This is a genuine Microsoft component named IE ETW Collector Service Resources. It belongs to Internet Explorer 11 and is delivered through Windows and Internet Explorer servicing, even though Internet Explorer’s desktop browser is retired on many Windows versions. The correct repair path is Windows Update followed by DISM and System File Checker.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list to jump to the most likely solution:
- The error appeared after an update, crash, cleanup, or failed repair: install Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC.
- The file disappeared immediately after an antivirus scan: inspect quarantine and confirm the file’s signature and location before restoring anything.
- The error began after changing drivers or system software: use System Restore, then repair Windows.
- The file exists but an application still fails: repair Windows, check dependencies, and investigate the named application or its Event Viewer entry.
- The file is outside a Windows system directory: treat it as suspicious and scan the computer.
- DISM and SFC cannot repair the image: use a matching Windows installation source or perform an in-place repair installation.
- A game launcher shows the message: repair Windows first. Use the launcher’s verify function only for files belonging to that game.
What is ieetwcollectorres.dll
Microsoft identifies the component as IE ETW Collector Service Resources, associated with Internet Explorer 11. It is a resource DLL used by the Internet Explorer ETW Collector service. Microsoft update manifests list it alongside related Internet Explorer files such as ieetwcollector.exe and ieetwproxystub.dll.
The individual resources inside the file are not described in detail in Microsoft’s public user documentation. In practical terms, however, its provenance is clear: this is a Windows and Internet Explorer component, not a standalone runtime that you install separately.

It is not part of:
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
- DirectX End-User Runtime
- .NET
- Microsoft Edge as a separately downloaded component
- Game middleware
- A normal third-party application
Its presence also does not mean that you actively use Internet Explorer. Older Windows components can remain installed for compatibility and servicing purposes.
Microsoft’s update manifests show the file at 4,096 bytes in multiple releases. Versions can look like 11.0.9600.16384, 11.0.9600.16518, or later 11.0.9600.xxxxx builds. That numbering is normal for an Internet Explorer system component. The exact version depends on the Windows edition, architecture, servicing baseline, and installed cumulative updates.
What the error actually means
You may see wording such as:
This application failed to start because ieetwcollectorres.dll was not found.
The program can't start because ieetwcollectorres.dll is missing from your computer.
Error loading ieetwcollectorres.dll. The specified module could not be found.
ieetwcollectorres.dll could not be loaded.
ieetwcollectorres.dll is corrupted.
These are commonly reported forms rather than a Microsoft-defined error catalog.
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that ieetwcollectorres.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency, manifest, catalog, or related system component required by the loading process.

Likely triggers include:
- An interrupted or incomplete Windows update
- Damage to the Windows component store
- Deleted or quarantined system files
- Disk or file-system corruption
- A failed system cleanup or repair operation
- A legacy application probing for the file incorrectly
Fix 1: Install Windows updates
Because this DLL is supplied through Windows and Internet Explorer servicing, Windows Update is the safest first repair.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every applicable update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Check for updates again after the restart.
If Windows Update reports an error:
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update.
- Select Run.
- Follow the repair suggestions.
- Restart and check for updates again.
Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter covers this process.
On Windows 10, note that normal support ended on October 14, 2025 unless the device has applicable extended-support coverage. An obsolete or unavailable update channel can prevent Windows from restoring the correct component.
If the application starts normally after updating, the missing component was likely restored. If the error remains, continue with the servicing repair below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to check and replace protected system files. Run them in this order.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause while the component store is being repaired.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try the affected application again.
A successful SFC run may report that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found and repaired corrupted files. Either result is useful. If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart and run SFC again after DISM has completed.
Microsoft documents this approach in Repair a Windows image.

Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the issues involved and show what needs attention, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update plus Microsoft’s built-in commands remain the correct path for this Microsoft component.
If DISM cannot repair the image, Microsoft’s documentation covers using a matching Windows installation source. Do not substitute an arbitrary DLL from another computer or Windows build.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
If the error began immediately after a security scan, the file may have been quarantined.
- Open your antivirus or Windows Security application.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or Detection history.
- Search for
ieetwcollectorres.dll. - Check the reported path, detection name, and signature information.
- Do not restore it solely because the filename looks familiar.
- Restore it only when it is identified as a Microsoft-signed Windows component and the computer is otherwise clean.
- Update Windows after restoration.
- Run a full security scan.
If the file was found outside a Windows system directory, leave it quarantined and scan the system. Malware can use a familiar filename. A Microsoft-like name is not proof of authenticity.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to make the error disappear.

Fix 4: Verify the file and architecture
On 64-bit Windows, native 64-bit system files are handled through System32, while 32-bit files used under WOW64 are handled through SysWOW64 redirection. The correct copy and path depend on the Windows edition and the application requesting it.
Do not copy an x86 file over a native x64 file, or the reverse.
To inspect a suspected copy:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the path reported by the error or application.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Check that the signer is Microsoft Corporation.
- Open Details and compare the file description with IE ETW Collector Service Resources.
- Note the full path and version, but do not treat a third-party website’s version or hash as authoritative.
If the file is present and signed but the error continues, the problem may be a missing dependency, damaged servicing catalog, incompatible application, or incorrect search path. The error text alone cannot identify which one.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a system change
System Restore is useful when the failure began after a driver installation, cleanup utility, update, or registry/system modification.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove recently installed drivers or applications. After Windows starts, run Windows Update and then the DISM/SFC sequence again if necessary.
Fix 6: Check the disk if corruption is suspected
A failing or corrupted file system can cause Windows files to disappear or become unreadable.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
chkdsk /f C:
If Windows says the volume is in use, allow the check to run at the next restart, then restart the computer. If the issue returns, back up important files and investigate the drive’s health before performing repeated repairs.

Fix 7: Repair the application that reports the error
If only one old application fails while Windows itself appears healthy, the application may be incorrectly probing for a system component or may have its own damaged files.
- Record the executable name shown in the error.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s settings.
- Otherwise uninstall and reinstall it from its official installer.
For a game, open its launcher and use Verify, Scan and repair, or the equivalent function. That process is for the game’s files. It should not replace a Windows system DLL.
If the application requires a separate runtime, install that runtime only when the application reports that runtime’s own missing file. Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET packages are not appropriate substitutes for ieetwcollectorres.dll.
Drivers and Device Manager
A driver is not the normal owner of this DLL, so updating drivers should not be your first move. Consider it only if the problem started directly after a graphics, chipset, storage, or other device change.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant hardware category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
For a recently installed driver, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if the option is available.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the relevant update, while installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace Windows servicing for this DLL.
Do not register or download the DLL
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 ieetwcollectorres.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a self-registration entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components. Microsoft documents this file as an Internet Explorer resource DLL, not as a COM server. Registering it may simply produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found.
Avoid random DLL download sites as well. A manually downloaded file can contain malware, match the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail to fix the missing dependency that caused the error. The safe sources are Windows Update, Microsoft repair tools, matching Microsoft installation media, or an official in-place Windows repair.
FAQ
Is ieetwcollectorres.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A copy with the wrong path, missing Microsoft signature, or unexpected behavior should be scanned rather than trusted by filename alone.
Should I reinstall Internet Explorer?
Usually no. Repair Windows through Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. Internet Explorer 11’s desktop application is retired on many versions of Windows, but related components can remain relevant to servicing and legacy compatibility. Microsoft recommends Edge IE mode for supported legacy web applications. See Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 11 lifecycle.
Why is a 4-KB file versioned like 11.0.9600.xxxxx?
It is a resource file shipped as part of the Internet Explorer servicing baseline. Its version identifies the Windows and Internet Explorer build that supplied it, not the file’s size or importance.
Where should the file be located?
It should be handled in the Windows system directories appropriate to the installed architecture. On 64-bit Windows, System32 and SysWOW64 serve different roles. Verify the actual path on the affected system instead of copying a file into either directory.
What if SFC and DISM finish but the error remains?
Record the complete error, the failing executable, Windows version and build, the DLL’s full path, and relevant Event Viewer details. The named DLL may be incidental, while a dependency or application compatibility problem is the real cause. If repair still fails, use a matching installation source or an in-place repair installation.
