Before changing Windows, identify the program that displays the pgort100.dll error.
- Which program or game fails: the filename alone cannot identify the application.
- When did it start: after an update, interrupted reinstall, cleanup utility, antivirus action, or sudden shutdown?
- Does only one program fail: if so, repair that program before repairing Windows.
- Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit: the runtime architecture must match the failing executable.
- Does the message say “specified module could not be found”:
pgort100.dllmay exist while another dependency is missing.
The fastest safe solution is usually to repair or reinstall the affected application from its official installer. Do not begin by downloading pgort100.dll and copying it into a Windows system folder.
What pgort100.dll is
pgort100.dll is the Visual Studio 2010-era Profile-Guided Optimization Instrumentation Runtime. Profile-Guided Optimization, or PGO, collects execution data so a native application can be optimized for the code paths it uses most. Microsoft documents that an instrumented executable links against pgort.lib and requires a versioned runtime named pgortXXX.dll; the Visual Studio 2010 runtime is pgort100.dll.Microsoft’s PGO documentation
The 100 refers to the Visual Studio 2010 compiler generation. It does not mean that the file is a standard Windows component.

pgort100.dll normally belongs beside the application that needs it, or in the relevant Visual Studio toolchain directory when a developer is building an instrumented program. It is not a reason to search for a replacement in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
The file can be 32-bit or 64-bit. A 32-bit application needs the matching 32-bit runtime, while a 64-bit application needs the 64-bit runtime. The fact that Windows itself is 64-bit does not mean every installed program is 64-bit.
What the error means
Windows may show messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because pgort100.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting pgort100.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because pgort100.dll was not found.”
- “pgort100.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are Windows loader symptoms, not proof that the file should be registered or copied globally. Common causes include:

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected program
This is the most likely fix when one application refuses to start.
Try the application’s repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the program on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if it is available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If the application has its own launcher, open that launcher instead and look for Repair, Verify, Scan and Repair, or Check files. These options restore files from the program’s own trusted installation source.

If Repair is unavailable or does not work:
- Close the program and its launcher.
- Download the current installer from the application developer’s official website.
- Open Settings, Apps, and Installed apps.
- Uninstall the affected program.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer as an administrator. Right-click it, select Show more options if necessary, and choose Run as administrator.
- Start the program and test it.
For an older application, use the installer intended for that application rather than assuming a modern runtime package will replace every private DLL.
Firefox as a documented example
Firefox has historically produced a pgort100.dll missing message alongside an “Couldn’t load XPCOM” error. Mozilla’s troubleshooting guidance resolves this type of installation failure by removing the Firefox program files and reinstalling Firefox while keeping the separate user profile. Back up important profile data first, then use the current official Firefox installer rather than copying a DLL from another machine.
If reinstalling does not help, check the error again for the executable path. You may be starting a second installation, a portable copy, or an outdated launcher.

Security software can remove or quarantine a program file after an update or scan. Restore a file only after confirming that the application itself came from a trustworthy source.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open an entry associated with the affected program.
- Confirm the file path and detection details.
- If the application is trusted and the detection is clearly incorrect, use the available Restore or Allow on device action.
- If you are uncertain, do not restore the file. Uninstall the application and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
If Defender repeatedly quarantines the same file, do not keep restoring it blindly. Run a full scan, investigate the detection, and obtain a digitally signed replacement through the application vendor.

Fix 3: Install the matching Visual C++ 2010 package
Some older programs require Visual C++ 2010 components. Microsoft lists Visual C++ 2010 SP1 separately from the current Visual C++ v14 redistributable, and Visual C++ 2010 is no longer supported.
Microsoft provides these legacy SP1 packages:
vcredist_x86.exe, version10.0.40219.325, for 32-bit applicationsvcredist_x64.exe, version10.0.40219.325, for 64-bit applications
Use Microsoft’s current Visual C++ Redistributable download table to obtain the official package. Microsoft also provides a Visual C++ 2010 SP1 MFC Security Update.
To install it:
- Identify whether the failing application is 32-bit or 64-bit. The application’s documentation, installer name, or vendor support page may state this.
- Download the matching Microsoft installer.
- Right-click the downloaded file and select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms and complete setup.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected application.
Do not assume this package will restore an application-private copy of pgort100.dll. The application may require a specific runtime beside its executable, so repairing or reinstalling the program remains the definitive fix when the error concerns one application.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when other programs are also failing
pgort100.dll is not a standard Windows component, so DISM and SFC are not guaranteed to restore it. They are appropriate when several unrelated applications are failing, Windows files are damaged, or updates and system services are also behaving abnormally.
First install pending updates:
- Press Windows + I.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then run DISM and SFC in that order:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
Microsoft explains this DISM and SFC repair sequence. If the scan reports repairs but the application still fails, return to the application’s installer rather than repeatedly running SFC.

A graphics or device driver is not a normal source of a missing PGO runtime error. Driver updates are relevant if multiple programs crash, Device Manager reports a device problem, or the error began with broader display, audio, or hardware failures.
Check Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the suspected device.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also install drivers through Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates. Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official driver when Windows does not find one.
Manually hunting through dozens of driver packages can make it difficult to tell which change affected the problem. A driver update is not a substitute for reinstalling the program that actually needs pgort100.dll.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 pgort100.dll
Runtime DLLs are normally loaded by an executable. They are not usually COM or ActiveX components that need registration. regsvr32 works only when a DLL provides registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, as Microsoft explains in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.
Registration will not repair a missing dependency, correct a wrong architecture, or restore an incomplete application installation.

Downloading an isolated pgort100.dll from a random DLL website is unsafe and often ineffective. The file may contain malware, belong to a different compiler build, have the wrong architecture, or hide the fact that another dependency is missing.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64 by default. That can create version conflicts and DLL search-order problems. The correct location is normally the application directory, restored by the application’s official installer.
The safe sources are:
- The affected application’s official installer or repair feature
- Microsoft’s official Visual C++ 2010 SP1 packages when the legacy runtime is genuinely required
- A developer’s signed deployment of the exact runtime matching its instrumented executable
If the error still remains
Check these details before escalating:
- Record the exact program name and executable path.
- Confirm whether the program is installed more than once.
- Check whether the error began after an update, cleanup, reinstall, or antivirus action.
- Confirm the application and runtime architecture match.
- Look for the file in the application directory, not only in Windows system folders.
- If the message says “specified module could not be found,” investigate dependent DLLs rather than replacing only
pgort100.dll. - Ask the application vendor for a supported dependency-analysis procedure.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan if the file disappeared unexpectedly.
- Use System Restore only as a fallback after a recent system change. Open Start, type
rstrui.exe, and follow the restore-point wizard, remembering that installed programs and system settings may be rolled back. Microsoft documents this System Restore process.
FAQ
Is pgort100.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is a Visual Studio 2010 PGO runtime used by applications built with that tooling. It should not normally be installed by copying it into System32.

Why does the file exist but Windows still say it is missing?
The executable may be unable to load one of pgort100.dll’s dependencies, or the file may be incompatible with the application’s architecture or compiler generation.
Can a developer ship pgort100.dll manually?
Yes, but the developer must deploy the exact matching runtime beside the instrumented executable under Microsoft’s redistribution requirements. Consumers should obtain it through the application’s signed installer rather than assembling a DLL installation by hand.
