Yes—but the feature NVIDIA keeps exclusive to RTX 50 is DLSS Multi Frame Generation, not DLSS 4 as a whole. RTX 40 cards still support ordinary DLSS Frame Generation, which inserts one AI-generated frame between rendered frames. RTX 30 cards support neither form of Frame Generation. Both generations can still use other DLSS features, including Super Resolution, when a game and its implementation support them. NVIDIA’s current DLSS 4.5 materials keep Multi Frame Generation, including Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, on RTX 50-series hardware.
DLSS feature support by GPU generation
This is a high-level guide, not a guarantee that every option appears in every game. Support can depend on the game, its DLSS integration, driver and NVIDIA App override availability. NVIDIA’s DLSS developer documentation and override guidance describe the generation split.

What Multi Frame Generation does—and what the multiplier means
Traditional rendering produces the frames built from the game’s simulation and graphics workload. Ordinary DLSS Frame Generation, available on RTX 40 and 50, adds one AI-generated frame between rendered frames. Multi Frame Generation can insert several generated frames for each traditionally rendered frame. NVIDIA’s current developer page describes generation of up to five additional frames per rendered frame on GeForce RTX 50-series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs.
A 6x mode therefore does not mean six fully rendered frames, six times as much game simulation, or the same responsiveness as rendering six times faster. It describes the output sequence, which combines a rendered frame with generated frames. NVIDIA demonstrated more than an 8x performance multiplier in a Cyberpunk 2077 example using an RTX 5090; that is a vendor-selected result, not a typical or guaranteed gain across games. See NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 announcement.

Why Multi Frame Generation is limited to RTX 50
NVIDIA attributes the feature to Blackwell hardware and a redesigned model, including fifth-generation Tensor Cores and changes intended to run the neural network efficiently within the time available to generate frames. NVIDIA’s Blackwell architecture material and DLSS 4 technical paper explain the hardware and model work. NVIDIA says its DLSS 4 Frame Generation model is 40% faster and uses 30% less VRAM than the previous method; those are NVIDIA’s stated comparisons, not universal independent measurements.
The firm compatibility point is NVIDIA’s policy: its current documentation reserves Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50-series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs. NVIDIA has not promised a backport to RTX 40 or 30. That does not establish that every aspect of the restriction is physically impossible to change in software; it does mean a driver or app update cannot currently turn an RTX 40 or 30 card into an officially supported Multi Frame Generation GPU.

What RTX 40 owners still get
RTX 40 cards retain ordinary DLSS Frame Generation and can receive newer Frame Generation models through supported game or NVIDIA App paths. They also retain Super Resolution, DLAA and Ray Reconstruction in titles that support those features. NVIDIA’s override documentation distinguishes updated ordinary Frame Generation for RTX 40 and 50 from Multi Frame Generation, which remains RTX 50-only.
That means an RTX 4080 or 4090 is not shut out of DLSS improvements generally. It cannot use Multi Frame Generation or DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, but newer models for supported features may improve the result without changing the GPU.

What RTX 30 owners still get
RTX 30 cards can use DLSS Super Resolution and, in supported games, DLAA and Ray Reconstruction. NVIDIA’s newer transformer-based Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction models can extend to older RTX GPUs, but whether they are available depends on the title, driver, DLSS integration and NVIDIA App override path.
RTX 30 does not support DLSS Frame Generation, so it has no ordinary Frame Generation path to update. A newer Super Resolution model may alter image reconstruction, but it cannot add either form of DLSS Frame Generation to the card.

What DLSS 4.5 changes
DLSS 4 introduced Multi Frame Generation alongside first-generation transformer-model improvements. Announced in January 2026, DLSS 4.5 adds a second-generation transformer model and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, which adjusts the number of generated frames; NVIDIA describes modes that generate up to five additional frames, or 6x output. The updated reconstruction model is not restricted in the same way as the multi-frame features, but Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and its higher multipliers remain RTX 50 features. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 announcement and RTX 50-series feature information set out that distinction.
Why generated FPS is not the same as native performance
Generated frames can make motion look smoother, but they do not make the CPU simulate more frames or cause the game to process input at the displayed FPS. NVIDIA pairs Frame Generation with Reflex to address latency, but a high generated frame counter does not mean responsiveness matches the same native frame rate. A high or unstable frame-generation multiplier is also not a fix for a low base frame rate, CPU bottleneck or uneven frame pacing.

Interpolation can produce visual artifacts around fast movement, particles, foliage, interface elements and newly revealed areas. Results depend on image content, motion-vector data, the game’s implementation and the selected model. Native game support is generally the better-integrated route because it can coordinate motion vectors, UI handling, frame pacing and Reflex. The NVIDIA App can apply DLSS overrides in supported games that have not adopted newer versions, but an override cannot bypass the GPU-generation limit. See NVIDIA’s DLSS override instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you upgrade for Multi Frame Generation?
- Keep an RTX 30 card if its raw performance and DLSS Super Resolution meet your needs. Consider upgrading for broader performance reasons if they do not; generated frames alone are not a capability the card can add.
- Keep an RTX 40 card if ordinary Frame Generation and current performance are sufficient. An upgrade is more compelling if you play supported demanding ray-traced games, have a high-refresh display, and specifically want Multi Frame Generation—not simply because an FPS counter could rise.
- Consider RTX 50 when the games you play support the feature, your base performance is already adequate, and your monitor can display the resulting output. The same GPU may also bring other Blackwell capabilities, but Multi Frame Generation does not remove CPU limits or guarantee artifact-free output.
- Do not buy solely for a multiplier if your main problem is weak native performance, a CPU bottleneck, competitive-game latency, image clarity, insufficient monitor refresh or a large price premium over a satisfactory card.
If shopping, treat launch prices as historical official starting-price signals, not current prices or guaranteed street prices. NVIDIA announced starting prices of $299 for RTX 5060, $379 for RTX 5060 Ti, $549 for RTX 5070, $749 for RTX 5070 Ti, $999 for RTX 5080 and $1,999 for RTX 5090; configurations and actual retailer prices vary. The figures were announced in NVIDIA’s launch material and product pages: RTX 50 launch information, RTX 5060 family, RTX 5070 family, RTX 5080 and RTX 5090. AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT launch material listed a $599 launch price; it is an alternative for buyers willing to use AMD’s FSR ecosystem, not a route to NVIDIA DLSS Multi Frame Generation: AMD launch material.
