If a phishing site captured your Steam credentials, you can often recover the account even if the attacker changed the password, email address, phone number, or Steam Guard settings. The safest order is: stop communicating with the scammer, secure your email account, check the device you used, and then contact Steam only through Steam’s official stolen-account recovery page.
Do not pay anyone claiming they can recover the account. Steam warns users to use only help.steampowered.com, steampowered.com, and steamcommunity.com for Steam support and logins.

How I knew it was a Steam phishing attack
Steam phishing usually does not require an attacker to break into Valve’s systems. Instead, a scammer persuades you to enter your login details into a fake page that looks like Steam.
Common lures include:
- “Vote for my team” links
- Tournament or esports invitations
- Free skins, items, or game keys
- Fake trade-verification pages
- Messages claiming your account was reported
- People pretending to be Steam Support or Valve employees
- Links sent by a friend whose account was already hijacked
- QR codes or fake browser login windows
Urgency is the warning sign. A message demanding immediate verification, threatening a ban, or directing you to a site outside the official Steam domains should be treated as suspicious. Steam Support is handled through its official support system, not through Discord, social media, or an unsolicited Steam chat message.

- Visa Virtual eGift Cards are designed for online use only. Gift Cards are subject to Terms and Conditions: a.co/5bw3qXJ
- When you access your Visa Virtual eGift Card for the first time, you’ll need to register your name, address, phone number, and email address via activationspot.com. These details should also be used as your billing address for online purchases, as many merchants require address verification for purchase authorization.
- This Visa Virtual eGift Card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Visa Virtual eGift Cards are emailed active.
- Funds do not expire but your Visa Virtual eGift Card has a ‘valid thru’ date (9 years from date of purchase). If funds remain after this date has passed, please call the Toll Free number found on your Visa Virtual eGift Card for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout.
- This item is not eligible for refund, resale, or return. Available for sale within the United States only. Not available to residents of Puerto Rico, Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota, West Virginia and the US Virgin Islands.
Never enter a Steam password or Steam Guard code on a third-party website. A padlock icon alone is not proof that a page is genuine; check the actual domain.
What to do in the first few minutes
- Close the phishing page. Do not enter more information or follow-up codes.
- Stop communicating with the scammer. Do not click further links, argue, or pay a recovery fee.
- Preserve evidence. Save screenshots of the messages, fake domain, emails, and unauthorized transaction notices if it is safe to do so. Do not revisit a malicious page just to capture it.
- Secure your email from a known-clean device. Change the email password, enable multifactor authentication, sign out other sessions, and remove unfamiliar recovery addresses, phone numbers, app passwords, and forwarding rules.
- Assess the device. If you only entered credentials, the incident may be credential phishing. If you downloaded a file, installed an extension, ran an executable, or allowed remote access, treat the device as potentially compromised.
Secure the email account before attempting Steam recovery. If the inbox is compromised, an attacker may be able to intercept recovery messages or take the account back after you regain it.
Check the computer before changing important passwords
If no file was downloaded or run, inspect the browser for suspicious extensions, saved passwords, and unfamiliar site access. Change any exposed or reused passwords.
If malware may be involved, use a known-clean device for email, financial, and Steam password changes. On Windows 10 and Windows 11:

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan for a comprehensive scan while Windows is running.
- Choose Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) if persistent malware is suspected, then save your work because the computer will restart.
These options are documented by Microsoft. A clean scan lowers the risk but does not prove that every compromise has been removed. Remove suspicious extensions and remote-access programs. If unusual behavior continues, back up essential files carefully and consider resetting or reinstalling Windows. Change passwords again after the device is clean.
How I recovered the Steam account
Navigate manually to help.steampowered.com/en/wizard/HelpWithAccountStolen. Do not use a recovery link sent by the person who phished you or by a supposed recovery agent.
- Open Steam Support.
- Select the stolen-account or account-access option.
- Try to locate the account with the Steam account name, previous email address, or phone number.
- If automatic recovery fails, continue to the support-contact form.
- Submit proof of ownership and as many previous account identifiers as possible.
Steam says recovery can remain possible even when the attacker changed the password, email address, and phone number. That does not guarantee a successful outcome: Steam must decide whether the evidence establishes ownership.
If you need manual help, Steam’s account-recovery guidance asks for all possible Steam login names and email addresses associated with the account.

Useful proof of ownership
- Previous Steam account names
- Previous email addresses and phone numbers
- An approximate account-creation date
- Original purchase details, receipts, or transaction IDs
- Steam Wallet codes or gift-card information
- Payment-method details requested by the official form
- Original product keys, where applicable
- Screenshots showing the account before the takeover
Provide sensitive information only through the official Steam Support form and only when it requests it. Never post passwords, Steam Guard codes, recovery codes, full gift-card codes, payment-card numbers, .SSFN files, or identity documents in a public forum. Steam Support may request ownership evidence, but it should not need your account password or Steam Guard code.
What if the attacker changed my email and phone number?
Do not try to recover the account through the attacker’s replacement email address. Secure your original email account, then use Steam’s stolen-account workflow. Old Steam emails, receipts, purchase records, previous phone numbers, and former account details can help establish the account’s history.
If you no longer trust the original inbox, secure it first or use a safe email address through the official support form. After submitting a request, watch for fake replies claiming to be Steam Support. Discord accounts, social-media profiles, and strangers in Steam chats are not substitutes for the official support site.
Steam Guard does not make phishing harmless
Steam Guard adds protection, but it cannot compensate for a compromised email account, malware, a stolen authorized session, or a user entering credentials or codes into a fake page. Steam documents these failure modes and describes the mobile authenticator as its strongest Steam Guard option.

What to inspect after Steam restores access
Getting back into the account is only the midpoint. Immediately audit:
Security
- Steam password and email address
- Phone number and recovery information
- Steam Guard configuration
- Authorized devices and active sessions
- Any unfamiliar third-party or API connections shown in the account
Money and inventory
- Recent purchases and refunds
- Wallet balance and payment methods
- Trade history and Market activity
- Market listings, gifts, and unauthorized transactions
Social activity
- Messages sent to friends
- Profile edits and comments
- New groups or trading advertisements
- Links posted from the account
If the account contacted friends with a suspicious link, warn them through another channel. Hijacked accounts are often used to phish the victim’s contacts. Report the offending profile by opening it, selecting the three-dot menu, choosing Report Player, selecting the relevant violation, and submitting the report. Scams that happened mainly outside Steam should also be reported on the platform where the contact occurred.

Account recovery and item recovery are separate issues. Steam distinguishes an account takeover from a completed scam or trade in which a victim voluntarily transferred items and did not receive what was promised.

Steam says it generally does not return items lost in scams because duplicating or rolling back items can affect the value and scarcity of other items in the Steam economy. Do not assume that recovered account access means the inventory will be restored. Document unauthorized trades, purchases, and Market activity and report them through official Steam channels.
If payment information was abused, review Steam’s purchase history, contact the payment provider about unauthorized charges, freeze or replace a compromised card where appropriate, and preserve receipts and transaction records. Also change passwords for payment or shopping accounts that reused the exposed password.
If recovery emails do not arrive
- Check spam and every previously used inbox.
- Confirm that the email account has no unfamiliar forwarding rules or filters.
- Try previous Steam account names, email addresses, and phone numbers.
- Confirm that the support request was fully submitted.
- Follow Steam’s email-verification step when prompted.
Steam’s support forms indicate that a request may not reach support until you enter the verification code and complete submission. If the normal lookup fails, submit the manual form with a clear, consistent ownership history rather than making contradictory claims.
Anyone offering paid recovery through Discord, social media, or Steam chat is another scam. Steam explicitly advises users not to pay the hijacker or follow unofficial recovery instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat I would do differently next time
- Use a unique password for Steam and the email account.
- Use a password manager to create and store unique credentials; Bitwarden offers a free plan, while paid features and prices can change.
- Use the Steam Mobile authenticator.
- Open Steam Support by typing the address manually or using a saved official bookmark.
- Verify the domain before signing in.
- Never share Steam Guard codes or
.SSFNfiles. - Treat “your account was reported” and other urgent threats as likely scams until verified independently.
Paid security software is optional. Windows includes Microsoft Defender scanning, while a product such as Malwarebytes may be useful as a second-opinion scanner or for additional real-time protection. Neither product recovers a Steam account or reverses a password disclosure.
