside an extra folder created by the archive tool.
- Deleting the source immediately: test the restored copy before removing the original.
- Assuming automatic backups cover a reinstall: verify that the backup directory itself is outside the installation that will be erased.
A practical backup plan
For a casual single-player world, make a dated copy whenever you finish a major build and another immediately before reinstalling or changing computers. For an active dedicated server, enable the native --backup controls, direct them to a separate backups location with --backup-dir, and supplement automation with occasional offline copies of universe/.
Label archives with the patchline and date, for example Hytale-release-universe-2026-10-15 or Hytale-pre-release-world-2026-10-15. Keep at least one copy disconnected from the gaming PC when possible. Most importantly, use the launcher’s User Data button each time you begin a backup; it prevents a stale path from turning a routine copy into a missing-world incident.
