My bit was not a success.” The remarks are attributed to an IGN30 Icons Series interview, but the available copy is a secondary reproduction in a Reddit search result rather than the original IGN page.
Houser’s comments are a retrospective creative judgment, not a sales report or measured verdict on the game’s reception. He praises the title’s design and digital-noir ambitions while acknowledging that many players did not respond as he hoped.

“I really enjoyed that as an experience. I loved what we did design-wise, the way the game didn’t have loads, the way it felt like a 12-hour movie, some of the visual stuff we did with words on screen. I felt we were creating a really cool digital noir experience, and the consensus at the time was that people hated it.”
“So I got that completely wrong,” Houser reportedly admitted. “I know Sam Lake [creator of Max Payne] well, and he’s a very good guy and really talented. I thought we’d done a good job of doing another Max Payne game. Some people liked it; lots didn’t. So we got it wrong, or I got it wrong. I failed. My bit was not a success. The game is beautifully made, and it wasn’t as successful as it should have been. So I would say a large amount of that failure was on me as one of the people making the decisions and also as the writer, when people really missed his writing.”

Why the distinction between linear and open-world writing matters
Houser describes Max Payne 3 as a more structured writing assignment than an open-world game. In practical terms, a linear campaign lets writers control sequence, pacing, reveals and cinematic transitions more tightly. An open-world script must accommodate player choice, optional missions and events that may occur in different orders.

| Aspect | Linear structure in Houser’s description | Open-world structure |
|---|---|---|
| Story order | Predetermined progression | Potentially variable through exploration and side content |
| Pacing | Writers can plan a continuous dramatic rhythm | Must survive interruptions and player-driven detours |
| Presentation | More control over cinematic staging and visual motifs | Presentation must work across many contexts |
| Writing challenge | Concentrated, tightly sequenced narrative | Branching, systemic or modular narrative delivery |
That structure helped Houser pursue what he calls a “cool digital noir experience.” He also compared the feel to a “12-hour movie.” The phrase is his description of the intended presentation, not a verified playtime measurement.
What he liked about Max Payne 3
His criticism is not a dismissal of the game’s craft. Houser says he enjoyed the experience, liked the design decisions and valued visual techniques such as words appearing on screen. He characterizes the game as “beautifully made” even while saying it was not as successful as it should have been.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
This creates a deliberate split in his assessment:
- Creative execution: He remains positive about the design, visual language and concentrated structure.
- Audience outcome: He believes the result did not connect broadly enough with players.
- Personal accountability: He assigns a “large amount” of the failure to himself as a decision-maker and writer.
What “failure” does—and does not—mean here
In the excerpt, “failure” is Houser’s qualitative assessment of the project’s outcome. He says “some people liked it; lots didn’t,” but no polling, review aggregate or other measurement is supplied. The available material also contains no verified sales total, budget, profit figure or comparison with another Rockstar release.

The Max Payne legacy in Houser’s reflection
Houser specifically names Sam Lake, the creator of the earlier Max Payne games, and says he believed the team had made “another Max Payne game.” His comment that people “really missed his writing” points to a creative-identity problem: even a technically polished sequel can be judged against the voice and tone associated with its predecessor.
That is an interpretation of the quoted passage, not evidence that every player wanted Lake’s writing or that the sequel abandoned the series’ defining qualities. The excerpt only establishes Houser’s own understanding of why the response disappointed him.
How reliable is the quotation?
The wording currently available comes from a Reddit search-result reproduction titled “Dan Houser Considers Max Payne 3 A Failure.” Opening the post produced no independently accessible interview transcript, and a separate attempt to reach the original IGN material was blocked. The source therefore identifies the alleged interview and preserves the excerpt, but it does not provide the complete conversation.
Readers should distinguish three levels of certainty:
- Reported wording: The quoted statements are attributed to Houser in the reproduced excerpt.
- Interpretation: The passage presents his view that the game’s audience response fell short of his goal.
- Unverified context: The complete IGN interview, surrounding questions and any additional qualifications are not available here.
Until the original interview can be checked, the safest description is that Houser reportedly called his contribution unsuccessful and accepted responsibility for the game not reaching as many people as intended.
