Compared with Idol Manager, which centers on running an idol agency, the key difference is scope—solving cast-and-story puzzles versus managing a wider entertainment business.
What kind of game is I Want to Play the Villain!?
The official Steam listing describes it as a “theatre-themed logic puzzle game.” The title’s “villain” framing is about roles in a theatrical production, not running an evil empire.
The central task is to create a show by assigning actors to roles. The puzzle is shaped by what individual characters want, fear, aspire to, and prefer to play. Costumes and changes to the story add further constraints or affect how a performance comes together. The listing says chapters introduce distinct settings, characters, mechanics, and stories.
How does it differ from an actor-management simulator?
Here, “management” is chiefly about arranging a cast and production to satisfy character-specific conditions. The official description emphasizes matching actors, roles, costumes, and story elements; it does not present the game as a simulation of an actor’s career or the day-to-day running of a talent agency.

That distinction matters if you are choosing a game for its systems. This is framed around discrete theatre puzzles and performances. Its chapter structure suggests a series of authored scenarios, but the listing does not establish the finished game’s chapter count, length, replay depth, or difficulty curve.
How does it compare with Idol Manager?
Idol Manager is a useful neighboring example, not a like-for-like substitute. Its Steam listing presents it as a business simulation about operating an idol agency, developing performers, and building agency operations. The comparison below reflects the games’ store descriptions, not a fresh hands-on test of both.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose I Want to Play the Villain! if you want to work out who belongs in which role and how preferences, costumes, and story changes fit together.
- Choose Idol Manager if you want the broader task of operating an entertainment agency rather than primarily solving individual casting puzzles.
Other games may use actors or performers in very different ways, so this contrast should not be treated as a verdict on every game described as actor management.

On October 4, 2026, Steam showed the demo with 12 user reviews and a 100% positive rating. That is a small, changeable sample for the demo—not a representative measure of the full game’s reception. Because the full game had not been released at that point, its eventual scope and quality could not be assessed from the listing or demo rating alone.
Pocket Gamer’s first impressions also describe the premise as keeping actors happy by fitting roles to their preferences, with plot and role changes adding a puzzle layer. That characterization is consistent with the official listing’s puzzle framing, rather than an actor-career simulation.
