The 60-second answer
idmnetmon64.dll is the 64-bit Internet Download Manager Network Monitor module. It belongs to Internet Download Manager from Tonec, not to Windows, DirectX, .NET, or the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime.
The safest repair is to close IDM and run the current installer from Tonec’s official Internet Download Manager download page. Install it over the existing copy, restart Windows, and then check Help → Check for updates… inside IDM.
Do not download this DLL from a random DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. That can install malware, introduce the wrong version or architecture, and leave the damaged IDM installation untouched.

What idmnetmon64.dll does
The file is an application component used by Internet Download Manager’s network monitoring and integration features. The 64 identifies this particular module as 64-bit. It does not prove that every IDM component or every process interacting with IDM is 64-bit.
A normal installation commonly places the file under:
C:Program Files (x86)Internet Download Manager
The folder name does not by itself indicate a problem. Many 32-bit applications install under Program Files (x86) while also containing selected 64-bit components.
Reported file records include these 64-bit builds:
| Version | Approximate size |
|---|---|
| 6.35.15.198 | 0.38 MB |
| 6.23.12.95 | 0.28 MB |
| 6.20.3.83 | 0.23 MB |
| 6.15.10.42 | 0.16 MB |
These records are file metadata, not a complete official Tonec compatibility list. Do not select a replacement solely because it is the newest listed file.

Why the error appears
The usual causes are:
- An incomplete IDM update or damaged installation
- Antivirus quarantine or deletion
- Manual deletion by a cleanup utility
- A mismatched DLL copied from another computer
- A browser or Explorer integration conflict
- Disk or file-system corruption
- An unofficial, modified, or cracked IDM installation
- A missing dependency reported as “the specified module could not be found”
A missing-file message does not always mean the named file alone is absent. Windows may be unable to load one of its dependencies.
Fix 1: Update or reinstall IDM from Tonec
This is the most likely fix for a missing, corrupt, or incompatible copy.
- Save or pause active downloads if necessary.
- Exit Internet Download Manager completely. Check the notification area near the clock and close IDM from its tray menu.
- Open Tonec’s official Internet Download Manager download page in your browser.
- Download the current official installer.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Allow it to update or reinstall the existing IDM installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Open IDM and select Help → Check for updates….
Test the result by opening IDM and starting a small download. If the error no longer appears and browser integration works normally, the repaired installation supplied the correct module.

If the installer says IDM is already installed but the error remains, uninstall the damaged copy first:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Internet Download Manager.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Install IDM again using the official Tonec installer.
- Re-enable only the official IDM browser integration extension if you need it.
You can also use Control Panel → Programs and Features if the application is not listed in Settings.
Back up important download-list information before removing IDM if you rely on its saved queues or unfinished downloads. An IDM folder left behind after uninstalling does not prove that the installation is still healthy. Check whether startup entries, browser integration, or Explorer extensions still reference it.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a genuine application file, especially after an update or when the installation has been modified.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving IDM or
idmnetmon64.dll. - Expand the detection and inspect the original file location.
A file located in the genuine IDM installation directory is more credible than one found in a temporary folder, a system directory, or an unrelated application folder. Before restoring anything, verify that the IDM installation came from Tonec and that the file has a valid Tonec digital signature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not blindly choose Allow on device or create a permanent antivirus exclusion. Microsoft warns that allowing a real threat can expose the computer. If Defender detected an unofficial IDM build, remove that installation and reinstall IDM from Tonec instead.
After resolving the detection, run the official IDM installer again. Reinstalling the complete application is safer than restoring an isolated DLL.

Fix 3: Check the file location and digital signature
If the error continues, inspect the file rather than replacing it from the internet.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the IDM installation directory, commonly:
text
C:Program Files (x86)Internet Download Manager - Look for
idmnetmon64.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
A genuine file should normally be associated with the trusted IDM publisher. A copy found in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a temporary download folder, or another program’s directory deserves investigation.

Fix 4: Test IDM browser and Explorer integration
Public Microsoft Q&A reports have identified IDMNetMon64.DLL as a faulting module in some explorer.exe crashes, including access-violation reports. That establishes an association, not proof that every Explorer crash is caused by this DLL.
Use this branch when File Explorer crashes, browser downloads fail, or the error began after an IDM, Windows, or browser update.
- Update or reinstall IDM using the official installer.
- Open the browser’s extension settings.
- Temporarily disable the official IDM integration extension.
- Restart the browser and test downloads.
- Restart Windows and test File Explorer.
If Explorer becomes stable when IDM integration is disabled, leave the integration disabled until a newer compatible IDM build is available. If you do not need IDM, uninstall it temporarily and test Explorer again.

The remaining cause may be another shell extension, a graphics driver, or injected third-party software.
Fix 5: Update a driver only when crash evidence points there
A graphics or shell-extension conflict can resemble an IDM problem, but reinstalling drivers is not the first repair for a simple missing IDM file.
Use Windows Update first:
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
For a specific device:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Network adapters.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Only pursue a graphics-driver rollback or reinstall when Event Viewer, Reliability Monitor, or the crash pattern points to that driver. Do not use Device Manager to search for idmnetmon64.dll; it is an IDM application module, not a hardware driver.
If manually checking every device and repeating updates is becoming guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; the scan identifies the issue, while driver installation requires the full version. Reinstalling IDM remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to IDM.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore an IDM-owned DLL, so use them when Windows has additional symptoms such as damaged system apps, update failures, or repeated unrelated crashes.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM supplies the repair source for corrupted Windows components. If SFC reports no violations, that does not prove that IDM is intact. Run the IDM installer afterward if idmnetmon64.dll is still missing.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing whether Windows components are actually damaged rarely repairs an application installation. If you want a guided scan rather than manually interpreting repair output, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan finds; the scan is available before repair, while automated repair requires the full version. For this file, reinstalling IDM remains the definitive fix.
Fix 7: Use System Restore only after application repair fails
System Restore is appropriate when the problem clearly began after a recent software installation, update, or system change and the IDM repair path did not help.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
text
rstrui.exe - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Follow the wizard and restart Windows.
System Restore does not replace a missing IDM installation with a guaranteed correct file. It rolls back selected system and application changes, so use it only when the timing is clear. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains what the process changes and what it does not affect.

What not to do
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders contain Windows components and compatibility files. idmnetmon64.dll belongs with IDM. Copying it into a protected system folder can create path confusion and architecture conflicts.
Do not register it with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified Tonec instruction requiring users to register idmnetmon64.dll.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not run:
regsvr32 idmnetmon64.dll
A “module failed to load” message from regsvr32 does not repair IDM and can distract from the actual installation problem.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET at random
Those runtimes are relevant only when the error names a Microsoft runtime DLL or the IDM installer specifically reports a dependency problem. Installing multiple runtimes indiscriminately will not normally restore an IDM module.
Frequently asked questions
Is idmnetmon64.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Internet Download Manager and is not a normal Windows system DLL.
Is the file safe?
A copy inside a genuine IDM installation with a valid publisher signature is more trustworthy. A copy in a random folder, temporary directory, or Windows system folder should be scanned and investigated.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I download only idmnetmon64.dll?
Do not use random DLL download sites. The safe source is the official Tonec IDM installer, which supplies the file together with compatible application components.
What does “specified module could not be found” mean?
It can mean that idmnetmon64.dll is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency needed by the module is missing or incompatible. Reinstalling the complete IDM package is safer than replacing one file.
Will SFC fix this error?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while idmnet64.dll belongs to IDM. Use SFC and DISM only for broader Windows corruption symptoms.
What if the error returns after reinstalling IDM?
Check Protection History, confirm that the file is in the IDM directory, and inspect its digital signature. Then disable IDM browser integration and test Explorer. If crashes remain after uninstalling IDM, identify the current faulting module in Event Viewer rather than continuing to replace IDM files.
