Is I Want to Play the Villain! Worth Playing? What to Know About Its Gameplay

I Want to Play the Villain! is described as a theatre-themed logic puzzle, not a confirmed management sim. Here’s what its demo, planned release, and listings tell you.

I Want to Play the Villain! looks worth trying if theatre-themed logic puzzles appeal to you—but it is not established as a management simulation. Its central challenge is matching actors to roles while accounting for each character’s wishes, fears, ambitions, and relationships. The full game is planned for Q1 2027, while Steam lists a free demo released August 17, 2026, so the demo is the practical way to judge the puzzle loop for yourself.

What kind of game is I Want to Play the Villain!?

Steam describes I Want to Play the Villain! as a “theatre-themed logic puzzle game.” The task is to match actors to roles and create a performance that satisfies their individual preferences. You can rearrange the cast, costumes, and story; character relationships and the details of a particular chapter inform the puzzle.

That can loosely be called cast management, but the available description supports a puzzle about arranging characters—not a simulation of running a theatre, managing staff, or balancing business resources. If you are looking for budgets, schedules, or operational systems, those are not established features.

How does the gameplay work?

Assign actors to roles

Each actor has ambitions, fears, wishes, and favorite roles. Your job is to work out which actor belongs in which part while respecting those preferences. The appeal is in interpreting constraints and finding an arrangement that makes the show work, rather than directing actors through a conventional performance simulation.

Change the story and cast

Steam says the stories are modular: changing the cast, costumes, or story can change a performance and its outcome. Chapters are described as introducing different settings, characters, mechanics, and stories. Those features suggest variety in the puzzles, though the extent of replayability has not been independently established.

Is it worth playing?

The answer depends on whether you want a character-driven logic puzzle or a management sim. If assigning characters to roles, untangling their preferences, and experimenting with story configurations sounds satisfying, the free demo is a low-commitment way to see whether the core idea works for you. If you specifically want theatre-business management, the published description does not support that expectation.

Who should try the demo?

  • Try it if you enjoy logic puzzles built around character preferences and role assignments.
  • Try it if you are curious about changing a cast or story to see how the resulting performance differs.
  • Wait or look elsewhere if your main interest is running a theatre through budgets, staffing, or other management systems; those mechanics are not established by the published description.
  • Check carefully if you intend to play on Steam Deck, since its compatibility is listed as unknown, or rely on a particular controller setup.

The most grounded recommendation is to start with the free demo and decide based on the actual puzzle experience. A verdict on the unreleased full game would be premature.
