What critics praise—and what frustrates them
Creative premise and level design
Critic summaries point to the game’s playful presentation, original ideas, varied scenarios, and inventive level design as its strengths. The four-fish setup gives the adventure a lighthearted identity, while the different ways of moving through the world help keep its situations from feeling identical. PC Invasion’s summary praised the creative presentation while also noting aggravations; Shacknews highlighted delightful level design alongside frustrations. These are individual outlet assessments, not a guarantee that every player will respond the same way.

- I AM fish game
Demanding physics and camera friction
The main reservation is how the controls and physics feel in practice. The Xbox Store description explicitly says the controls are designed to be challenging. Critics also flag strict physics and camera problems: a movement that seems simple can take careful handling, and camera friction can compound the difficulty. Players who enjoy learning a demanding movement system may find that challenge part of the appeal; those who want smooth, forgiving traversal may find repeated attempts tiresome. Metacritic’s critic summaries include these contrasting reactions.
Is I Am Fish worth playing?
It is a better fit for players drawn to an offbeat premise and creative environments than for anyone looking for effortless movement. Consider these trade-offs before choosing:
Rank #2
- Likely to appeal: you enjoy whimsical adventures, unusual physics-based movement, and figuring out how to navigate a level through trial and error.
- Potential drawback: strict movement and camera friction can make errors feel frustrating rather than playful.
- Check your platform: the review snapshots are not interchangeable; Metacritic’s critic figure is for PC, while Steam’s figures reflect English-language Steam reviews.
- Do not expect co-op: Steam lists the game as single-player.
