The right fix depends on what “crashing” means. If Black Ops 6 closes to the desktop, follow the launch, driver, file-repair, and background-software checks. If it stops responding, treat it as a freeze. If the screen goes black only inside the game, investigate the game’s display mode, overlays, and graphics driver. If the entire Windows display goes black or flickers, use Windows display-recovery steps instead of treating the problem as only a Call of Duty issue.
Work through the checks below in order. They are based on Activision’s PC troubleshooting guidance and known-issues information, but none is guaranteed to fix every crash: the cause can be a damaged game file, shader compilation, an incompatible driver or overlay, security software, Windows, unstable tuning, or failing hardware.

First, identify when Black Ops 6 fails
Before changing settings, note the exact failure point:

- During shader preloading: let the process finish after a driver or game-file change; interrupting it can cause severe stutter or later crashes.
- When entering a mode or map: repair the installation and disable overlays, capture software, and hardware-tuning utilities.
- After a match: test without background applications and check whether the issue occurs consistently or only in a particular mode.
- Only when an overlay or recording feature is active: disable that feature first rather than reinstalling the game.
Also identify your storefront: Steam, Battle.net, or the Xbox app for Windows. Each has a different file-repair command.

1. Check whether your PC meets the published requirements
Activision’s published requirements are launch-era requirements, so later patches may require additional update space. They are a useful first check, not a guarantee of stability.

If you already have an SSD and enough free space, buying storage will not fix a driver or overlay conflict. If your PC has no suitable SSD or cannot maintain the required free space, a PC SSD with enough free space is a conditional hardware upgrade—not a standard crash remedy.
2. Update Windows and establish a known GPU-driver baseline
Install the latest available Windows updates first. Activision specifically says that the latest Windows 11 version substantially improves NVIDIA stability. Restart after updating, even if Windows does not appear to require it.

- NVIDIA: 566.03
- AMD: 25.5.1
- Intel: 32.0.101.6790
These are troubleshooting baselines, not a claim that they are the newest drivers available. Download drivers only from the GPU manufacturer’s official support channel. If a newer driver is the change that immediately preceded the crashes, Activision says to test rolling back to its recommended baseline.
NVIDIA identifies 566.03 as a WHQL Windows 10/11 driver released on October 22, 2024, with Black Ops 6 among its supported games. Intel’s release notes for 32.0.101.6790 also document a known Black Ops 6 DirectX 12 flickering or corruption issue on Intel Arc B-Series graphics. Therefore, installing the Intel baseline is not a guarantee that every Intel scene-corruption problem will disappear.
When installing a driver, use the vendor’s normal clean-install option if available and restart afterward. Do not install several driver versions at once or use an unofficial “driver fixer” as the first step.

3. Let shader preloading complete
Shader preloading is an important part of Black Ops 6’s first boot and can run again after a driver update or changes to game files. Leave the game at the main menu until preloading finishes. Do not enter a mode, close the game, or repeatedly navigate away from the menu while it is still working.
If the first launch appears stuck, give shader preloading time before assuming that the installation has failed. If it crashes repeatedly after a driver change, repair the files as described below, return to the recommended driver baseline, and allow the next preload to finish uninterrupted.
4. Repair Black Ops 6 through its launcher
Damaged, incomplete, or quarantined files can produce launch crashes, freezes, and failures when a mode or map loads. Use the repair function for the storefront where the game is installed.

Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Black Ops 6 and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Steam notes that some files may fail verification because they are local configuration files. That does not automatically mean the repair failed. Let Steam finish replacing or reacquiring files, then restart the computer and allow shader preloading to complete.
Battle.net
- Open the Battle.net client.
- Select Black Ops 6.
- Open the options menu beside the Play button.
- Choose Scan and Repair, then start the scan.
Xbox app for Windows
- Open the Xbox app.
- Find Black Ops 6 and select the three-dot menu next to Play.
- Choose Manage, then Files.
- Select Verify and Repair.
Repair before reinstalling. A reinstall consumes considerable time and bandwidth and will not solve a problem caused by a display driver, overlay, unstable overclock, or Windows-level failure.
If Windows stability problems remain after the official checks, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional tool for Windows repair and cleanup; it is not required and does not replace Activision or vendor support.
5. Disable software that can conflict with the game
Activision warns that third-party software can interfere even when it is not visibly being used. For a clean test, close or temporarily disable:
- Discord, Steam, Battle.net, or other in-game overlays
- Recording and streaming tools
- Input-remapping software
- RGB and peripheral-control utilities
- GPU, CPU, fan, and frame-rate monitoring overlays
- Overclocking and tuning utilities
Restart Windows after closing software that runs background services, then launch Black Ops 6 with only the game launcher and essential Windows components active. If the crash disappears, re-enable applications one at a time until the conflict returns. That identifies the likely cause more reliably than leaving every program disabled permanently.
Update device-control and peripheral drivers where appropriate. Activision also recommends a Windows clean boot as a diagnostic measure. A clean boot is not a permanent requirement for playing the game: use it to determine whether a startup service or background application is responsible, then restore normal startup and remove or update the conflicting software.
Disable overclocking, undervolting, GPU tuning, and aggressive memory profiles while testing. A setting that is stable in another game can still fail under Black Ops 6’s workload. Activision also advises re-enabling ASLR if it has been disabled. Do not disable Windows security features to chase a crash; restore security settings to their normal state and test supported configurations.
6. Check antivirus quarantine and exclusions carefully
Security software can block, quarantine, or modify a game file. First check the antivirus history or quarantine and restore only files that you have confirmed belong to the genuine installation. Then repair the installation through Steam, Battle.net, or the Xbox app.
Activision recommends adding the entire Black Ops 6 game folder to the antivirus exception list when antivirus interference is suspected. Treat this as a targeted diagnostic test:
- Confirm that the game came from the official storefront.
- Record the current exception so you can remove it later.
- Add only the genuine game folder, not the entire drive or Windows directory.
- Repair the files and test the game.
- Remove or narrow the exception if it makes no difference.
Never download a replacement DLL from an unofficial DLL website. A file that appears to fix launch errors can be malicious, incompatible, or both.

7. Special case: Xbox app reports missing discord_game_sdk.dll
Activision’s Known Issues tracker has listed a PC launch problem involving the Xbox app and a missing discord_game_sdk.dll. If this is the exact error you see, use the official workaround linked from Activision’s Known Issues page, or repair/reinstall the affected software as Activision directs.
Do not search for that DLL on a third-party download site. The correct file and workaround depend on the affected installation, and an unofficial copy is not a safe substitute. The Known Issues page is a running tracker; its listed issues and workarounds can change. It also records that crashes affecting AMD Radeon RX 400 and RX 500 graphics cards were addressed. That is a resolved historical issue, not evidence that every current AMD crash has been fixed.

If Windows remains usable and the blank display occurs only after Black Ops 6 starts, begin with the graphics-driver reset:
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B.
- Wait for the display to refresh. You may hear a brief sound or see the screen flicker.
- Press Alt + Tab to see whether another window appears.
- Close overlays and recording tools before relaunching.
Once the game opens again, test borderless-windowed or windowed mode instead of exclusive fullscreen. If that works, gradually retest fullscreen after changing one setting at a time.
On Windows 11, test the game’s per-application graphics settings. Microsoft documents options to disable Auto HDR or windowed-game optimizations for an individual game when those features contribute to display problems. Do not change every Windows graphics setting simultaneously: you need to know which change affects the symptom.

A black screen outside Black Ops 6 points to a broader display, driver, cable, power, or hardware problem. Use Microsoft’s blank-screen procedure instead of repeatedly reinstalling the game.
Use Task Manager to separate an app problem from a driver problem
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Watch whether Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the display:
- Task Manager flickers too: a display-driver problem is more likely.
- Task Manager stays stable while another application flickers: an incompatible application is more likely.
If the display remains blank, check that the monitor is powered on, reconnect the video cable, and try another port if available. Press Windows + P to cycle display modes. Safe Mode may be necessary if Windows cannot load normally.
A new HDMI or DisplayPort cable is relevant only when the whole-system symptoms suggest a connection or monitor problem. It is not a proven fix for a black screen that occurs exclusively inside Black Ops 6.

11. Record evidence before escalating
If the problem persists, write down:
- GPU model and current driver version
- Windows version and whether it is fully updated
- Steam, Battle.net, or Xbox app installation
- Exactly when the crash, freeze, or black screen occurs
- Any error text or missing-file message
- Whether file repair completed successfully
- Whether shader preloading was allowed to finish
- Which overlays, capture tools, antivirus exclusions, and tuning utilities were disabled
Submit Activision’s PC Crash Report for persistent crashes and use its Bug Report form for an issue that is not listed in Known Issues. Include the evidence above so the report is useful.
If the display remains black outside the game, or the PC reboots, artifacts, overheats, loses power, or fails in other demanding applications, the cause may be a GPU, power supply, thermal, RAM, display, or broader driver problem. At that point, contact the PC or graphics-card manufacturer rather than assuming another game reinstall will help.
Before you buy anything
Existing owners should not repurchase the game as a troubleshooting step. If you are identifying the correct edition or do not own it yet, the Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 PC edition is the relevant product context for these requirements. For current owners, start with Windows, drivers, shader preloading, file repair, and conflict isolation.
Likewise, do not buy a new GPU or gaming PC simply because the game crashes. Compare your hardware with the published requirements first. Hardware becomes a reasonable consideration only when the system is below those requirements or shows symptoms outside Black Ops 6.
