To challenge a party of four level-5 adventurers built for close combat, I asked monster designer and author Keith Ammann to create a creature that could exploit their gaps without feeling disconnected from the world. His answer was the Mooncrow: a flying, illusion-wielding hunter shaped for my homebrew setting—and, in my group’s encounter, a fight that kept the players talking afterward.
Designing a monster around the party
My campaign takes place beneath a permanent eclipse, where warmth is scarce and dangerous mutations are part of life. The party was strong in close combat but short on ranged attacks and broad spellcasting. I wanted a moderate challenge for four level-5 characters, not a monster whose abilities felt randomly assembled.
Ammann built the Mooncrow to fit both the party and the setting. It is a flying plains creature with keen eyesight, designed to hunt in small flocks. Its listed type is Monstrosity, though Fey and Aberration were considered as alternatives. That combination gives the creature a place in the world as well as a tactical job in the encounter.
“This isn’t a group that’s going to be subscribing to the New Yorker,” Ammann said of the party’s Intelligence weakness, in the Polygon-syndicated account of the design.

How the Mooncrow pressures the party
The Mooncrow’s abilities target different vulnerabilities rather than repeating the same trick. Mirror Image creates confusion and helps it survive, while Phantasmal Force presses on the party’s weaker Intelligence. Bane can hinder attack rolls, making a group that relies on weapon attacks less dependable. Some of the creature’s attacks deal cold damage, a natural fit for a setting where warmth is scarce.
Its Ecliptic Veil changes its defenses as the fight progresses: the creature’s Armor Class rises as its hit points fall. That trades a larger health pool for stronger protection when it is wounded, rather than simply increasing both defense and hit points. For a DM, that can make the later part of a creature’s life feel different without adding another phase or a separate form.

Why use a flock instead of one powerful monster?
The Mooncrow is listed at Challenge Rating 2 and is intended to hunt in small flocks, not as one oversized solo threat. The syndicated article says I planned five or six of them against four level-5 characters, using a 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide moderate-encounter budget of 2,000–3,000 XP. The same account gives 450 XP for a CR 2 creature and 200 XP for a CR 1 creature, attributing those values to the 2024 guide. The five-or-six-creature count is the article’s application of its cited budget, not a separate rule quotation.
Several enemies change the shape of a fight: they can pressure multiple characters and create more tactical choices, but they also mean more turns and more work for the DM. A flock can suit a creature’s ecology and make it feel dangerous in its natural role; it is not automatically easier to run than a single opponent.

- COMPLETE DM ENCOUNTER: 60 standard 28mm monsters and heroes across 24 unique designs plus 4 oversized boss creatures — enough variety to run horde encounters, boss fights, and random wilderness tables from level 1 to 20. Color-coded in 3 tones so you can distinguish enemy factions on any 1-inch battle mat without base markers.
- BUILT FOR GAME NIGHT, READY IN SECONDS: No assembly, no painting required to hit the table — just open the box and populate your encounter. Works on wet-erase battle maps and dungeon tiles sized for the standard 1-inch grid. Compatible with D&D 5e, Pathfinder, HeroQuest, and virtually any TTRPG system.
- 5E STAT BLOCKS FOR EVERY CREATURE: Every figure includes a downloadable digital stat block and backstory, ready to drop into your next campaign session or one-shot adventure. Makes a great gift for a DM launching a new campaign or a player upgrading from tokens.
- PAINTABLE WHEN YOU’RE READY: Unprimed, injection-molded PVC takes primer and hobby paint like Citadel or Army Painter without warping. Fine enough detail for dry-brushing and ink washes — build your collection over time or run them straight out of the box.
- REPLACEMENT GUARANTEE: Contact us for any broken or defective figure — we replace it promptly so your campaign stays on schedule. We personally answer every email, so reach out if you have any questions.
What happened at the table
In my account of the encounter, characters were knocked down more than once, and the group spent healing and spell resources to get through it. The players kept discussing the fight afterward. That is one group’s experience with this party, this scenario, and the rules context described in the article—not an independently replicated test or a guarantee that the same flock will challenge every level-5 party in the same way.
The illusions also raise a practical table question: players may understand that a creature is using an illusion even when their characters do not. That gap can create enjoyable uncertainty, but it can also feel frustrating if players cannot tell what information their characters have or why an action failed. Before the encounter, decide how you will communicate the effects and what characters can do to recognize or respond to them.

What DMs can take from the Mooncrow
- Start with a specific design problem. Identify what the party handles easily and where it has fewer options, then choose abilities that create pressure without arbitrarily negating character strengths.
- Make the monster belong to the setting. Habitat, appearance, damage types, and hunting behavior can all reinforce the campaign world while supporting the creature’s combat role.
- Change durability with intent. Raising defense as hit points drop produces a different survival curve than simply giving a creature more hit points, but it also makes its defense less predictable.
- Budget for the action economy and the workload. Several lower-CR creatures can create a more involved encounter, but the DM must track and run all of them.
- Use uncertainty carefully. Illusions can complicate decisions; clear, consistent communication about what characters perceive helps keep that uncertainty from becoming confusion at the table.
Where to read more about Ammann’s monster design
Ammann’s revised hardcover, Remonstered! The Monsters Know What They’re Doing, was published October 6, 2026, according to the author’s official site and Simon & Schuster’s catalog. The author says the revised book updates tactics to reflect changes in the 2025 Monster Manual; the original book for 2014 fifth-edition rules remains available. The publisher also lists Making Enemies as a book about designing monsters, including challenge, habitat, motivations, and customization. These are related resources for readers interested in monster design; the cited listings do not establish that the Mooncrow stat block appears in either book.
