The icons.dll error usually means IrfanView’s Icons plug-in is missing, damaged, quarantined, or mismatched with your installation. It is not a Windows system DLL, and copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 is not the correct repair.

- The error appeared after reinstalling or updating IrfanView: reinstall IrfanView, then install the matching plug-in package.
- IrfanView opens, but file icons are wrong: the plug-in or Windows file associations may be affected. Start with an IrfanView repair.
- The message names an IrfanView
PlugInsfolder: restore the file to that installation through the official IrfanView installer. - Windows Security shows a recent quarantine: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The file exists, but Windows reports “specified module could not be found”: a dependency may be missing, not
icons.dllitself. - The message says “Bad Image” or includes
0xc000012f: suspect corruption or a wrong-architecture DLL. - Several unrelated programs show DLL or Bad Image errors: investigate Windows or storage corruption with DISM and SFC.
- The problem began after a system or software change: System Restore may be appropriate.
- You downloaded a replacement DLL from a random site: remove it and reinstall IrfanView from its official source.
What is icons.dll
icons.dll is the IrfanView ICONS plug-in, described by IrfanView as providing additional icons for IrfanView file associations. The file is associated with IrfanView, developed by Irfan Skiljan, rather than with Windows itself.

The official IrfanView plug-in list identifies the ICONS plug-in separately and lists it as version 4.30. The normal IrfanView installation already includes the Icons plug-in among its important plug-ins. Do not treat the program package version as the version of icons.dll.
The file should normally be under IrfanView’s installation directory, in its PlugIns folder. It does not ordinarily belong in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- another application’s folder
- a game installation directory
Windows searches an application’s own directory before system directories. A misplaced copy can therefore be loaded instead of the correct plug-in, creating a compatibility or security problem.
Fix 1: Reinstall IrfanView and its plug-ins
This is the safest and most likely solution for a missing or damaged icons.dll.
Check the path first
- Read the complete path shown in the error.
- If the path points to an IrfanView folder, note the installation location.
- Open File Explorer and browse to that folder.
- Open the
PlugInssubfolder. - Check whether
icons.dllis present.
If it is absent, do not download a loose replacement. Close IrfanView and continue with a clean installation.
Reinstall the main program
- Close IrfanView.
- Download the current IrfanView installer from the official IrfanView website.
- Run the installer.
- If Windows displays a User Account Control prompt, select Yes.
- Install IrfanView into the intended location.
- Start IrfanView and check whether it opens without the error.
If the installer offers to repair or replace an existing installation, allow it to do so. If it does not, uninstalling IrfanView first can help, but preserve any settings or custom plug-ins you need.
Install the matching plug-in package
If icons.dll is still missing:
- Open the official IrfanView plug-in download page.
- Download the plug-in package matching your IrfanView installation.
- Run the plug-in installer.
- When asked for a destination, select the IrfanView
PlugInsdirectory. - Finish the installation.
- Reopen IrfanView.
The result is successful when the application starts normally and the icons.dll error no longer appears. If the error remains, verify that the installer placed files in the same IrfanView directory named by the error.

IrfanView provides separate 32-bit and 64-bit program and plug-in packages. It also provides an ARM64 package. These packages are not interchangeable.
To check which IrfanView build you have:
- Open IrfanView if possible.
- Select Help.
- Select About IrfanView.
- Note whether it identifies itself as 32-bit or 64-bit.
If IrfanView will not start:
- Right-click the IrfanView shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Select the Shortcut tab and choose Open File Location.
- Check whether the program is installed under
C:Program FilesorC:Program Files (x86). - Use the installer or program documentation to confirm the architecture rather than relying only on the folder name.
Install:
- 32-bit IrfanView with 32-bit plug-ins
- 64-bit IrfanView with 64-bit plug-ins
- ARM64 IrfanView with ARM64 plug-ins
Do not merge plug-in files between Program Files and Program Files (x86). If you installed the wrong package, remove the mismatched plug-in set and reinstall the correct main program and plug-ins together.
The repair worked when the program and plug-in directories belong to the same installation and the error disappears after restarting IrfanView.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a plug-in after an update, reinstall, or scan. Do not assume that every detection is a false positive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
icons.dllor the IrfanView installation folder. - Open the detection details.
- Check the file path and the detection name.
- Restore the file only if the original IrfanView installation and its source are trustworthy.
- If there is any doubt, reinstall IrfanView and its plug-ins instead of restoring the quarantined copy.
Microsoft warns that allowing a genuinely malicious file can put the device at risk. Reinstalling from the official IrfanView source is preferable to approving an unknown file.
If Windows Security quarantines the file again immediately after reinstalling, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection. Do not repeatedly restore the same file without checking its provenance.
Fix 4: Undo cleanup or restore software changes
Cleanup utilities, “washer” programs, rollback software, and restore tools can remove plug-in files or reverse an installation.
IrfanView’s FAQ warns that cleanup software can delete IrfanView files or settings. If the error returns after every reboot:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Temporarily stop the cleanup or rollback utility.
- Reinstall IrfanView and its plug-ins.
- Add the IrfanView installation directory to the utility’s exclusions, if supported.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether
icons.dllremains in thePlugInsfolder.
If the file disappears again, the cleanup or rollback product is undoing the repair. Its settings must be corrected before reinstalling repeatedly.
Fix 5: Distinguish a missing file from a missing dependency
These messages do not always mean the named DLL itself is absent:
- “Error loading icons.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load icons.dll.”
- “The program can’t start because icons.dll is missing from your computer.”
Windows can report that a module could not be found when icons.dll exists but one of its required dependencies is unavailable or incompatible.
Check the following:
- Confirm that
icons.dllexists in the IrfanViewPlugInsfolder. - Confirm that the plug-in matches the IrfanView architecture.
- Reinstall the complete IrfanView program and plug-in package.
- Do not guess at individual runtime downloads.
- If the error identifies another DLL by name, troubleshoot that named component instead.
Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a justified first response unless the error specifically identifies a related runtime or IrfanView documentation requires it. IrfanView’s complete official package is the safer starting point.
Fix 6: Handle a “Bad Image” error
A message such as:
icons.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.Rank #3

may appear with status 0xc000012f. This generally points to corruption, an incompatible architecture, or an invalid DLL rather than a simple missing-file condition.
- Close IrfanView.
- Delete or move aside any manually replaced copy of
icons.dll. - Reinstall the correct IrfanView program.
- Install the matching plug-in package.
- Restart Windows.
- Test IrfanView again.
Do not replace the file with a same-named DLL from another product. A file with the correct name can still be incompatible or unsafe.
Fix 7: Repair broader Windows component corruption
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party IrfanView plug-in, so use them when several unrelated applications show corruption errors or Windows itself is behaving abnormally.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall IrfanView if
icons.dllis still missing.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands report that Windows is healthy but IrfanView still fails, return to the IrfanView installer and plug-in package rather than repeating the commands.
When manually hunting through Windows component repairs and rerunning DISM or SFC without knowing what changed becomes time-consuming, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues; its free scan identifies problems, while repair features require the full version. Reinstalling IrfanView remains the definitive fix for an IrfanView-owned plug-in.
Fix 8: Update Windows only for broader compatibility problems
Windows Update is relevant when the error started alongside wider operating-system failures, compatibility problems, or repeated application crashes.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test IrfanView again.
Do not expect Windows Update to supply icons.dll. The file belongs to IrfanView.
Fix 9: Check drivers only when other symptoms point there
A display or storage driver is not the normal source of IrfanView’s Icons plug-in. Consider a driver repair only if the icons.dll message appeared with broader graphics, storage, or device failures.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Disk drives.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver date and status.
- Use Update Driver only when an appropriate driver is available from the device manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not uninstall a working driver merely because icons.dll is missing. If a driver change caused the broader problem, use Roll Back Driver when available.
When identifying outdated drivers manually means checking many devices and guessing which version matters, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show reported driver issues; the free scan identifies problems, while driver installation features require the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling IrfanView when the failure is isolated to this plug-in.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 10: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore can help when the problem began immediately after software installation, an update, or another system change.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Type
Create a restore point. - Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system settings and installed programs but does not remove personal files. It is not a replacement for reinstalling IrfanView, and it cannot help if no suitable restore point exists.

Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
Do not run this command merely because a file ends in .dll:
regsvr32 icons.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. IrfanView’s Icons plug-in is normally loaded by IrfanView from its PlugIns directory. It is not normally registered globally.
Running regsvr32 may produce:
DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.
That result does not repair the missing plug-in. Use the IrfanView installer instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAvoid random DLL download sites
A loose download of icons.dll can have the wrong version, architecture, or contents. It may also be altered or bundled with malware. Even a genuine-looking replacement often fails because the real problem is a damaged installation, a missing dependency, or mismatched 32-bit and 64-bit files.
Use the official IrfanView installer and official plug-in package. Keep the file in the IrfanView PlugIns directory. Never copy it into System32 or SysWOW64 as a general fix.
Prevention
- Keep the IrfanView program and plug-ins from matching architecture packages.
- Do not mix files from separate IrfanView installations.
- Exclude the IrfanView directory from cleanup software that removes unused files.
- Review antivirus detections before restoring quarantined files.
- Do not manually replace plug-ins with same-named files from another product.
- Keep a note of IrfanView’s installation path before moving or restoring the program.
- If only file-association icons are wrong while IrfanView opens normally, investigate Windows associations or the icon cache instead of assuming
icons.dllis missing.
FAQ
Is icons.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with IrfanView’s ICONS plug-in and is not a normal Windows system component.
Where should icons.dll be located?
Normally in the PlugIns directory inside the IrfanView installation. The exact path depends on where IrfanView was installed.
Can I download only icons.dll?
Avoid downloading it from an unverified DLL archive. Reinstall IrfanView or its matching official plug-in package instead.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. That can cause Windows to load the wrong copy and creates unnecessary compatibility and security risks.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a first response. Reinstall the complete IrfanView package first. Install a runtime only when the error specifically identifies it or the vendor documentation requires it.
Why does Windows say a module is missing when the file exists?
One of icons.dll’s dependencies may be missing, or the file may be corrupt or built for the wrong architecture. Reinstalling the complete matching package is safer than replacing individual DLLs.
What information should I provide if the problem continues?
Record the exact error text, the full path shown, the IrfanView version and architecture, the installation location, whether icons.dll exists in PlugIns, and whether Windows Security quarantined it.
