Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Yes, World of Warcraft runs on the original ASUS ROG Ally. In a hands-on test published February 24, 2024, it handled flying, questing, world quests and open-world combat well enough to be enjoyable. The bigger problem was not performance: it was fitting WoW’s dense action bars, targeting and menus onto handheld controls. The Ally is a useful secondary WoW device, but a poor replacement for a keyboard-and-mouse setup for raids, high Mythic+ or serious PvP.
What was tested
The device was the original 2023 ROG Ally, not the Ally X or the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally models. It runs Windows 11 and uses AMD Ryzen Z1 or Z1 Extreme processors, 16GB of memory, a 512GB SSD, a 7-inch 1920×1080 120Hz display and a 40Wh battery, according to ASUS’s specifications (ASUS ROG Ally specifications).
The tester installed the standard Blizzard PC client, used a level-70 Dracthyr and tried movement and combat in the open world. The report did not publish a reproducible frame-rate benchmark, frame-time data, WoW-specific battery test or desktop comparison. Its results are therefore a dated qualitative experience from February 2024, not a 2026 performance guarantee.
ASUS’s published performance figures were recorded in specific plugged-in 30W Turbo conditions. They should not be read as battery-powered WoW results.

Getting WoW running
Installation is straightforward because the Ally is a Windows PC, but the first launch was not trouble-free. The tested configuration produced a black screen or freeze. Lowering graphics settings, switching performance modes and dropping the display to 60Hz did not resolve it. Changing the game from DirectX 12 to DirectX 11 did.
That is a troubleshooting result from the 2024 test, not proof that DirectX 11 is still required. Current WoW patches, Windows builds, AMD drivers, BIOS versions and Armoury Crate releases can change the behavior.
A sensible setup sequence
- Update Windows, Armoury Crate SE, the Ally BIOS and AMD graphics drivers.
- Install Battle.net and World of Warcraft, then allow the launcher to finish every update.
- Connect to reliable Wi-Fi before downloading or patching the game.
- Begin with a conservative power profile, 60Hz refresh rate and moderate graphics preset.
- If DirectX 12 produces a black screen or crash, try DirectX 11 as the 2024 report did.
- Enable and configure gamepad control before attempting demanding content.
- Configure action bars while docked or with a Bluetooth/USB keyboard and mouse if available.
The original report used Parsec to control the Ally from another PC during part of setup. That was a convenience, not a requirement for playing WoW.
Controller activation
The tester entered /Console GamePadEnable 1 to switch WoW into gamepad control. Because console commands and UI behavior can change, treat this as the command reported in that test rather than a guaranteed modern fix. It does not automatically produce a complete or comfortable layout: many abilities still require manual assignment.
The real limitation: action-bar density
The Ally has sticks, a D-pad, triggers, bumpers, face buttons and rear buttons, but WoW characters can need far more distinct actions. Modifier layers help—for example, holding a bumper or trigger and pressing a face button—but they do not create the input density of a keyboard, mouse and MMO mouse.
In the hands-on report, roughly 25 abilities were assigned while other combat and utility actions remained inconveniently bound. Mounts, food, drinks, items, interrupts, defensives and movement skills compete for the same limited controls. Some modifier combinations also behaved differently when a modifier was held rather than tapped.
A practical layout approach
- Put frequently used attacks on unmodified face buttons.
- Reserve one modifier layer for defensives, interrupts and movement skills.
- Use another layer for utility, mounts, consumables and less frequent abilities.
- Keep emergency actions on combinations that are easy to hold and press together.
- Use HUD Edit Mode and reduce action-bar scale rather than trying to configure everything on the small touchscreen.
- Test every binding against a training target before entering group content.
A compact keyboard and mouse or a USB-C dock makes character setup, text entry, HUD editing and recovery from cursor problems substantially easier.
How movement, targeting and combat feel
Basic movement is the Ally’s strength. Flying, travelling through zones, gathering, exploring and fighting ordinary enemies feel natural once the sticks and camera are configured. The 2024 tester also completed world quests and defeated an elite open-world enemy.

Targeting is more consequential than simply having fewer buttons. The report describes D-pad targeting that selected the nearest target, an on-screen cursor that did not always appear reliably and awkward transitions between movement and cursor control. Opening the map could leave the device in cursor mode after the map was closed, requiring another cursor toggle before normal movement returned.
That friction matters in crowded pulls, interrupt checks, dispels, focus-target work and any fight requiring rapid target swaps. It is manageable for relaxed solo play, but increasingly costly as reaction time and precision matter more.
If the cursor or controls appear stuck
- Toggle the Ally’s cursor/control mode once, then test movement.
- Check whether opening the map left WoW in cursor mode.
- Use the touchscreen or a mouse for menus when controller focus becomes unclear.
- For an ability that fails, confirm it is actually bound and simplify the modifier combination.
Which WoW activities suit the Ally?
| Activity | Suitability | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Questing and leveling | Good | Movement and routine combat are relatively low pressure. |
| World quests | Good to acceptable | Successfully completed in the 2024 hands-on test. |
| Gathering and exploration | Good | Limited combat complexity and lots of traversal. |
| Transmog, collections and professions | Good | Mostly menus, travel and occasional combat. |
| Casual open-world elites | Acceptable | Possible, but depends on class and bindings. |
| Normal dungeons | Conditional | Role, class complexity and your tolerance for targeting friction matter. |
| Mythic+ | Poor fit for most players | Time pressure and precise interrupts, targeting and rotations expose control limits. |
| Raids | Poor fit for most players | Many abilities, mechanics and target demands compete for limited inputs. |
| Rated PvP | Poor fit for most players | Fast target selection and reaction windows are difficult on the built-in controls. |
| Unrated battlegrounds | Conditional | More forgiving than rated play, but still control-limited. |
Class and specialization choice matters
There is no universal “playable class” list. A solo-friendly specialization with a compact rotation is easier than a healer, support role or high-complexity DPS specialization that needs frequent target swaps, crowd control, dispels, ground targeting and instant reactions.
Players comfortable with modifier layers can stretch the controls further. Players who depend on many simultaneous keybinds or precise mouse targeting will reach the Ally’s limits sooner. This is practical guidance from the input constraints, not a measured ranking of every class.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGraphics, power and battery trade-offs
The 1080p 120Hz panel gives the Ally flexibility, not unlimited battery life. Higher wattage and visual settings provide more performance headroom while shortening unplugged play. A 60Hz mode, lower resolution, frame-rate cap and conservative power profile are sensible starting points for handheld sessions. Plugged-in Turbo mode should not be treated as representative of portable use.
ASUS rates the original Ally’s 40Wh battery for up to 1.5 hours of heavy gaming under its stated test conditions. Windows Central measured about 1 hour 38 minutes in a 15W gaming test and slightly more than three hours only after aggressively reducing power, resolution, refresh rate, frame rate and brightness (Windows Central’s ROG Ally review). Neither figure is a controlled WoW measurement, so actual runtime will vary with settings, wireless activity, brightness and the zone being played.

The 2024 ROG Ally X is materially better hardware for long WoW sessions: ASUS lists a Ryzen Z1 Extreme, up to 24GB of memory, 1TB or 2TB storage configurations, an 80Wh battery, two USB-C ports and a 1920×1080 120Hz display (Ally X specifications). ASUS’s US support/store listing showed a $799.99 price signal when captured (Ally X product listing).
The larger battery, extra memory and added connectivity improve endurance and setup flexibility, but they do not solve WoW’s fundamental action-bar and targeting problem. The 2024 Ally X is a better handheld platform; it is not a magic replacement for a keyboard and mouse. The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X is a separate generation and should not inherit the original Ally’s test results.

Can it replace a gaming PC?
For most serious WoW players, no. The Ally can supplement a desktop with daily activities, farming, world content, leveling, collections and casual sessions from a couch or while travelling. It is a poor primary machine for progression raiding, high-level Mythic+, competitive PvP, high-ability-count play or long demanding sessions away from a charger.
A laptop or desktop remains the better fit when full keyboard-and-mouse precision is non-negotiable. A docked Ally can narrow the gap, while remote play from a desktop can combine desktop performance with handheld convenience, provided the network is reliable.
Who should use or buy one for WoW?
Good reasons
- You already own the original Ally.
- You mainly play solo, open-world or collection content.
- You want a secondary device for travel or couch sessions.
- You are willing to customize bindings and occasionally use a mouse and keyboard.
- You can play near a charger or accept shorter sessions.
Reasons to choose something else
- Your priority is raiding, high Mythic+, rated PvP or fast target-heavy play.
- You use a specialization with a very large active ability set.
- You expect console-like simplicity from Windows.
- You want several hours of demanding play on battery.
- You dislike adapting rotations and targeting to modifier layers.
If buying specifically for WoW, consider the Ally X only if its longer battery and newer hardware justify the price. Consider the original Ally only when it is substantially discounted or you already own it. A dock, charger and compact keyboard/mouse may improve usability more than a small graphics-setting change.
Verdict
The original ASUS ROG Ally can run World of Warcraft and is genuinely enjoyable for questing, flying, gathering, world quests, exploration and other low-pressure activities. The 2024 test’s DirectX 11 workaround shows that launch problems can occur, but it should be treated as dated troubleshooting guidance rather than a permanent requirement.
The decisive compromise is the interface. Limited physical inputs, crowded action bars, inconsistent cursor transitions and awkward targeting make demanding group content substantially less comfortable. Use the Ally as a portable companion to a full PC, not as a seamless handheld replacement for one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was the test performed on the ROG Ally X?
No. The hands-on report used the original 2023 ROG Ally and was published February 24, 2024.
Does the Ally guarantee 60 frames per second in WoW?
No. The available report did not provide a reproducible frame-rate benchmark, so no universal FPS claim is justified.
Is DirectX 11 permanently required?
No. DirectX 11 fixed the black-screen problem in that 2024 test. Current drivers and game builds may behave differently.
