Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, write down:
- Which program shows the error
- Whether it happens when Windows starts or only when one application opens
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit, if known
- Whether the problem began after Windows Update, an uninstall, antivirus activity, cleanup, or a failed repair
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteicmui.dll is a Microsoft Windows system DLL used by the Windows Color Management API. It supports color-management dialog functions such as SetupColorMatchingA and SetupColorMatchingW, so an error involving this file usually points to a damaged, deleted, quarantined, or mismatched Windows component rather than a missing Visual C++ or DirectX runtime.
Do not download icmui.dll from a random DLL website. A replacement can have the wrong architecture, Windows build, signature, or malicious content, and copying it into a system folder often leaves the underlying problem untouched.
What icmui.dll does and where it belongs
The normal location depends on the application architecture:
- On 64-bit Windows, the 64-bit system copy normally belongs in
%WINDIR%System32. - The 32-bit system copy normally belongs in
%WINDIR%SysWOW64.
The names can be confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is normally used by 64-bit processes, while SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit system files used by 32-bit processes. Windows redirects a 32-bit application’s system-file requests accordingly.
#1 Best Overall
The file is part of Windows, not a separately installed Microsoft redistributable. File versions and sizes vary by Windows release and servicing level, so there is no universal “latest icmui.dll” that should be copied to every computer.
Recognize the error
The wording depends on Windows and the application. You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because icmui.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “icmui.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading icmui.dll.”
- “icmui.dll could not be loaded.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because icmui.dll was not found.”
- “icmui.dll is corrupted.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly because icmui.dll was missing.”
A missing-file message does not always prove that icmui.dll itself is absent. Windows may be reporting the first named file in a chain where another dependency, an incorrect application search path, or a damaged installation is the real cause.
If several applications or Windows features fail, treat this as a Windows component problem. If only one program fails and Windows repair tools report no problems, focus on repairing that program.
Fix 1: Install updates and restart
An incomplete update, rollback, or pending restart can leave protected Windows files in an inconsistent state.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart Windows, even if Settings does not immediately require it.
- Open the affected program again.
If the error remains, continue with the repair commands below. Do not manually replace the DLL before running them.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management, or DISM, before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source for replacing damaged protected files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the command to finish. It may appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window during the operation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Run SFC
After DISM completes, enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the affected program.
A successful repair may report that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If the program starts normally afterward, no separate DLL download is needed.
If DISM reports that it cannot find repair source files, install pending updates and try again. If Windows Update itself is damaged, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with DISM’s /Source option. Use a source that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture, not a downloaded DLL.
For readers who prefer a guided scan instead of repeatedly hunting through repair logs and rerunning SFC or DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show detected issues in its free scan; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows’ built-in DISM and SFC remain the correct first-line repair for icmui.dll.

Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined a legitimate system file, but do not restore it merely because an application requests it. First verify the detection and the original file path.
- Open Start and type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
icmui.dllor a Windows system directory.
If Microsoft Defender identifies a genuine threat, leave the file quarantined and investigate the malware. If the detection appears to be a false positive, confirm that the item was the Microsoft-signed file from the expected Windows directory before considering restoration.
After addressing the detection:
- Run a Full scan from Virus & threat protection.
- If malware is suspected or the file keeps disappearing, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
- Restart and test the application.
If third-party security software is installed, review its quarantine and detection history as well. Repeated removal can indicate malware, a false positive, or a damaged file that is being replaced incorrectly.

Fix 4: Repair the affected application
If only one application fails while other programs and Windows features work normally, the application may have a damaged installation or an incorrect private DLL search path.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the program’s own repair option first:
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its More button, usually shown as three dots.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair and test the program.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select the program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
For a game, use the launcher’s official Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files command before reinstalling the entire game. The exact menu name varies by launcher.
If repair fails, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer. Do not copy icmui.dll into the program folder as a substitute for repairing the installation.
A program-only failure can also involve another missing dependency. Reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET only when the complete error identifies that runtime or the application’s official support instructions require it. icmui.dll itself is not a verified Visual C++ or DirectX redistributable file.
Fix 5: Check system architecture and file paths
A 32-bit application can require the 32-bit Windows copy even on 64-bit Windows.
To check the installed Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Find System type.
To inspect the normal directories:
- Press Windows + E.
- Select This PC, then open the Windows drive.
- Open
WindowsSystem32. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
WindowsSysWOW64.
Do not assume that finding a file with the correct name proves it is usable. A file in the wrong directory may not be selected by the loader. A “not found” message can also mean that a dependency of icmui.dll failed to load.
Check the file’s properties before escalating:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
The exact version and size can differ between Windows builds. Do not use a file inventory from another Windows installation as proof that your file should have the same metadata.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall a related display driver only when evidence points there
icmui.dll is a Windows color-management component, not a vendor-specific display-driver DLL. Reinstalling a graphics driver is therefore not the primary fix. Consider it only when the error began with a display-driver change and Device Manager shows a related problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the listed adapter.
- Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
- If Windows reports a device problem, select Update driver and follow the prompts.
- If the issue began immediately after an update, check whether Roll Back Driver is available.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Use the computer or graphics-device manufacturer’s official driver page when Windows does not provide a suitable driver. Avoid driver packages from unofficial download pages.
When manually checking many driver versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can show outdated drivers in its free scan; driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and a driver update is not a replacement for repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected program.

If the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, application installation, or system setting change, System Restore may revert the affected system files and registry settings without removing personal documents.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Follow the wizard to complete the restoration.
- Restart and test the program.
System Restore is not available on every installation and does not replace a backup. If Windows cannot boot normally, access it through Windows Recovery Environment.
Why regsvr32 icmui.dll is usually wrong
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for restoring every DLL.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The documented role of icmui.dll is to provide color-management functions, not a documented COM registration interface. Running:
regsvr32 icmui.dll
may produce an entry-point error and will not restore a missing or corrupted Windows component. Use DISM and SFC instead.
Best Value
If SFC cannot repair the file
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them:
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM again from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain. - Review the SFC details in:
%WINDIR%LogsCBSCBS.log
If DISM cannot use Windows Update as its repair source, use a matching Windows installation source as documented by Microsoft. Do not substitute a DLL from another computer unless Microsoft’s advanced procedure identifies the exact protected file and you have a known-good copy from the same Windows version and architecture.

FAQ
Is icmui.dll a virus?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows component. Malware can use the same filename, so verify its location and Microsoft digital signature rather than trusting the name alone.
Should I download icmui.dll separately?
No. There is no verified Microsoft redistributable package whose purpose is to install this file. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or an official Windows repair path.
Why does a 32-bit program need SysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit processes are redirected to the 32-bit system directory. That is why a 32-bit application may need the SysWOW64 copy even when the operating system itself is 64-bit.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I need to reinstall Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not as a first response. icmui.dll is a Windows color-management component. Reinstall those runtimes only if the complete application error specifically identifies one of them.
What if only one application still fails?
Repair or reinstall that application from its official installer. If DISM and SFC report no integrity problems, the application or another dependency is more likely to be responsible.
Should I use Device Manager or reinstall my graphics driver?
Only when the problem coincides with a driver change or Device Manager reports a display-device issue. Driver reinstall is not the normal repair for icmui.dll.
